  • 21、Tobogganing, or sledding (雪橇), likely comes before the colonization of North America. Records show that Canada’s First Peoples used small sleds to transport their belongings and food between camps, Raymond Flower writes in The History of Skiing and Other Winter Sports. But modern-day sled races can trace their origins back to the Swiss Alps in the late 1800s when British tourists decided to race in wooden luges (a sled used by one person) that locals had used to travel through snow. The origin is debatable in snowy northern New York, however, where there $ evidence that Albany held bobsled (a sled used by two or more people) races as early as 1885.

Wherever they began, sled races quickly became popular. The famous Cresta Run, named after the Swiss town near the base of its course, was built in 1885 using snowbanks. The first organized competition was in 1898, hosted by the first bobsled club in nearby St.Moritz (a city in Switzerland). It was then that sledding began to separate from the luge to include two new sports: bob sledding, and skeleton sledding (俯式雪橇).

Cresta Run is considered the birthplace of the skeleton, a particularly daring form of sledding. Unlike the luge, where competitors ride feet-first on a sled with metal runners, the skeleton sledding is a steel sled with a slim appearance. Riders lie down on the sled headfirst, then drop suddenly down an ice track. Bobsledding, meanwhile, involves teams of two to four in which the person in front controls directions and the player in back brakes when needed. It earned its name after competitors started swinging back and forth to speed up the sled.

Bobsledding initially overtook skeleton sledding in popularity, becoming one of a handful of sports played at the first Winter Games in 1924. The skeleton sledding was limited to the Cresta Run for decades because other bob runs around the world were not built for the steel skeleton sled. But in the 1970s, adjustments were made to both the skeleton and bob runs in order to include the event at future winter games.

【1】What can we infer about Raymond Flower?

    A.He is a writer.

    B.He is good at sledding.

    C.He invented the sledding race.

D.He set the first record of sledding.

【2】How does skeleton sledding differ from the luge?

A.Skeleton sledding runs on metal runners.

B.Skeleton sledding doesn’t have back brakes.

C.Riders on Skeleton sledding sled with their feet.

D.Skeleton sledding needs players to lie down on it headfirst.

【3】What limited the popularity of skeleton sledding?

    A.Its special shape.

    B.Its speed.

    C.Its steel runners.

    D.Its unsuitable adjustments.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

    A.Why is sledding so popular?

B.How did sledding develop in Switzerland?

    C.What are sledding adventures about?

D.How did people kill time in North America?

  • 22、When romantic partners argue over things like finances, jealousy, or other interpersonal issues, they tend to employ their current feelings as fuel for a heated argument. But thinking about the future helps overcome relationship conflicts, according to a University of Waterloo study just published online in Social Psychological and Personality Science. Alex Huynh, a doctoral candidate in psychology is the lead author of the study, which he published with Igor Grossmann from the University of Waterloo, and Daniel Yang from Yale University.

Previous research has shown that third-perspective reasoning can be a positive strategy for reconciliation(调解) of interpersonal struggles. Huynh and his collaborators investigated whether similar benefit can be induced by simply thinking about the future. Study participants were instructed to reflect on a recent conflict with a romantic partner or a close friend. One group of participants were then asked to describe how they would feel about the conflict one year in the future, while another group was asked to describe how they feel in the present.

The team examined participants’ written responses through a text-analysis program for their use of pronouns — such as I, me, she, he. These choices of pronouns were used to capture participants’ focus on the feelings and behaviour of those involved in the conflict. Written responses were also examined for forgiveness and reinterpreting the conflict more positively, both of which implied the participants’ use of reasoning strategies.

The researchers found that envisioning future relationship affected both participants’ focus on their feelings, and their reasoning strategies. As a result, participants reported more positivity about their relationship altogether, especially when study participants extended their thinking about the relationship a year into the future.

“Our study demonstrates that adopting a future-oriented perspective in the context of a relationship conflict — reflecting on how one might feel a year from now — may be a valuable coping tool for one’s psychological happiness and relationship well-being,” said Huynh.

【1】What do romantic partners do in face of most disagreements?

A.They lose faith in their future.

B.They focus on their present feelings.

