21、 I am a mother of three children and have recently completed my college degree. The last class I had to take was social study. The last class was asked to go out and smile at three people and document their reactions.
Soon after we were given the project, my husband, my youngest son, and I went out to McDonald’s one cold March morning. We were standing in line, waiting to be served, when all of a sudden everyone around us began to back away. I turned around and found there standing behind me were two poor homeless men with a horrible “dirty body” smell. The short gentleman, close to me, was “smiling”. His beautiful sky-blue eyes were full of light as he searched for acceptance. The second man played with his hands uneasily as he stood behind his friend. The short man just asked for a coffee because that was all they could afford.
I smiled and asked the young lady behind the counter to give me two more breakfast meals on a separate dish.I then walked around the corner to the men’s table. I put the dish on the table and laid my hand on the blue-eyed gentleman’s cold hand. He looked up at me with tears in his eyes and said “Thank you”.
I started to cry as I walked away to join my husband and son. When I sat down, my husband smiled at me and said, “That’s why God gave you to me, Honey. To give me hope.”
On the last evening of class, I turned in “my project” and the instructor read it. Then she looked up at me and said, “Can I share this?” I slowly nodded as she got the attention of the class. She began to read and we all knew that we need to heal people and to be healed.
I graduated with one of the biggest lessons I would ever learn: Unconditional Acceptance. “Love People And Use Things — Not Love Things And Use People.”

22、 Believe it or not, a foodie friend of mine asked me whether I’d seen the TV series Chef’s Table. Of course, I hadn’t because I’m not that into food. But I do get hungry for adventure sometimes, so I decided to watch the show.
This is when I was introduced to the chef Francis Mallmann. He makes choices; he doesn’t plan. When he was young, he looked for instructors and experiences, not books or paths. He honored his roots but enjoyed the world and sought things and places he didn’t know. He doesn’t cling to one lifestyle and he doesn’t bend to expectations.
This made me wonder: Aren’t we supposed to assess risks, have a plan and then make our move? I grew up thinking I had to have a plan and have long-term stability in front of me. When I saw Mallmann doing what makes him happy, everything changed.
I thought to myself, “That’s how we’re supposed to live.” Being true to myself. I have already reconciled (和解) with the shame of being inspired by a TV show. Mallmann is inspired by nature, food and language. Me? My life-changing moment came from watching Netflix with my dollar store reading glasses on. No wonder I felt slightly unfulfilled.
After watching Mallmann, I felt as if I’d stood up from a cozy fireplace and the blanket of my life just fell to the ground.
I submitted my leave of absence application to my employer less than a month later. I’m now full of excitement. I’m leaving my job and a good salary, and I’m going to do things that feed my soul.
Michael Kernis and Brian Goldman, psychologists at Clayton State University in Georgia, studied the benefits of authenticity (真实性) and being true to yourself. Some of the benefits of following your inner voice include enjoying a strong sense of purpose in life, greater confidence, healthier relationships and strong skills to deal with change or difficulty.
So, if you’re out there living an interesting life and you meet Mallmann, throw one of his burnt potatoes at him for me. And then tell him I say thank you. I might soon be hungrier and poorer than I was before, but at least I’ll be staying true to who I am. I have Mallmann to thank for that.
【1】What can we know about Francis Mallmann?
A.He chooses to do things he is sure of.
B.He never changes his lifestyle.
C.He suggests people stick to recipes.
D.He often tries new things.
【2】After watching the TV series, the author ______.
A.stood up from a cozy fireplace
B.became interested in cooking
C.reflected on her own lifestyle

B.To analyze how a challenging life benefits people.

