21、 The quality of patience goes a long way toward your goal of creating a more peaceful and loving self. The more patient you are, the more accepting you will be of what life is, rather than insisting that life be exactly as you would like it to be. Without patience, life is extremely frustrating. 【1】Patience adds some ease and acceptance to your life. It's important for inner peace.
【2】If you are stuck in a traffic jam, late for an appointment, being patient would mean keeping yourself from building a mental snowball before your thinking gets out of hand and gently reminding yourself to relax. It might also be a good time to breathe as well as an opportunity to remind yourself that, in the bigger scheme of things, being late is "small stuff".
Patience is a quality of heart that can be greatly enhanced with deliberate practice. 【3】 They are the periods of time that I set up in my mind to practice the art of patience. Life itself becomes a classroom, and the curriculum is patience. You can start with as little as five minutes and build up your capacity for patience over time. What you'll discover is truly amazing. Your intention to be patient, especially if you know it's only for a short while, immediately strengthens your capacity for patience. Patience is one of those qualities where success feeds on itself. Once you reach little milestone-five minutes of successful patience-you'll begin to see that you do indeed have the capacity to be patient, even for longer periods of time. Over time, you may even become a patient person.
Being patient will help you to keep your perspective. You will see even a difficult situation, say your present challenge, isn't "life or death" but simply a minor obstacle that must be dealt with.【4】.
A.An effective way that I have found to deepen my own patience is to create actual practice periods.
B.You are more easily annoyed and bothered.
C.It is generally believed that the quality of being patient is very difficult to develop.
D.Becoming more patient involves opening your heart to the present moment, even if you don't like it.
E.Without patience, you will see the same scene as an emergency complete with yelling, frustration, hurt feelings.
F.If you lack patience, you are destined to fail in what you are pursuing.
22、 The moment I was born, I seemed to be part of a set, as if my twin brother David and I were a package deal. We faced constant comparisons in our physical appearance. People were always comparing our personalities and academic performances as well! These constant comparisons made me decide not to go to the same university as my twin brother.
That is not to say we didn’t have good academic experiences in the past or didn’t get along. In eleventh grade, we were placed in the same math experimental class. I recall arriving early to the first class and being a bit disappointed when I saw David already seated at his desk. It is hard to avoid comparisons when we were in the same class. However, we found that we actually worked well together, in our own way. We would argue about the best way to solve a problem and debate its answer. As the year went on, I noticed that our teacher kept moving us closer and closer together. Our argument was actually productive.
However, we were two very different candidates. I was very involved in extracurricular(课 外的) activities, while David had better test scores than I did. I’m fond of writing while David enjoys playing computer games. I am currently studying English and French at McGill University, while David is studying computer science at Union College.
Besides escaping comparisons, there have been other benefits to going to different universities. The first one is that we are forced to talk to each other, as we no longer see each other every day. This is healthier for our relationship. The second, also the more important one, is that after having so many similar experiences together we can have our own experiences separate from one another.
Going to a different university has benefited me thus far. It allows for more personal growth, and I’m not attached to the label of being a twin.
【1】Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.Why Do People Like to Compare Me with My Twin Brother?

【2】What can be inferred about the author?
A.He was fed up with people’s comparisons.
B.He was glad to hear people’s comparisons.
C.He is more handsome than David.
D.He was better at academic subjects than David.
【3】What does the author think of him and David studying in the same math experimental class?
A.Boring. B.Harmful. C.Awful. D.Beneficial.
【4】The author chose to go to a different university in order to ________.
A.avoid seeing David B.escape arguing with David
C.pursue a different experience D.strengthen bonds with David
23、 The practice of encouraging laughter with the sound of laughter itself dates back to the 16th century. During performances of Shakespearean plays, there were people who laughed at just the right moments. This would cause other members of the audience to laugh in a similar way, thus making the show seem funnier.
Centuries later, when comedy programs were popular on radio, the sound of a laughing audience was a natural part of performances that were aired live. To make sure his performances were aired at the same time in each time zone, actor Bing Crosby had his show prerecorded. Eventually, one of the show's writers realized that big laughs from old recordings could be added in to follow new jokes. So the world was introduced to canned laughter.
When TV came along, laugh tracks were recorded from the live studio audience that was present at a show. But sometimes, the audience didn't laugh at the expected time, making these moments seem dull to those watching at home. To fix this problem, TV audio engineer Charley Douglass invented a machine called the Laff Box.
Douglass' Laff Box was a collection of tapes connected to different keys. Each tape contained canned laughter that-was-carefully selected by Douglass for its particular quality. For example, one tape might have produced very soft laughs, while another produced loud cackles(咯咯笑). The machine could be played almost like a musical instrument: if the live audience didn't laugh enough, Douglass would “sweeten” the audio by adding the right amount and type of canned laughter. This technique could even be used when no audience was present, as with cartoons. Critics have long claimed that canned laughter is merely a trick to make people laugh at bad jokes. Live laugh tracks, however, can still be heard on popular modern shows like The Big Bang theory. Sometimes it's just more fun to share in the laughter - canned or otherwise.