C.They look forward to a fierce conflict.

D.They care more about financial problems.

【2】What does the underlined word “induced” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?

    A.Caused.

    B.Explained.

    C.Reduced.

    D.Improved.

【3】What do we know about the study?

A.All the study participants described how they felt both in the present and in the future.

B.Study participants described their recent relationship with their romance partners or friends.

C.A text-analysis program was employed to examine participants’ use of negative words.

D.The reasoning strategies in participants’ written responses were well worthy of note.

【4】What can be the best title of the text?

A.You have a year to solve your interpersonal problems!

B.Thinking about future is essential for relationship maintenance!

C.Your current feelings are the real cause of your heated arguments!

D.Beneficial reasoning is a positive strategy for reconciliation!

The life of Pi then enters its third stage when their lifeboat washes up on the shores of Mexico and the tiger escapes into a nearby forest leaving Pi alone. After the Mexicans refuse to believe Pi's story,he changes his tale by replacing the animals with his mother,a cook and a sailor and asks the Mexicans which one they prefer. They prefer hearing the first story though they do not believe a word of it.

  • 24、Rachel Carson was a scientist by profession, but the lines from the open chapter of her 1962 book Silent Spring. “A Fable for Tomorrow”, show her talent as a writer. By imagining a world without birds, she aimed to alert (使警惕) not only the scientific community but also the general public to the damaging effects of human activity on natural ecosystem-----in particular, to the harmful use of pesticides (杀虫剂), such as DDT. She believed that the chemical industry was knowingly causing harm to plants, animals and even humans, and wished to see pesticides used in a more responsible, limited and carefully monitored way.

Carson urged people to make themselves aware of the facts and do something about the situation. Silent Spring contains a lot of scientific research and case studies. The book details the programme of removing gypsy moth, which killed birds, in addition to killing gypsy moths. Another case study was the fire-ant programme that killed cows, but not fire ants. The book also gives dozens of other examples of removal programmes that did nothing to reduce the problems they were originally designed to solve. The 50 or so pages at the end of the book list Carson’s source, showing how thorough and precise she was as a scientist.

Silent Spring was not, however, received positively by everyone. Though Carson’s research was strong and was supported by most scientists who reviewed her book, the book quickly became a target for critics in the pesticide industry. They said that Carson did not understand the science behind her arguments because she was a marine biologist rather than a chemist. Some also said that her work was more emotional than scientific.

These were attempts to damage Carson’s reputation (名声) and stop her from influencing public policy, but she remained determined to stand by her research. Carson appeared in public and on television to defend her claims----and today, more than 50 years after it was published, the voice of Silent Spring is still ringing loud and clear.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文

My teacher gave us an assignment that should have been easy. “Okay, class,” he said. “For the month of November, we will turn this wall into our Thanksgiving art gallery. For tonight’s homework, I want you to create a picture of one thing you are thankful for, and we will hang it here.”

We were supposed to spend the last part of class of figuring out an idea for our “thankful” picture. But the more I try to think of the one perfect thing, the more panicked and puzzled I became! Finally the school bell rang and it was time to pack up and go.

“I am going to make a picture about fishing with my grandpa,” my friend Amy said as we walked home. “What about you?”

“For some reason, this project is making me nervous,” I told her. “What if I choose one person and everyone else feels left out?”

“It’s just a homework assignment.” said Amy. “Do you really think people will be offended?

“I don’t know,” I said, walking through the fallen leaves.

“Then why not just pick a random awesome thing instead?” suggest Amy.

“But I’m thankful for a billion random things,” I frowned, “How am I supposed to just choose one?”

“Just close your eyes!” said Amy. “You don’t know the ‘just close your eyes’ trick? It’s the best. You write down a bunch of choices on separate pieces of paper. Spread them out. Close your eyes, and pick one.”

“But what if I pick the wrong one?” I asked.

“That’s the whole point,” said Amy. “There’s no wrong one here. I will show you.”

I followed Amy across the street to a giant tree with eye-catching fallen leaves. So many leaves had fallen onto the grass that it looked like a rainbow-colored carpet. “Now go ahead and pick the very best leaf.” she jokingly challenged me.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
