  • 21、Here’s an unusual story: a diamond ring was recently found in an egg. The magician, Liu Qian, discovered it in front of an audience of millions at CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala. Liu’s magic tricks have made the centuries old art of magic fashionable once again, and made him the hottest magician in China.

As a seasoned magician from Taiwan, Liu is popular worldwide for his magic shows. Countries he has performed in include the United States, Japan, South Korea and the UK. Witnessing something impossible happen right before your eyes is the root of people’s love for magic.

Liu is known for his interaction with his audiences. He has a unique understanding of showmanship(演出技巧)。“It’s actually thinking rather than one’s manipulation (处理) skills that is more important to achieving a successful magic show. We think carefully about how to design the shows creatively, to make them appear more interesting,” Liu said.

Liu Qian’s success dated back to his childhood. Born in 1976 in Taiwan, he found himself attracted to a magic toy in a shop when he was seven years old. At the age of 12, he won Taiwan’s Youth Magic Contest, which was judged by the great American magician, David Copperfield.

Yet, Liu never planned on becoming a professional magician. He studied Japanese literature at university and only hoped to be an amateur magician in his spare time. However, his failure to find a proper job after graduation pushed him towards magic as a career.

To refine his performing skills, he has performed on streets, roads and fields, for passersby, policemen and farmers.

  • 23、   About ten men in every hundred suffer from color blindness in some way. Women are luckier; only about one in two hundred is affected in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it’s safer to be driven by a woman!

There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases, a man may not be able to see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shades of green. Sometimes a person cannot tell the differences between green and blue. In rare cases an unlucky man may see everything in shade of green-a strange world indeed.

Color blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called “cones”. These help us to see in a bright light and to tell difference between colors. There are also millions of “rods”, but these are used for seeing when it is near dark. They show us shape but no color.

Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes prefer blue to yellow. A red light will not attract insects, but a blue lamp will. In a similar way human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the aid of cones in our eyes, we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the aid of rods we can see shapes at night. One day we may even learn more about the invisible colors around us.

1Why do some people say it’s safer to be driven by women?

    A.Women are more careful.

    B.There are fewer color-blind women.

C.Women are fonder of driving than men.

D.Women are weaker but quicker in thinking.

2Which of the statements about the color-blind is true?

A.Not all of them have the same problem in recognizing color.

B.None of them can see deep red.

C.None of them can tell the difference between blue and green.

D.All of them see everything in shades of green.

3According to the passage, with the help of the “cones”, we can____

    A.tell different shapes

    B.see in a weak light

    C.tell different colors

    D.kill mosquitoes

4In which magazine would you most likely find this passage?

    A.International Eye Science

    B.Let’s Explore Nature

    C.Collections of Women’s Studies

    D.Global Warning News

  • 24、According to a new US study, couples who expect their children to look after them in old age should hope they have daughters because daughters are twice as attentive as sons overall.

The research by Angelina Grigoryeva, from Princeton University, found that, while women provide as much care for their elderly parents as they can manage, men do as little as they can get away with and often leave it to female family members.

Her analysis of the family networks of 26,000 old Americans concluded that gender(性别) is one of the most important things that decide whether or not people will actively care for their elderly parents.

In a paper presented at the annual conference of the American Sociological Association in San Francisco, she concludes that simply having a sister makes men likely provide less care. Using data from the University of Michigan Health and Retirement Study, a study which has been tracking a cross-section of over 50s for the last decade, she calculated that women provide an average of 12.3 hours a month of care for elderly parents while men offer only 5.6 hours.

"Sons reduce their relative caregiving efforts when they have a sister, while daughters increase theirs when they have a brother."

"This suggests that sons pass on parent caregiving responsibilities to their sisters."

In the UK, the 2011 Census showed that there are now around 6.5 million people with caring responsibilities, a figure which has risen by a tenth in a decade.

But many are doing so at the risk of their health. The census showed that those who provide 50 hours or more of care a week while trying to hold down a fulltime job are three times more likely to be struggling with ill health than their working counterparts who are not carers.

【1】According to the passage, what’s the most important factor to predict if people will actively care       for the elderly?

    A.Education.

    B.Gender.

    C.Career.

    D.Income.

    【2】The US study finds that_____.

B.sons are twice as likely as daughters to care for parents in old age

C.sons are unwilling to leave caregiving responsibilities to their sisters

D.sons and daughters seem to give equal care to their parents

【3】What does the author stress in the last paragraph?

A.People should give up their job to care for the elderly.

B.Many care providers work longer hours than others.

C.Many care providers have potential health problems.

D.People shouldn’t pass on caring responsibilities to others.

Once upon a time, there was an old man who couldn't read or write. When he was little, his family was so poor that he couldn't attend school. But he always dreamed of being able to read.

One day, he took his seven-year-old grandson to school.

Since he didn't have anything to do that day, he didn't leave immediately. Instead, he stood outside his grandson's classroom and looked in through the window.

The kids' teacher, who was an old man in his fifties, entered the classroom when the class began. The teacher was wearing thick glasses. He started teaching. Through watching him, the old man found something interesting, He noticed that the teacher could read nothing without putting his glasses on. As soon as he put on his glasses, he could read very well.

“How amazing! said the old man to himself.

He waited outside the classroom until the class was over and stopped the teacher.

“Excuse me, sir," said the old man to the teacher.

    “Yes?” said the teacher.

“I noticed something amazing. You can't read without the glasses, right?" said the old man.

"Yes, that's true. I can read nothing without them," replied the teacher.

"But you can read once you put them on, can't you?" asked the old man.

"Yes, that's true, too," replied the teacher, wondering why the old man was asking such strange questions.

The teacher looked at the old man, who left in a hurry with a big smile on his face.

The old man, who was extremely happy, decided to go to town to find an eyeglasses store. After being unable to read so many years, he finally found an easy way to read, which cheered him up. He realized what he needed to read was just a pair of glasses.
