二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、This year's US Independence Day celebrations were extra special due to the arrival of a second, smaller Statue of Liberty from France. This one, nicknamed “Little Sister”, was displayed on Ellis Island — across the water from the original Statue of Liberty, which sits on Liberty Island — from July 1 through 5, 2021. It then was moved to the French Embassy in Washington, DC, where it will remain until 2031.

The 9.3-foot-tall, 1000-pound statue is about one-sixteenth the size of the original Statue of Liberty. It was crafted in 2009 from the 3-D scan of the model of the original, which was created by sculptor Frederic-Auguste Barthold in the late 1 800s. Before being shipped to the US, “Little Sister” spent ten years welcoming visitors in Paris. “This statue symbolizes the virtues of freedom and integration (融合),” the sculptor said. “These two values forever unite France and the United States.”

The original Statue of Liberty was also designed to celebrate France-American friendship. The idea was first proposed in 1865 by French historian Edouard de Laboulaye. However, it was not until 1875 that US President and former Civil War general Ulysses Grant agreed to the monument. The two nations decided that France would pay the cost of building the statue while America would fund the $250,000 pedestal (底座) upon which she would stand. It took Barthold and his team, which included Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, builder of Paris's Eiffel tower, ten years to complete the masterpiece.

Today the magnificent monument is one of New York City's most popular tourist attractions, drawing more than 4 million visitors annually. The arrival of its “Little Sister” is sure to attract more fans in Washington, DC.

  • 22、Some animals enjoy playing just like humans do although researchers used to think that applied mostly to birds and mammals. An animal plays when it does something that doesn’t seem to be constructive to its survival so it’s not about food or shelter, for instance. The behavior is also often done again and again.

However, scientists have now conducted experiments that seems to prove bees play too. As far as the experts know, bees are the only insect to do so.

Researchers from Queen Mary University in London earned out an experiment in which bumble bees were taught to roll little balls with the aim of being rewarded with food. They then discovered the insects kept rolling balls even when they weren’t rewarded. They then did another experiment: a path was built from the beehive to a section containing food. Balls were placed on each side of the path leading to the food. The balls on one side were glued down and couldn’t move and the balls on the other side were free and capable of moving. The bees could stay on the path to get to their food, but they always went to the side of the moveable balls and rolled them along. One bee even rolled the balls 44 times in one day.

Researchers say the experiments may well show insects are more evolved than we think.

【1】Which of the following best describes the animals’ behavior?

    A.Recovered.

    B.Repeated.

    C.Responded.

    D.Recommended.

  • 23、Last spring I talked to a particularly patient and helpful salesman at the local cellphone store about how to access international service, since I was headed to Zurich, Switzerland, in June. He was excited and told me his grandfather came from Basel.

“If I get there,” I promised, “I’ll send you a postcard.”

I’m not sure whether he knew what a postcard was, nor do I remember the last time I sent a postcard. The last one I received, I know, was a lonely one posted by friends visiting Africa a few years ago. They were back a good two months before their card fell into my mailbox, looking as if it might have walked and swum the distance on its own.

Postcards filled my childhood and early adulthood. I sent plenty of them home and to friends on my ravels and collected scores from all comers of the globe. Places I’d been or hadn’t, it didn’t really matter.

But who sends postcards anymore? What do postcards matter when you can see any place with the Internet?

By his expression, I knew my cellphone customer representative wasn’t expecting me to follow through. And I didn’t, the following June, for I failed to find s single postcard of Basel in Zurich. But then I went to Basel in September and I chose and sent two postcards in care of my acquaintance (相识的人) there.

Over the next few months, I wondered if he’d gotten them, but I had no reason to visit the store until today, when I couldn’t manage some of my smartphone’s sound settings. And there he was. He didn’t recognize me at first, but once I realized it was him I asked, “Did you get the postcards from Basel?”

He looked at me with fresh and astonished eyes. “Oh, it’s you! I’ve got them posted in my room. My mom loves them, too. I never thought you were serious.”

That’s one reliable customer-relations bond followed through thanks to two small postcards from a grandfather’s birthplace.

【1】The postcard from Africa was ______.

    A.sent by a stranger

    B.the author’s favorite one

C.in the mail for a long time

D.the first one the author received

【2】What did the author like doing when he was young?

    A.Communicating by postcards.

    B.Selling postcards to people.

    C.Traveling around Europe.

    D.Going for long walks.

【3】How did the salesman react to the author’s offer?

    A.He was worried about it.

B.He was looking forward to it.

    C.He was embarrassed about it.

    D.He didn’t take it seriously.

【4】What can be a suitable tile for the text?

    A.Friends at the store

    B.A lesson from Basel

    C.A story of a salesman’s mother

    D.A reliable relationship from postcards

  • 24、   There’s a lot of anxiety around how young people, particularly teenagers, use the internet but new research by Talk Talk suggests some of these fears may be emphasized too much.

In a recent study, 2,000 young people aged 13-16 year olds and the parents of the same teenagers, were interviewed about their attitudes to technology and loneliness. The teens were mainly optimistic about technology and its uses. Over half (71 percent) said that during times when they felt lonely, tech provided a solution to their loneliness such as enabling them to make new friends, receive support and advice, as well as read positive comments online.

However, social media was regarded as a cause for feeling lonely by 12 percent of teens, who said they felt lonely because they didn’t have many friends on social media.

When it comes to the parents, on the other hand, it demonstrated that there is an education gap between worrying about the internet, and knowing what to do about it.

For instance, 70 percent of parents worry bout their teens using the internet, but 65 percent said they did not limit the hours their teen spends using social media and tech, and 70 percent reported they don’t use parent protection controls and software. Around 37 percent said they feel ill-equipped or unsure about how to manage their teens online.

It seems like when it comes to teens on the internet, the main issue is with the parents not understanding what they’re doing. Research by Oxford University academics found there was little evidence between screen time and mental health in teenagers. The study used a mixture of self-reporting techniques as well as time-use diaries.

The research reflected another study earlier this year by the same academics that found technology use explains at most 40 percent of adolescent wellbeing (幸福安乐).

We’re still learning about how things like social media impact our health and wellbeing, but at least in this instance, it demonstrates that the Generation Z’s digital understanding nature means they may have more of a hold on tech and its effects than their parents do.

If you are a parent and worrying about your child’s screentime use, security company Norton has put together a handy guide on how to manage it, such as setting limits on screen time, and talk about the risks of sharing private information on social media.

1What does the author want to illustrate with the example in Paragraph 5?

A.Parents are concerned about their teens using the Internet.

B.Parents are irresponsible for not controlling their teens’ using the Internet.

C.Parents should have a stronger control over the management of their teens using the internet.

D.Parents lack the strategies of handling their teens using the Internet despite their deep concerns.

2The author refers to another earlier study in order to ________.

A.show that the finding of this earlier study is contrary to that of the recent one

B.prove that at least two studies are needed before drawing a sound conclusion

C.support that technology use doesn’t have so much to do with teens’ wellbeing

D.illustrate that technology use has a significant influence on teens’ wellbeing
