21、If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows this, and nobody would think of questioning this fact.
【1】 When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly, either consciously or unconsciously. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough opportunity to become strong. 【2】 One of them exercises his arms and legs by playing tennis, while the other sits in a chair or a motor car all day.
If a friend complains that his arms are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame, or that he is just unlucky, and few of us realize that it is just as much his own fault as if it was his arms or legs that were weak. 【3】 But all of us can, if we have ordinary bodies and brains, improve our strength and our memory by the same means — practice.
Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have better memories than those who can? 【4】 It's because those who cannot read or write have to remember things. They cannot write them down in a little notebook and they have to remember dates, time and prices, names, songs and stories, so their memory is being exercised the whole time 【5】
A.Why is this?
B.What do you think of it?
C.Someone else says that he is poor in health.
D.The position is exactly the same as that of two people.
E.So if you want a good memory, practice remembering.
F.Not all of us can become extremely strong or extremely clever.
G.Yet many people do not seem to know that the memory works in the same way.
22、 The moment I was born, I seemed to be part of a set, as if my twin brother David and I were a package deal. We faced constant comparisons in our physical appearance. People were always comparing our personalities and academic performances as well! These constant comparisons made me decide not to go to the same university as my twin brother.
That is not to say we didn’t have good academic experiences in the past or didn’t get along. In eleventh grade, we were placed in the same class. I recall arriving early to the first class and being a bit disappointed when I saw David already seated at his desk. It was hard to avoid comparisons when we were in the same class. However, we found that we actually worked well together, in our own way. We would argue about the best way to solve a problem and debate its answer. As the year went on, I noticed that our teacher kept moving us closer and closer together. Our argument was actually productive.
However, we were two very different individuals. I was very involved in after-school activities, while David had better test scores than I did. I’m fond of writing while David enjoys playing computer games. I am currently studying English and French at McGill University, while David is studying computer science at Union College.
Besides escaping comparisons, there have been other benefits to going to different universities. The first one is that we are forced to talk to each other, as we no longer see each other every day. This is healthier for our relationship. The second, also the more important one, is that after having so many similar experiences together we can have our own experiences separate from one another. Going to a different university has benefited me thus far. It allows for more personal growth, and I’m not attached to the label of being a twin.
【1】What did the author think about the constant comparisons?
A.He was bored with them. B.He cared little about them.
C.He tried his best to study them. D.He forced himself to accept them.
【2】What was beneficial when the author was in the same class with David?
A.Strict teachers. B.Productive arguments.
C.Performing in his own way. D.Classmates ignoring the twins.
【3】Why does the author think it a wise choice to go to a different university?
A.He can escape arguing with David. B.He can avoid David in everyday life.
C.He can be less dependent on David. D.He can pursue a personal experience.
【4】What question is the passage mainly intended to answer?
A.Why did people like to compare me with my twin brother?
B.What are the main benefits of being twin brothers at school?
C.Why did I choose a different university with my twin brother?
D.How can twin brothers get along well with each other at school?
23、 Most ESL (English as a second language) students think that if you want to pass examinations, then study grammar. However, one of the speaking rules might sound strange to them. If you want to become fluent in English, then you should try to learn English without studying the grammar.
Studying grammar will only slow you down and confuse you. You will think about the rules when creating sentences instead of naturally saying a sentence like a native. Remember that only a small part of English speakers know more than 20% of all the grammar rules. Many ESL students know more grammar than native speakers. I can confidently say this with experience. I am a native English speaker, majored in English Literature, and have been teaching English for more than 10 years. However, many of my students know more details about English grammar than I do. When they sometimes ask me about grammar, I can easily look up the definition (定义) and apply it, but I can’t tell them the answer off the top of my head.
I often ask my native English friends some grammar questions, and only a few of them know the correct answer. However, they are fluent in English and can read, speak, listen, and communicate effectively.
Do you want to be able to recite the definition of a causative verb, or do you want to be able to speak English fluently?
【1】What opinion do most ESL students hold?
A.Grammar matters a lot only in speaking.
B.Grammar doesn’t matter much in speaking.
C.Grammar is very important in English exams.
D.Grammar can be ignored in English learning.
【2】What does the author say about studying grammar?
A.Many ESL students know little grammar.
B.Studying grammar will not make fluent English.
C.Most English speakers know 20% of all the grammar rules.
D.Students will say a sentence naturally when thinking about rules.
【3】The underlined part “off the top of my head” in paragraph 2 means “______”.
A.on purpose B.after checking C.with difficulty D.without thinking
【4】What’s the best title for the text?
A.Grammar counts! B.Mind your grammar!

24、 The microplastics(微型塑料) problem in the oceans has made its way to sea turtles in a big way. A new study has found microplastics in the stomach of every single turtle they tested—a total of 102 sea turtles.
The researchers tested more than 100 sea turtles from all seven kinds and three different oceans, and they were looking for man-made things less than 5 mm long. The most things the team found were fibers, which most likely came from clothing and fishing equipment.
“The influence of these particles on turtles is unknown,” said Emily Duncan. “Their small size means they can pass through the stomach without causing a problem, as is frequently reported with larger plastic pieces.”
The researchers found more than 800 man-made particles in the turtles, but since they only tested part of the stomach, they believe the total number of particles could be 20 times higher. They don’t know how the turtles take in the particles, but they think they are from polluted seawater and polluted plants.
Professor Brendan Godley said that eating microplastics isn’t the biggest problem to sea turtles at the moment, but it is a clear sign that we need to do a better job watching global waste.
This turtle study shows that we need to reduce the amount of plastic waste, so we can keep clean and healthy oceans for future people.
【1】The underlined part in paragraph 1 probably means “________”.
A.has gone into B.has made great effect on
C.has been walking to D.has tried to escape from
【2】How did the researchers find out the microplastics problem?
A.By giving examples. B.By comparing sea life.
C.By studying different sea animals. D.By testing turtles from different seas.

A.Larger plastic pieces cause trouble to sea turtles
B.Eating microplastics is the biggest danger to sea turtles
C.Scientists know clearly how sea turtles eat plastic pieces
D.The number of particles inside sea turtles is much higher
【4】The purpose of the text is to call on people to ________.
A.stop killing sea animals B.find out more plastic waste
C.control pollution to oceans D.carry out further researches
