21、In addition to seeing wonderful films, one of the joys of coming to the Quad Cinema is to hang out in the area. The Quad is located right in the heart of Greenwich Village, perhaps the most charming and interesting neighborhood in the city. Here are some attractions we recommend, all within a comfortable walk from the Quad:
Washington Square
As one of the best-known of New York City’s 1,900 public parks, it is a landmark in the Manhattan neighborhood of Greenwich Village, as well as a meeting place and center for cultural activity. Come on a Sunday when it’s most lively and festive.
New York University
It surrounds Washington Square. See the impressive Bobst Library and visit the amazing bookstore. NYU is now considered one of the most powerful universities in the world.
Judson Memorial Church
Located on Washington Square south between Thompson Street and Sullivan Street, opposite Washington Square Park, this beautiful church was completed in 1892. The Judson is most famous for its vocal participation in social events.
Washington Mews
It is a hidden, private street in New York City between Fifth Avenue and University Place just north of Washington Square Park. It was first developed as a mews (row of stables) that serviced horses from homes in the area. Since the 1950s the former stables have served as housing, offices and other facilities for New York University.
Jefferson Market Courthouse
Built in 1833 as a market, it was later changed to a courthouse, and in the 1950s it was emptied and close to being destroyed. It was saved and turned into a library. Many consider it to be the most beautiful building in the village.

22、Some cities and lawmakers are resisting crime-fighting tech owing to bias (偏见) and accuracy concerns. Police departments around the U.S. are asking citizens to trust them to use facial recognition software as a handy tool in their crime-fighting toolbox. But some lawmakers — and even some technology giants — are against it.
Take the western Massachusetts city of Springfield, where many residents are Latino or black. Springfield police say they have no plans to use facial recognition systems, but some City Council members are moving to block any future government use of the technology anyway.
At an October hearing on the subject, Springfield City Councilman, Orlando Ramos, defended the technology. “The facial recognition technology does not drop a net from the sky and put you to prison,” he said, noting that it could serve as a useful investigative tool. However, he doesn’t want to take any risks. “It would only lead to more racial discrimination.” he said, citing studies that found higher error rates for facial recognition software used to identify women and people with darker skins.
Similar debates across the country are highlighting racial issues and concerns about the technology’s accuracy. Axon, which supplies body-worn cameras nationwide, had already formed an artificial intelligence ethics board (伦理委员会)that concluded facial recognition technology isn’t yet dependable enough to justify its use on police cameras. Axon Chief Executive Rick Smith said, “Even if facial recognition software was perfectly accurate, the ability to track people raises privacy concerns. “Do we want everybody who walks near a police officer to get their face identified and logged in a database?” he said.
Nevertheless, Todd Pastorini, general manager at biometric forensics (生物取证) company DataWorks Plus, said it’s the “extremely effective” method of running images through photos to help identify a suspect. “Society and the public are going to get frustrated, if governments refuse to adopt a technology that keeps improving”, he said. In his eyes, facial recognition hits are just one part of an investigation.

23、Charles Blackman: Alice in Wonderland
An Exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), Australia
10 June —12 August 2019
Venue (地点) The Ian Potter Centre
Admission Free entry
Charles Blackman is famous for his beautiful paintings of dreams. In 1956, he heard for the first time Lewis Carroll’s extraordinary tale of Alice in Wonderland—the story of a Victorian girl who falls down a rabbit hole, meets a lot of funny characters and experiences all kinds of things. At that time, Blackman’s wife was suffering from progressive blindness. The story of Alice moving through the strange situations, often disheartened by various events, was similar to his wife’s experiences. It also reflected so much of his own life. All this contributed to the completion of the Alice in Wonderland paintings.

24、 The two granite boulders(花岗岩石), known as the Dinnie Stones together weigh nearly 332.5 kg. Ninety men have lifted them since their rediscovery in 1953. They are named after Donald Dinnie, who carried them across Potarch Bridge in 1860. Just one woman, Jan Todd, lifted them in 1979. Leigh Holland-Keen became only the second woman to do it. She said,“It was fantastic, quite an emotional experience. I felt crazy to be able to do that, and having the crowd being so positive created an amazing atmosphere.”
Holland-Keen, 29, who is an Australian nurse, was inspired by her mother and stepfather’s love of weight training, and started going to the gym when she was only about 14. She first attempted to lift the stones last year, while accompanying her mother and stepfather who had come to try it (her stepfather successfully lifted them in 2009). She hadn’t expected to attempt to lift them and hadn’t trained for it, but couldn’t pass the opportunity up.“I tried it and was very close, so I thought maybe I could actually do these within the next couple of years,” she says.“My mum and I made it our goal to train and get these up.”
She also says,“The appeal of weightlifting is in not giving up. It’s good to constantly challenge yourself. If you can’t lift it up the first time you try, it’s something to work towards. You keep persevering and then you can do it. It feels good to achieve it. Training can go so well and then on the day anything can happen. If I did make it, it would be fantastic. If I didn’t, I would just come back next year and try again.”
Holland-Keen borrowed some replica(复制品) Dinnie Stones rings and loaded them with weights and trained in her garage three to four times a week, for up to two hours at a time. She says, “It’s getting better but there is a common myth that if you lift heavy weights, you’re going to look very manly.”
