二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、School uniforms(校服) are traditional in Britain. Pupils at about 90 percent of British secondary schools wear uniforms. When every pupil in the school wears the uniform, nobody has to worry about fashion and they feel that they belong to a group. Some people believe that a school uniform can help students pay attention to schoolwork. But some schools in Britain and other countries are starting to drop the traditional uniforms.

An Australian school has decided to drop its traditional school uniform, hoping new sportswear will encourage students to take part in more activities. School headmaster Elisabeth Lenders said the uniform change had been in the works for several years. "We decided that in 2018-2019, " she said. "The importance is clear: to make young people live happy, healthy lives."

Ms Lenders said World Health Organization research reported 90 percent of young Australians and New Zealanders were not getting the minimum(最小的)daily levels of activity they needed in order to lead a healthy life. As well as the new uniform, she said the school would change timetables to make sure there would be chances for students to take part in physical activity every day.

Ms Lenders said in the past, a uniform was about all looking the same but in the 21st century it was important for students to be able to choose clothes that they liked.

And this Australian school had made an online survey about the uniform change and had received great support from parents and students. Tara, mother of Ava in Year 7, said it was a great move from the school. "These are the challenges of our time, and we want young people to think about them, " she said. "It is bigger than just throwing out the old uniform. It's about what the role of education is about. And for me it's helping young people to live a happy, healthy and productive life. "

【1】What does the underline word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.physical activity.

    C.happy life.

    D.students' health.

A.helps students to live a healthy life

B.gives students a sense of belonging

    C.teaches students to dress fashionably

D.helps students to pay attention to study

【3】What can we know from the last paragraph?

A.Students there may wear different kinds of clothes.

B.It's not clear whether the change is good for students or not.

C.Parents have different opinions towards the change of uniform.

D.The change receives strong support from students and parents.

  • 22、It’s no secret that the senior years in high school are the best of the four. Finally, you’re at the top of the tower and all the lower grades look up to you. They are your last years of compulsory education, and afterwards you’re free to do with your life as you please.

By senior years, you’ve probably already found your ideal set of friends and have made many new ones. Now that you have the traditionally tough junior years out of the way, be happy in your senior years! Basically, make the most of high school, because it will affect your future career and life. I can’t stress this enough. After these years are over, this whole part of your school life is over, and you won’t get it back. High school is awesome because of the balance between responsibilities and freedoms.

If you did well in your junior years, you just need to keep it up. So in your senior years, take classes that are made up of what you’ve been taking. If you’ve been taking a lot of college preparation classes, keep it up and take some of your senior classes too. Don’t just drop down to a bunch of PE and art classes—this looks terrible.

Everyone has friends. You know the people you talk to in class and probably get along with them quite well, but you never really hang out with them outside the classroom. Try to build stronger friendships with them if you can. Getting people together from your class to see a movie or something is great fun and not nearly as difficult as you would think.

【1】What can be the best title for the passage?

    A.Happy Life in High School

B.What We Learn in High School

C.The Relationship Between High School and College

D.The Importance of Senior Years in High School

【2】Why does the author think high school is awesome?

A.Because the teachers are so strict.

B.Because the students are hard to get along with.

C.Because the students must balance their responsibilities and freedoms.

D.Because the students have a lot of work to do.

【3】In senior years, students had better not spend a lot of time learning ________.

A.the lessons they did well in junior years

B.classes that are made up of what they have been taking

    C.college preparation classes

    D.PE and art classes

【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Students should not get too close to each other.

B.Students should develop friendships with classmates.

    C.Students should go outside class.

D.Students should stay in the classroom.

  • 23、   Poaching (偷猎) and habitat loss have threatened Africa's two species of elephants, taking them closer toward the edge of extinction, according to a new report released by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Before this update, Africa 's elephants were grouped together and were evaluated as vulnerable (脆弱的) by the IUCN. This is the first time the two species have been classified separately. In the past, elephants were mostly considered as either Asian elephants or African elephants. Forest and savanna elephants were typically classified as subspecies of African elephants.

