二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Do you like going to a theater to watch live performances? If you do, I’m not alone.

Live performances at theaters interest different groups of people from rich people to office workers. If you go to any theater and look at its audience, you will find it is made up of teenagers, the elderly and anyone in between. One part of it is due to the marketing and the show itself. For example, Hair isn’t going to interest the same audience as My Fair Lady. Another part of it is due to the area in which you live. The Palace Theater in Manchester, for example, interests a more urban (城市的)crowd than the Leddy Center in Epping. All of these people have an interest in the magic of live performances and they go to the theater for different reasons.

There is nothing better than live theatre performances to increase your cultural awareness (意识) When you go to see a live theater performance, no matter whether it is a musical or a play, you are improving your knowledge of the world around you. Some people go to the theater to have fun and escape their troubles; others, particularly rich people, go to the theater to develop their knowledge of the world around them. Both of them are very good reasons for going to see live theater performances. However, personally, I often go to the theater more to have fun than anything else.

Everyone has the right to enjoy any performance, whether it’s a world-famous performance by the New Hampshire Ballet or a second-rate performance by your local community theater. The main thing to remember is whether you are there to heighten your awareness of the culture or to get away from your problems. You should appreciate the performance for what it is, because too many people these days don’t know enough about the arts.

【1】What does the author mean by saying she is not alone?

    A. She no longer feels lonely.

    B. She loves watching popular performances.

    C. She often visits a theater with a friend.

    D. She likes going to the theater.

【2】The example of Hair and My Fair Lady shows that______.

    A. many shows have a lot in common

    B. some shows are better than others

    C. not all shows are attractive to the audience

    D. different shows interest different people

【3】According to the author, going to the theater is helpful because of the following reasons EXCEPT______.

    A. improving the ability to read others’ feelings

    B. being a way of learning something

    C. being a way of entertainment

    D. improving people’s understanding of their own or other cultures

  • 22、Jason, a straight-A student from the University of Pennsylvania, uses the term “pseudo-working” to describe how many of us study. The pseudo-worker looks and feels like someone who is working hard — he or she spends a long time in the library and is not afraid to push on late into the night — but, because of a lack of focus and concentration, he or she’s doesn’t actually accomplish much.

This phenomenon can be seen on most college campuses. For example, at Dartmouth there was a section of the main library that was open twenty-four hours a day, and the students I used to see there late at night crowded in groups, drinking coffee, were definitely pseudo-working. The roommate who flips through her chemistry notes on the couch while watching TV is pseudo-working.

By placing themselves in distracting environments and insisting on working long hours, these students are damaging their brain’s ability to think clearly and efficiently accomplish the task at hand. In the end they get half the results with twice the effort.

The bigger problem here is that most students don’t even realize that they’re pseudo-working. To them pseudo-working is work — it’s how they’ve always done it, and it’s how all of their friends do it. It never crosses their mind that there might be a better way. Straight-A students, on the other hand, know all about pseudo-working. They fear it. It not only wastes time, but it’s also mentally tiring.

In fact, the most important skill in becoming a straight-A student is the ability to get work done quickly and with a minimum of wasted effort. Some cognitive science research concludes that about fifty minutes is the optimal learning period to maximize the material integrated per time unit. So how do these students achieve this goal? To understand their secret to success, consider the following simple formula (公式): work accomplished = time spent × intensity of focus

Pseudo-working features a very low intensity of focus. Therefore, to accomplish something by pseudo-working, you need to spend a lot of time. The straight-A approach on the other hand, increases intensity in order to use less time.

【1】Which of the following phenomenon is pseudo-working?

A.Tom is busy taking notes while attending a lecture.

B.Mike is sitting at a study lounge in preparation for a final exam quietly.

C.Jack spends a long time in the library on his essay while listening to music.

D.Alice and Sara are sitting on the couch reading their favorite books.

【2】Compared with straight-A students, the major problem of most students is that they ______.

A.want to spend more time on study

B.are eager to follow their friends’ way

C.have got used to their study approach

    D.are unaware of their pseudo-working

【3】What does the underlined word “optimal” mean in paragraph 5?

    A.Possible.

    B.Best.

    C.Least.

    D.Accurate.

【4】What does the author want to stress by mentioning the formula?

A.The length of time on study counts.

B.Concentration plays a key role in study.

C.Getting work done quickly means everything.

D.Effective study approach is very important.

  • 23、Wild weather, unexpected coral reefs and dangerous sea creatures… these are the nightmares (噩梦) you can imagine a teenager on a solo voyage (独自旅行) around the world might suffer from. But for Laura Dekker, sailing around the globe seems less a price to be paid than a prize to be treasured.

As the 19-year-old Dutch sailor said in Maidentrip, a documentary released last year about her experience of becoming the youngest person to sail around the world alone in 2012, “I was born on a boat. I lived my first five years at sea. And ever since, all I have wanted is to return to that life.”

With her yacht Guppy, Dekker began her journey at 14 and sailed 50,004 kilometers in 519 days.

The flying fish keeping her company, the dolphins following in her wake and the warm days spent on deck playing the flute as she watched another unforgettable sunset were enough to make others jealous.

But these didn’t always go well. There were terrible moments in which Dekker feared death. On one occasion, a whale almost turned Guppy over. Another time, she battled extreme winds and Guppy surfed down 8-meter-high waves.

Out on the open sea alone, she also got used to living without a fridge, a flushing toilet, and a hot shower.

“As a human being you don’t need much,” she told Stuff.co.nz. They might make life more comfortable, but you really don’t need them to be happy.”

In fact, her outlook on life was shaped by the trip. “I wanted the storms. I wanted the calms. I wanted to feel loneliness,” she told The New York Times. “And now I know all these things. It’s the end of the dream I had as a child, and it’s the beginning of my life as a sailor.”

【1】According to the text, in which year did Dekker begin her journey of 50,004 kilometers at sea?

    A. In 2012 B. In 2010

    C. In 2009 D. In 2011

【2】The method the author uses to develop Paragraph 5 is ________.

    A. offering analyses   B. providing explanations

    C. giving examples D. making comparisons

【3】Which of the following can best describe the girl Laura Dekker? _________.

    A. Modest and optimistic B. Patient and strong

    C. Brave and generous   D. Brave and determined

【4】 How did Laura Dekker think of her life on the sea?

    A. It was so dangerous and almost ruined her.

    B. It made her experience happiness and better understand life.

    C. It is the sailing on the sea that made her well known.

    D. It brought her great happiness and much comfort.
