二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Five simple things that are actually complex

The proof for “1+1=2”is 300 pages long

1 In the early 20th century, Bertrand Russell wanted to prove that mathematics worked, so he decided to start with the simplest concept and prove 1+1=2. However, it took the mathematician and philosopher 372 pages of complex sums.

Defining the word “the” is really difficult

The word “the” is one of the most common words in English. 2 For example, why do we say, “I have the flu, ” but not “I have the headache? ”In the Oxford English Dictionary, there are almost two dozen different ways the word can be used in a sentence correctly.

    Yawning

Some people say we yawn to keep us alert (警觉的) by taking in oxygen. However, various experiments have shown that yawning actually cools down the brain.3 As for why yawning is contagious (感染性的), no one knows that either.

Left and right have been confusing philosophers for years

Would you explain the concept of left and right in terms of your relative position to a well-known landmark (地标性建筑)? 4 It’s a question that has been puzzling philosophers for years because, without a point of reference, it’s difficult to define what left and right actually are.

    5

You’d think that the reason we enjoy things is because it feels good in some way, but it’s only half the story. There’s a famous experiment where wine experts were fooled into thinking a cheap bottle of wine was an outstanding one just by switching the labels. Their enjoyment of the product wasn’t based on appreciation of wine—it was based on the fact that they were told it was good wine.

A.What you feel may not be the truth.

B.We enjoy things for reasons other than enjoyment.

C.But what if you were talking to one who couldn’t see?

D.We all know that one plus one equals two, but do you know why?

E.In fact, there is no universally agreed theory for why we actually yawn.

F.Maybe you’d refer to the move of the Earth or something comparably huge.

G.Most of us have probably never stopped to think about how strange a word it actually is.

  • 22、“What would you do if you weren’t in science? ”I was once asked during an interview many years ago. I hadn’t really thought about it before. A constructor? I was interested in construction and had spent some summer holidays in college as a frame carpenter. A musician? It was appealing. I’m not too bad on guitar but I thought that I might be bored with it one day. “A mailman, I shouted out, “so I could walk around all day and think about things. “Little did I know then that, after a 30-year career in science, I would in fact end up as a letter carrier.

I first became inspired by the idea that my work could make a practical impact on the world after I changed from academia(学术生涯)to biotech. I had initially been attracted to scientific research by the fun of solving problems and discovering something new. Before I started in biotech and my work became more practical, I had thought that my research could lead to potential treatments for some human diseases.

However, none of my projects resulted in anything real to help people. My first biotech job ended when the company was restructured. I got a job at another biotech company, but it went bankrupt(破产)one year later. Eventually, after some part-time consulting work, I decided I needed something more permanent, but I failed to find another full-time position in a science-related field. I started to wonder how I could still make a meaningful contribution.

I decided to get a job as a letter carrier in a post office. I have 30 years’ experience of conducting scientific research, yet here I am just delivering mail. But I try to keep an open mind. Although I miss research, I do enjoy getting to walk around and think about things. Lately I’ve been thinking about COVID-19 and my career. I certainly hope I’m making a difference to the society by delivering medicines and checks. Now, I think I’ll make a more positive impact on people’s lives than before.

  • 23、Many people dream of traveling into outer space. However, spending too much time in space may cause health problems, according to NASA.

    Muscle and bone loss

In a weightless environment, astronauts (宇航员) don’t need to use their muscles to support themselves, so the muscles start shrinking. To keep their muscles strong, astronauts need to exercise about 2 hours each day on the International Space Station.

    Sleep disorder

In space, the sun rises every 90 minutes. It is hard for astronauts to get used to this light-dark cycle when they sleep. Now they have individual seeping pods (分离舱) that help shut out some of the light. Sill, studies have found that most astronauts only sleep about six hours each night, even though they should have eight and a half hours.

    Brain Change

Scientists have found that the position of the brain changes during space flight. It can influence how we see, stay balanced and move around. That’s why some astronauts can’t control their movement and balance after returning to the earth. Scientists have also found that astronauts may get used to this change after going on more space flights. But more research is still needed.

GUANGZHOU — At least 25 people have been confirmed dead after Super Typhoon Usagi made landfall in China’s Guangdong Province on Sunday evening, according to the provincial flood control headquarters.

“Electricity and water supply were cut off in the Huilai County, Jieyang City, and houses were collapsed as wind speeds at the center exceeded 180 km per hour on Sunday afternoon,” said Li Feng, a border police officer of the city.

Intercity trains between Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai were suspended (暂停) at 6 pm and nearly 50 trains, including those along the high-speed lines to Beijing, Shenzhen and Hong Kong, would be suspended until Tuesday, according to the Guangzhou Railway Corporation.

At a Xiecheng gas station on National Road 324near Shanwei City, where at least 13 of the 25 victims were killed, winds were strong enough to blow cars off the road and all traffic was stopped. Resident Li Huolong said he was on his way home in Shanwei when the back window of his car was broken by the wind. Educational authorities in 14 cities ordered schools to suspend classes on Sunday, a school day in China because of the three-day Mid-Autumn Festival which just ended. More than 47000 fishing boats were in harbor, with nearly 20000 fishermen kept on shore. All beaches in the province have been closed.