【4】What is the main purpose of this article?
A.To tell readers how to find purpose in life.
B.To introduce Mallmann and his lifestyle.
C.To encourage readers to stay true to themselves.
D.To teach readers to react to changes positively.
23、The elusive profound mystery of happiness could be as simple as remembering the good times and forgetting the regrets, a new university study reported yesterday. For people who look at the past through rose-tinted glasses are happier than those who focus on negative past experience and regrets, according to a new study published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences.
The study is conducive to the explanation of why personality has such a strong influence on a person’s happiness. The findings suggest that people with certain personality traits are happier than others because of the way they think about their past, present and future. The study examined how people’s ratings on the “Big Five” personality traits relate to their approach to time and life satisfaction.
The “Big Five” model assesses how extroverted, open, responsible, agreeable, and neurotic a person is, and rates individuals as high or low on each personality trait rather than assigning them a personality type. “We found that the first four kind of people are happier with their lives because they tend to hold a bright view of the past and are less likely to have negative thoughts and regrets. People high on the neurotic scale essentially have the exact opposite view of the past and are less happier as a result,” said Ryan Howell, assistant professor of psychology at San Francisco State University, who authored the study with SF State College senior Jiawei Zhang. “This is good news because though it may be difficult to change your personality, you may be able to change your view of time and boost your happiness,” Howell said.
The authors suggest that enjoying happy memories or reframing painful past experience in a positive light could be effective ways for individuals to increase their life satisfaction.
“Personality traits influence how people look at the past, present and future and it is these different perspectives on time that drive a person’s happiness,” Howell added.

24、 At first glance, there is nothing unusual about the BingoBox store — shelves stacked with snacks line the walls, tempting passers-by through the glass windows. But on closer inspection, BingoBox is no ordinary store. The door opens only after customers scan a QR code to enter, and there is no cashier to tally up purchases —just a lone checkout counter in a corner. The Shanghai-based company is one of many unmanned store operators opening outlets all over China, hoping to improve slim profit margins in the retail business by reducing staff costs.
“If capital costs rise quickly, that puts greater pressure on low-margin businesses like convenience stores and supermarkets,” said Andrew Song, an analyst at Guotai Junan Securities. “In China, manpower costs have been rising relatively quickly.”
However, the futuristic vision of shopping without a checkout person is still in progress. A reporter who visited a BingoBox store in Shanghai was briefly locked in when he was trying to exit without making a purchase. Although a sign near the exit stated that empty-handed customers can leave by scanning a QR code, no QR code was to be found. Repeated calls to the customer service hotline went unanswered.
Another unmanned operation in China, Take Go, only allows one customer in the shop at a time because of technology limitations in using multiple cameras for scanning customers’ faces.
The idea of unmanned stores first caught the world’s attention when the largest US online retailer announced its cashier-less store, which is only available to employees for now. Since then, some technology companies in China, including the e-commerce firm Alibaba Group, have launched their own versions of unmanned stores.
Embedded with technology such as RFID tags, mobile payment systems and facial recognition systems, such stores collect valuable data that give operators a better idea of consumers’ preference and buying habits, which can then be used to optimize the operation and make more efficient inventory decisions. For BingoBox, lower operating costs also mean it can afford to expand its reach to areas with less foot traffic, according to Chen Zilin, the founder and CEO of BingoBox.
【1】What makes the BingoBox store look like an ordinary convenience store?
A.Shelves stacked with goods. B.A lone checkout counter.
C.Fewer cashiers to tally up purchases. D.Entering by scanning a QR code.
【2】Why are unmanned stores popular with operators?
A.The customers prefer mobile payment systems.
B.The unmanned stores help improve profit with lower labor costs.
C.The employees focus on consumers’ preference and buying habits.
D.The operators care more about operations and inventory decisions.
【3】How many cases can show that the unmanned stores need improving?
A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five.
【4】What can we infer according to Chen Zilin?
A.Nowadays all stores should be equipped with advanced technology.
B.The operation collect data about consumers’ preference and buying habits.
C.BingoBox made wiser decisions based on the data collected in unmanned stores.
D.The operators can open unmanned supermarkets in more remote places with low costs.
