21、Hidden London: the Exhibition
Visit an “abandoned” Tube station underworld and discover what secrets are hidden beneath our busy streets in our new Hidden London exhibition at London Transport Museum!
Hidden London: the Exhibition takes you on a journey of some of London’s most secret spaces in the world’s oldest underground system. These “forgotten” parts of the Tube network have incredible stories to tell about Britain’s wartime past.
You can enjoy the largest number of rare photos and objects from disused stations that have been brought together in one location.
Discover stories about how Churchill took shelter at the height of the Blitz deep underground at Down Street station. See how shelterers lived down at Clapham South station, where they slept and how they kept entertained.
You can also explore other locations that we have recreated in our Global Gallery, including the historic abandoned ticket hall at Aldwych station with an original 1930s ticket office.
The exhibition uncovers why these “lost” parts of the underground network exist. Changes in population, economic priorities and political pressures have all led to spaces being abandoned. But they rarely stay that way. While some sections of the Tube system lie “forgotten”, many have been repurposed for new activities and are used for special Hidden London tours, growing salad leaves, and for filming locations, including Charing Cross, which featured in Skyfall (2012).

22、 In the UK, electric and other low-emission(低排放)cars, vans, and buses could be given special green plates to encourage more people to buy such cars, and promote awareness for “clean” cars.
Strange as it may seem, there is some reason to believe that something as small as this could make a big difference. Already, similar ideas have been put into effect in Norway, Canada, Latvia, and China, and the results have been encouraging.
Elisabeth Costa, director of the Behavioural Insights Team, explains, “Simple changes based on behavioral science can have a big impact. Green plates would be more noticeable to road users, and this increased attraction can help normalise the idea of clean vehicles, highlighting(使突出)the changing social norms(规范)around vehicle ownership.”
Actually, hybrids and electric cars accounted for 5.5% of the cars sold in the UK in the first half of the year, compared to 4.2% for the same period in 2017.
However, colored plates can only go so far. At the end of the day, you need strong, concrete measures if you want to support a market like electric cars. The UK already has generous subsidies(补贴)for electric cars, but a study for the RAC Foundation found that the lack of reliable, easy-to-use charging stations is the main roadblock to people purchasing more electric cars. This was repeated by separate research from AA, the UK’s largest motorist association, which found that although 1 in 2 young drivers want electric cars, 8 out of 10 drivers feel that the lack of sufficient electrical chargers is the main reason not to buy an electric car.
Yet this all shows that more and more people are nearing a tipping point where they are willing to buy electric cars. And a small PR stunt(噱头), the “coolness factor” of the colored plates could end up making a difference. Similarly, having red plates for the more polluting cars might also play a role.
A spokesman for the Environmental Transport Association said, “While green number plates will be positive PR for low-emission car makers and early adopters of the technology alike, to be truly effective any such measures will need to at the same time shame the drivers of the most polluting vehicles.”
【1】Why does the UK give green license plates to cars?
A.To promote car sales.
B.To beautify the environment in the UK.
C.To separate “clean” cars from polluting cars.
D.To inspire people to buy low-emission vehicles.
【2】What does the underlined sentence “colored plates can only go so far” mean?
A.The results of giving colored plates are discouraging.
B.The measures of giving colored plates will be at an end.
C.Giving colored plates has a limited impact on promoting “clean” cars.
D.Giving colored plates will be replaced by strong, concrete measures.
【3】Why do most drivers choose not to buy an electric car?
A.Subsidies for electric cars are not attractive.
B.Charging stations are not readily available.
C.They aren’t fond of the green color.
D.Electric cars are unaffordable to them.
【4】What did the spokesman for the Environmental Transport Association focus on?
A.Banning people from buying polluting cars.
B.Continuing the use of green number plates.
C.Replacing green plates with red ones.
D.Shaming the drivers of polluting cars into buying “clean” cars.
23、On Friday January 14, 2022, blast was heard 2,000 km away in New Zealand and 3,300 km away in Australia. Boats crashed into a quiet harbor in Southern California, a remote island was battered in Japan by 4 foot waves and two women were swept to their deaths on a beach in Peru some 6,000 miles from an undersea volcanic eruption so powerful that the tsunami which it set off stirred ocean waters halfway across the globe.
But on Sunday, as reports of the volcano’s effect crowded in from far-flung countries, there was little word from Tonga, the island nation just 40 miles from the site of the extraordinary explosion. As concerns from all over the world grew, the nation of about 100,000 people remained largely cut off from the rest of the world, its undersea internet cables knocked out of commission by the volcano.
In Tonga on Sunday, many residents lost not only communication channels but electric power. Up to 80,000 people there could be affected, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies told the BBC.
New Zealand and other nations in the region pledged to give Tonga aid to recover. But with heavy concentrations of airborne ash making flights impossible, just like the Iceland volcano eruption in 2021, it was difficult even to know what was needed. Ardern, the New Zealand prime minister, said flights over Tonga were planned for Monday or Tuesday, depending on ash conditions.
Tonga has experienced a succession of natural disasters in recent years. In 2018, more than 170 homes were destroyed and two people killed by Cyclone Gita, a Category 5 tropical storm. In 2020, Cyclone Harold caused about $111 million in damage.
【1】Which country wasn’t affected by Tanga undersea volcanic eruptions?
A.America
B.Japan
C.Peru
D.Iceland
【2】How much area of the seawater did the volcano stir?
A.20%
B.30%
C.50%
D.70%
【3】Which phrase can replace the underlined words “out of commission”?
A.out of action
B.out of range
C.out of existence
D.out of account
【4】What can be inferred from the passage?
A.The Iceland volcano eruption in 2021 made nearby flights delayed.
B.New Zealand as well as other nations in the region gave Tonga aid timely.
C.Flights could reach Tonga two days after the eruption.
D.The undersea volcanic eruption caused severer damage to Tonga than ever before.
24、Of the several films Hirokazu has made about childhood and children, this one is the most modest, but no less pleasing for its delicate style and small setting. This wise and funny film works small miracles in describing such a moment when kids turn from the wishfulness of childhood into shaping the world for themselves.
The sweetly reflective hero, a sixth-grader named Koichi, starts out by wishing for a volcano to erupt. Not just any volcano, but the one that towers above his town, smoking heavily and giving off ash. An eruption would lead to a withdrawing, which would lead, at least in his mind, to a reunion with his father and kid brother, who’ve been living in Hakata while Koichi lives with his mother and retired grandparents in Kagoshima. The volcano, knowing nothing of this, refuses to erupt, but Koichi hears of another approach to realizing the desired miracle.
One of the pleasures of I Wish is watching how kids behave — how Koichi attacks his dinner, for example. Another pleasure is rediscovering how kids think. These kids can be logical and ever so tricky. But children’s thought processes can also be fancy. A boy wishes he could play baseball like one of baseball stars, who eats curry for breakfast; so he, too, starts eating curry for breakfast, instead of practicing on the field. Another boy tries to wish his dead dog, Marble, back to life. And what does Koichi finally wish for? I wish you’d see this delightful film to find out.
