二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Drew Goodall was once homeless. But a chance of meeting with a stranger turned his life around. Over 2 decades ago, Goodall worked with stars like Brad Pitt and Hugh Grant, being eager to be an actor in London. But poor theater reviews destroyed his confidence.

Goodall ran out of acting offers. He ran out of money and was evicted, ending up on the streets of London. His home was a cardboard box, surviving on what little money people gave him. He took on many jobs like polishing and shining people’s shoes. And he never asked anyone for help.

He purchased a brush and a tin of polish from what little he had from begging and he began his trade in London’s financial district. Goodall didn’t have a license to trade so he was wary of the authorities. But after six months, one of his regular customers made Goodall an offer that would turn his life around.

Goodall was allowed to set up on the hall of his customer’s office, which gave him a more stable income. He was now off the streets. The business grew as he moved in to other establishments, inspiring Goodall to start his own shoeshine business Sunshine Shoeshine. He began hiring the homeless and those with special needs to help with his trade.

Goodall soon began earning around £250,000 a year in profit as he set up and expanded in various places around London. Sunshine Shoeshine employs mostly former homeless people like him. Goodall’s story and his way of giving back boosted his employees’ confidence as well, since he gave them a new chance in life.

Goodall remembers where he came from, and now he is able to transform lives through his efforts. This is what Sunshine Shoeshine is all about. He gives others the ability to take control of their lives once more. He just gives them a little push in the right direction.

    【1】What made Goodall lose confidence?

    A.His being homeless.

    B.Poor theatre previews.

    C.Bad comments on theatre.

    D.Competition between actors.

【2】Why did Goodall have to look out for the officials?

A.He didn’t have a place to trade at.

    B.He didn’t possess a permit.

C.He didn’t have confidence in trading.

D.He didn’t offer customers good service.

【3】What did Goodall bring to his employees?

    A.Their creativity.

    B.Their education.

    C.Their confidence.

    D.Their health.

【4】Which words can best describe Goodall?

    A.Ambitious but selfish.

    C.Confident but stubborn.

    D.Determined and helpful.

  • 22、What makes a word real? Who has the power to make those kinds of official decisions about words? Those are the questions many people have in mind. When most people say a word isn’t real, what they mean is that it doesn’t appear in a dictionary. That, of course, raises some other questions, including, who writes dictionaries?

Now, dictionaries are good resources, but they are changeable. If you ask dictionary editors, what they’ll tell you is that they’re just trying to keep up with people as people change the language. They’re watching what people say and what people write and trying to figure out what’s going to stick and what’s not going to stick.

Every January, dictionary editors go to the American Dialect Society Meeting every year, where among other things, they decide on the word of the year. There are about 200 or 300 people who come. Some of them are the best known linguists(语言学家) in the United States. In the past, some of the winners have been “staycation” to describe a vacation spent at home and “tweet” to describe a post made on the social networking service Twitter.

So how does a word get into a dictionary? It gets in because people use it and people keep using it, and dictionary editors are paying attention to people. If a community of speakers is using a word and knows what it means, it’s real. That word might be informal and that word might be a word that you think is illogical(不合逻辑的) or unnecessary, but as long as people are using the word, it is real. I hope that what you can do is to find language change not annoying but fun and interesting, just the way dictionary editors do. I hope you can enjoy being part of the creativity that is continually remaking our language and keeping it alive.

【1】Why do dictionaries change over time?

    A.Speakers keep changing language.

B.Linguists often make up new words.

    C.Dictionary editors change every year.

D.Words in the dictionary are out of date.

【2】Who has the right to decide the word of the year?

    A.New words inventors.

    B.American Officials.

    C.Dictionary editors.

    D.Famous linguists.

【3】What does the underlined word “staycation” mean in paragraph 3?

    A.Taking a holiday while working.

    B.Working online at home.

C.Staying at home for the moment.

D.Going on a vacation at home.

【4】What is the author’s attitude towards language changing?

    C.Uninterested.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Ashlee Larsen, of Melbourne, Australia, was eating in a local restaurant with her family when she noticed it had been a while since she had seen her son, two-year-old Brooklyn Larsen. So she decided to go check on him. She had left him playing in the indoor playground of the restaurant, which was within her view. But now he was not there. Thinking that the boy had probably been attracted by something and crawled out, Ashlee looked for him everywhere in the restaurant.

Curiosity is a character of most children, and Brooklyn was no different. However, Ashlee was still shocked when she saw him smiling at her from inside the toy machine up to his knees in stuffed toys. One would think this would have scared the child. Well, no. Brooklyn was smiling and giggling to his mom. He was happy to have so many toys to play with and was throwing the toys down the chute for all the people who had come around to see what had happened. Some kids, who were also having dinner in the restaurant, gathered around the toy machine, picked up the toys from the end of the chute and cheered joyfully.

Amused as the adults were, they knew they had to get Brooklyn out of the machine somehow. The restaurant manager called the firemen for help. However, before they could arrive, Brooklyn began to cry. This was when Ashlee’s brother Troy stepped in and tried to get the boy out of the machine. It was very hard because the chute was blocked by the toys Brooklyn had thrown and the boy was stuck. At that moment, Ashlee got an idea that maybe she could think of a way to motivate the boy to come out by himself.

    注意:1 .续写一段文字;

    2 .续写词数应为100左右;

    3 .请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Considering Brooklyn had played for some time and must be thirsty, Ashlee thought his favorite orange juice might work.
