  • 21、In a very special course at Knnet School, the social-science teacher Adam Smith guides his students through the “married life”. Unlike the traditional course, Adam makes his students experience the real problems married ones may face like housing and child care. “No one tells kids about money-managing problems,” says Adam.

Each student should act out in ten weeks what normally takes couples ten years to finish. In the first week, one member of each couple is asked to get an after school job a real one. During the term, the income rules their life-style. In the third week, the couples must find an apartment they can afford.

In the fifth week, the couples “have a baby” and then struggle to cover the costs of baby clothes and furniture. In week eight, the marriage comes to the breaking point by such disaster as a mother-in-law’s moving in or death. It’s all over by week ten (the tenth year of marriage). After serious discussion with lawyers about alimony (赡养费) and child support, the students get divorced (离婚) .

Adam’s course, which has “married” 1,000 students since its beginning six years ago, is widely supported by parents and students. Some of the students have found the experience making them realize their real life marry plans are wrong. Marianne Baldrica, 16, who tried “marriage” last term with her boyfriend Eric Zook, 15, said, Eric and I used to get along pretty well before we took the course together. But I wanted to live in the city, he wanted the country. He wanted lots of kids, I wanted no kids. It’s been four weeks since the course ended and Eric and I are just starting to talk to each other again.”

【1】What is the aim of Adam’s course?

    A. To tell students how to find a good partner.

    B. To teach students how to manage their money.

    C. To help students act as wives and husbands well.

    D. To show students the problems in real marriage life.

2What will happen in the eighth week?

    A. The couples will have a baby.

    B. The couples will have to find a flat.

    C. The husband will have to find a real job.

  • 22、My teacher,Mr.August J.Bachmann,was the most influential teacher I ever had.

I had gotten into trouble in his class:Another student had pushed me for fun,and I became angry and began to hit him.Mr.Bachmann stopped the fight, but instead of sending me to the office,he sat me down and asked a simple question,“Penna, why are you wasting your life? Why aren't you going to college?”

I didn't know anything about colleges or scholarships. No one had ever considered that a fatherless boy from the poorest neighborhood had a future. That day, instead of rushing off for lunch,he stayed and explained possible education options to me.At the end of our talk,he sent me to see a secretary who had a child at a state college. This was in 1962 at Emerson High School in Union City,New Jersey.

Well,55 years have passed, and what have I done with the knowledge he gave me?I gained a PhD from Fordham University when I was only 29.I taught English and social studies and then moved up the chain of command from teacher to principal(校长).

I've sat on the board for Magnet Schools of America and represented that organization at the United Nations.I've won a number of great educational awards. But where would I be if a truly caring teacher had not taken the time out of his lunch period to speak to me?It was without question only his confidence in me that helped me forward.

I have repaid his kindness hundreds of times by encouraging misguided youngsters to aim higher. If I have saved any children,it is because of him.If I have been a successful educator,it is because I had a great role model in Mr.Bachmann.

  • 23、In the United States, a company is working on a project that could change the way we think about public transportation. Its planned system would move people around in steel tubes. Those passengers would be traveling at speeds of up to 1,200 kilometers per hour.

The futuristic transportation system is called Hyperloop. Workers plan to test the system next year in a specially built community called Quay valley. The town will be powered entirely by energy from the sun.

The Hyperloop transport system is the idea of businessman Elon Musk. Dirk Ahlborn is head of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies. He says his company has taken Mr. Musk's idea and is developing a system that will be safe, environmentally friendly and fast.

It’s 100 percent solar-powered ...we’re not going to get up to 760 miles per hour, but we believe we can actually break the records that are exiting right now.”

This means that a four-hour drive from Los Angeles, California to Las Vegas, Nevada, could someday take only 30 minutes by Hyperloop.

The system involves a series of capsules that float inside a long tube. These containers wouldn’t need to travel along a pathway or track. The system has been designed to operate above or below ground.

Inside the tube there is a low-pressure environment very similar to an airplane that’s at high altitudes. So now the capsule travelling inside the tube doesn’t meet with as much resistance, and therefore can travel really fast with very little energy.

Dick Ahlborn and his company will use an eight-kilometer track in Quay Valley to find the best way to set up passenger traffic and repair capsules. A larger system will cost an estimated 6—10 billion dollars to build.

If Mr. Ahlborn and his company succeed, we may one day see these very fast Hyperloop capsules speeding through tubes around the world.

【1】What do we know about the Hyperloop transport system?

A.It travels along a pathway or track.

B.It was already tested in a community.

C.It was developed by a businessman.

    D.It is environmentally friendly.

【2】Why can the Hyperloop capsules travel fast?

    A.They are solar-powered.

    B.They travel at high altitudes.

C.There is less resistance inside the tube.

D.There is a powerful engine to drive them.

【3】What is the author’s attitude towards the Hyperloop transport system?

    A.Objective.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Subjective.

    D.Dissatisfied.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

    A.Steel Tubs

    B.A Creative Businessman

    C.Hyperloop Transport System

    D.Quay Valley

  • 24、Does happiness have a scent?

When someone is happy, can you smell it?

You can usually tell when someone is happy based on seeing them smile, hearing them laugh or perhaps from receiving a big hug. But can you also smell their happiness? Surprising new research suggests that happiness does indeed have a scent, and that the experience of happiness can be transmitted through smell, reports Phys.org.

For the study, 12 young men were shown videos meant to bring about a variety of emotions while researchers gathered sweat samples from them. All of the men were healthy and none of them were drug users or smokers, and all were asked to abstain from drinking or eating smelly foods during the study period.

Those sweat samples were then given to 36 equally healthy young women to smell, while researchers monitored their reactions. Only women were selected to smell the samples, apparently because previous research has shown that women have a better sense of smell than men and are also more sensitive to emotional signaling—though it's unclear why only men were chosen to produce the scents.

Researchers found that the behavior of the women after smelling the scents—particularly their facial expressions—indicated a relationship between the emotional states of the men who produced the sweat and the women who sniffed them.

“Human sweat produced when a person is happy brings about a state similar to happiness in somebody who breathes this smell,” said study co-author Gun Semin, a professor at Koc University in Turkey.

This is a fascinating finding because it not only means that happiness does have a scent, but that the scent is capable of transmitting the emotion to others. The study also found that other emotions, such as fear, seem to carry a scent too. This ensures previous research suggesting that some negative emotions have a smell, but it is the first time this has proved to be true of positive feelings.

Researchers have yet to isolate(分离) exactly what the chemical compound for the happiness smell is, but you might imagine what the potential applications for such a finding could be. Happiness perfumes, for instance, could be invented. Scent therapies(香味疗法)could also be developed to help people through depression or anxiety.

Perhaps the most surprising result of the study, however, is our broadened understanding of how emotions get communicated, and also how our own emotions are potentially managed through our social context and the emotional states of those around us.

【1】What is the main finding of the new research?

    A. Pleasant feelings can be smelt out.

    B. Negative emotions have a smell.

    C. Men produce more sweats.

    D. Women have a better sense of smell.

【2】The underlined part “abstain from” in Paragraph 3 probably means _________.

    A. continue B. practice C. avoid D. try

【3】What is the application value of the new research?

    A. Perfumes could help people understand each other.

    B. Some smells could be created to improve our appearance.

    C. Perfumes could be produced to cure physical diseases.

    D. Some smells could be developed to better our mood.

【4】We can learn from the last paragraph that .

    A. happiness comes from a scent of sweat

    B. social surroundings can influence our emotions

    C. people need more emotional communication

    D.  positive energy can deepen understanding