The African forest elephant is now listed as critically endangered and the African savanna elephant as endangered. The number of African forest elephants fell by more than 86% over a 31-year assessment period. The population of African savanna elephants dropped by at least 60% over the last 50 years, according to the IUCN, which tracks the assessment risk of the world's animals. Africa currently has an estimated 415,000 elephants, counting the two species together.

Both elephant species experienced significant population decreases because of poaching. Although it peaked in 2011, illegal hunting still happens and continues to threaten elephant populations. African elephants also face continued habitat loss as their land is converted for agriculture or other uses.

There is some good conservation news, the IUCN points out. Anti-poaching measures, combined with better land use planning to support better human-wildlife relationships, have helped conservation efforts. Some forest elephant population figures have stabilized in well-managed are as in Gabon and the Republic of Congo and savanna population figures have remained stable or have been growing, particularly in the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area in southern Africa.

But with persistent demand for ivory and increasing human pressures on Africa's wild lands, concern for Africa's elephants is high, and the need to creatively conserve and wisely manage these animals and their habitats is severer than ever.

【1】Which of the following can describe African forest elephants?

    A.Their situation is even worse.

B.They are divided into two kinds.

C.They're under threat due to poaching only.

D.Their population has grown in Gabon.

【2】What does the underlined word “converted” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.Expanded.

    B.Accumulated.

    C.Transformed.

    D.Classified.

【3】What's the author's attitude to the present situation of African elephants?

    A.Uninterested.

    B.Optimistic.

    C.Uncertain.

    D.Worried.

【4】What's the main idea of the text?

A.Poaching and habitat loss will make elephants extinct.

B.Both of Africa's elephant species are now endangered.

C.More and more African elephants are being illegally hunted.

D.More measures should be taken to protect African elephants.

  • 24、   For a good night's sleep, here is some expert advice Turn off, turn in and drop off. Anyone who does the opposite—turning on an iPad or other similar electronic readers in bed— may have a harder time both dropping off to sleep and shaking that weak feeling the next morning, a new study found.

Sleep experts at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, found that the light from a tablet computer upsets the body's internal(体内的)clock while reading a printed book does not have the same effect.

An internal clock helps regulate when we sleep. Exposure to the light of day and darkness of night keeps its timing set to a roughly 24-hour cycle. Starting about two hours before bedtime, our brains start to produce a hormone called melatonin(褪黑激素),which signals our internal clock that darkness has fallen and prepares the body for sleep.

Scientists have known for long that light at night can mess with that internal clock. And it does so by suppressing(抑制)melatonin, thus preventing the body from getting the message that bedtime is near.

For their new study, the researchers recruited(招募)six men and six women, all in their mid-20s. Over two weeks, each spent four hours reading each evening before a 10: 00 pm bedtime. The volunteers read on an iPad for five nights in a row. On another five evenings they read a printed book.

Participants took nearly 10 minutes longer to fall asleep, on average, after reading on the iPads. They also spent less time in rapid-eye movement sleep which appears important for learning and storing memories.

There was no difference in hours spent sleeping after reading from either the iPad or a printed book. But how volunteers felt the next day did differ.

“Our most surprising finding is that participants using the e-reader would be more tired and take longer to become alert(警觉的)the next morning, says sleep researcher Ann-Marie Chang.

1What is paragraph 3 intended to stress?

A.The significance of the internal clock for sleep.

B.The relationship between internal clock and time.

C.The necessity of going to bed earlier regularly.

D.The importance of melatonin for new lifestyles.

2What does the underlined word “it" in paragraph 4 refer to?

A.The sleep disorder. B.The delayed message.

C.Light at night. D.An internal clock.

3How did the researchers try to show the results of the study?

A.By making comparisons. B.By giving some examples.

C.By explaining the principles. D.By telling causes and effects.

4What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.An Internal Clock Has Control Over Sleep

B.Electronic Readers Should Be Formally Avoided

C.Reading Before the Night Sleep Leads to Health Problems

D.Screen Time Before Bedtime Can Disturb the Body's Clock