【3】What can we learn about Douglass' Laff BOX?
A.It can offer many types of laughter.
B.It is inconvenient for people to use.

24、 I’ve spent over a year in India, and in those 365 plus days, I’ve learned a lot about getting around Indian cities. My biggest lessons have been learned through being cheated, particularly by taxi and rickshaw (人力车) drivers, but that doesn’t mean those are bad ways to travel, as long as you know what you’re doing. Below are the best ways to get around the city of Delhi, India, and tips for how to keep from being the victim of scams (欺骗).
Taking taxis is a great way to get around the city of Delhi and chances are, if you arrive in Delhi by plane, as soon as you make it through customs, you’ll be swarmed by Indian taxi drivers. At the Delhi airport, be sure to arrange for a taxi to your hotel at one of the two Delhi Traffic Police Taxi Booths. One is inside the airport, and one is outside. The key is to make sure to go to a booth run by the police rather than by independent taxi drivers.
Rickshaws are one of my favorite ways to get around Indian cities, in part because it’s how the locals often travel. Auto-rickshaws are more common, but bicycle rickshaws are still used in Old Delhi. If you do have a chance to take a bicycle rickshaw, you should do it at least once for a unique experience that should only set you back about 15 rupees. Auto-rickshaw rates around Delhi range between 30 and 80 rupees, depending on distance.
If you really want to travel around Delhi like the locals, take a public bus. Indian buses become very crowded and most do not have air conditioning. They are, however, very cheap. A bus trip won’t set you back any more than 15 rupees, as long as you stay within the city limits. Since Indian buses get so crowded, try to board the bus at the start of the route so you can get a seat.
The train is a great way to get around within the city of Delhi. Fares are reasonable, between six and 22 rupees. All departure announcements are in both Hindi and English, and tokens can be purchased for between six and 22 rupees.
【1】The author is trying to __________ in Delhi through this text.
A.explain the difficulties of traveling B.expect us to travel around

A.go out of the airport B.go to a police-run booth
C.show your ticket to the driver D.pay more to the drivers to keep safe
【3】The author suggests taking a rickshaw in order to __________.
A.help the local rickshaw drivers B.enjoy the comfortable trip
C.gain some unique experience D.save some money
【4】What can we infer from the passage?
A.You’ll have to speak English if you travel around in India.
B.It will be difficult for you to get a seat if you get on the bus halfway.
C.A rickshaw driver only charges whatever amount you give him.
D.You won’t have to pay much if you travel around by bus in India.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When Demetris Payne saw a missed call from her son’s junior high school, she knew something was wrong.
With a sigh, the mom from Shreveport, Louisiana, called back. A school official said her 13-year-old son Jadarien was suspended for three days for talking back to his teacher. She was told to pick him up right away.
“Three days seems kind of hard— why not do in-school suspension?” Payne asked.
But since Jadarien had been in trouble once before, they said he had to leave.
On arriving home, Payne took away her son’s cellphone and video games. She left him with her 70-year-old father who lives with them.
“When I got home from work he’s eating strawberries and having fun with my dad,” Payne said. “It was like a vacation.”
Payne knew she needed to do more to discipline him.
So she handed him a garden tool and asked him to start cleaning up the yard. When he was finished, she told him he’d be volunteering his garden services free of charge for people in need during the three days. “He didn’t believe it,” Payne said. “I can be soft on him and baby him sometimes.”
But Payne was serious. She posted a photo of Jadarien online with the heading, “Yard service-FREE” explaining that he got suspended from school and would clean gardens or wash cars for members of the community over the next three days.
Within hours, some people contacted Payne to request the free service.
So she drove Jadarien from house to house. She stood by the car, watching him work. Jadarien spent about two hours cleaning up the yards of at least eight different homes. When he was finished, Payne took him to the library, where he spent the rest of the day reading and completing his homework.
“We explained to him that these chores (琐事) weren’t to punish, but to teach him a lesson and teach him about discipline,’’ Payne said. ‘‘Whether the teacher is right or wrong, always respect your teachers.”
On Tuesday, Jadarien was happy to finally head back to school.
