22、Huron, Ohio, was where I’d spent my twenties, working on a steamer out on the Great Lakes. My wife and I started our family there, and later we came back to Huron to retire. Then, during the final stage of construction on our new home, I had difficulty breathing. The doctor determined I needed open-heart surgery. I was admitted to a hospital in Sandusky.
The night before my surgery, I was so worried that I couldn’t sleep. I lay in my hospital bed praying and thinking about the events in my life that had led me to this point. I remembered how I had fallen in love with Huron and its people. I remembered a Christmas many years ago…
The shipping season had been good to me, so that winter I decided to buy some Christmas gifts and help out a family in town. “I know a family that would appreciate a visit from Santa Claus,” the owner of the store said. “A woman with six children just lost her husband.”
The store owner helped me wrap some presents and gave me the family’s address. That evening I delivered the packages. A little girl with brown eyes and the sweetest smile answered the door. “Santa asked me to bring these gifts to you and your family,” I said.
The girl’s eyes lit up even more. “Tell Santa ‘thank you’ from Dorothy,” she said. I never saw her or her family again, but all in town helped give Huron a permanent place in my heart. A heart now needed fixing badly.
A nurse came in to check on me. “Where are you from?” the nurse asked. “I’m from Huron,” I told her proudly.
She smiled. “I grew up there,” she said. “I loved it, even though life wasn’t easy. You see, I lost my father when I was just a child.”
I looked into her brown eyes and knew I’d seen them before. “Do you recall a sailor bringing presents to your door one Christmas?”
She stared. “That was you!”
“Yes, Dorothy,” I said, suddenly confident about my surgery. “That was me.”

23、 Cyclist Alain Such has been dropped from the Ingotel cycling team for two years after a positive drug test at the Institute of Drug Free Sport. "I was flabbergasted, "said Vidier Garcia, from Team Ingotel. "Alain joined our team last month and we had no idea that he was being examined."
It’s a story that has become more and more familiar in recent years. Dr Mohammad Farnood, a leading sports scientist from Cairo, Egypt, said, "It is thought that some athletes will look for other ways to improve their performance in addition to using drugs."
However, it has not always been against the law. In the Olympics in 1994, Thomas Hicks won the marathon after using drugs in the middle of the race. In fact, the first one didn’t make him feel better for long, so he was given another and, as a result, he fell down soon after finishing and knew nothing. Another one may well have killed him.
Things are very different today. Some scientists are considering the possibility of using genetic engineering to further develop athletes’ abilities. "If it works with no risk of discovery, "said Dr Farnood, "then it’s likely to become common practice for athletes."
Researchers are looking at the possibility of identifying "athletic" genes and correcting weak ones. Put into practice, this would make a person healthier and stronger. Once scientists understand what the genes of top athletes look like, it might even become possible to identify "athletic" genes in young people, and then money could be spent on children who have the most promising genes.
"People are beginning to recognize that it can do good to our society, for example in saving lives and in creating better quality food for people," Dr Farnood said. "So, is it fair to use genetic engineering in sport? You could ask if it's fair for some runners to use the latest scientifically developed footwear. The key question is whether it’s available to everyone.’

D.It’s dangerous to use drugs in sport.
24、 To deal with a changing world, we have to change as well. Transforming land into farms removes forests and worsens climate change. But we need to grow more food to support a growing global population. What can we do?
Scientists have discovered that plants grow best under a certain type of light, which can be provided by red and blue LEDs. The combination of these lights at the right level makes a space look pink. Since “pinkhouses” supply their own light, they don't need to have fragile glass walls and ceilings. And they can be set up anywhere, including places that don't get the amount of light greenhouses need.
Since pinkhouses can pack food in huge columns, one of these farms doesn't need a lot of land. Farmers can set up pinkhouses in cities. They completely control temperature and light, which can help some plants grow twice as well in pinkhouses as they do in traditional farming. Pinkhouses can allow for many more harvests per year since farming doesn't have to stop in the winter.
Even though pinkhouses are a great way to grow crops, lighting and heating an indoor space is very expensive. It doesn't make sense to grow foods that take up a lot of space or that we need to grow lots of, like wheat, rice, and corm, in a pinkhouse. We will still need to grow those crops in fields. We can start farming smarter.
Farmers will use satellite imagery to figure out exactly where to plant each crop. Think of a mixture of just the right crops, rather than a rectangle(长方形) of one type of plant.Sensors in the fields will measure the soil's water level, temperature, and chemical content. They will even be able to detect insects and send out notifications to a smartphone app.Irrigation systems will be tied to weather forecasting programs, allowing very precise watering and care, all calculated to get the best plant growth and yield.
【1】From the text, we know that the pinkhouse
A.covers lots of space B.needs enough sunlight

25、A friend of mine met with an accident when driving in darkness. His legs were so _______ that he couldn’t move. What was the worst was that he found himself unable to ask for help — his mobile phone didn’t work as a result of an exhausted (用光的) battery. Nothing could be done but _______ in the cold wilderness. It was eight hours later that day broke, and then the rescue team_______.
It was almost _______ that he could stand the horror in the darkness for so long. Even more surprising was his explanation, “First of all I checked my _______ conditions and found myself not in deadly danger. As there was no _______ to call for help, I leaned back in my seat, trying my best to keep the wound from bleeding. I fell asleep in this way.”
His story put an end to my regret for the failure of an exploration adventure that happened last year. A group of young men _______ to explore a mountain cave and got lost. _______ to find a way out in the dark cave, they were frightened and ran anxiously without a _______ of direction. Finally, they fell dead in fear and exhaustion. According to the ________ people that found them, the place where they got lost was only about 10 meters away from the ________ of the cave. If they stayed on the spot when they lost their way and tried to ________ themselves, they would probably sense a faint light flashing not far away.
Don’t you think that you can compare it with ________ itself? When you meet with difficulties in life, you are lost in darkness. Keep in mind that the situation is unclear yet and you needn’t act ________. It seems to be a negative attitude, ________ a person who can do so must have foresight(先见之明)as well as great courage in the first place.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给的段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Amanda felt as gray as the sky outside when she looked across the table at her little sister. Li sat on her seat, drinking from her cup.
“Mom, why does Li hate me?”
“Honey, she doesn’t hate you. Li is still getting used to you,” Mom said. “It’s only been two weeks.”
“But look,” Amanda took a cookie off her dish and held it out to Li. “Want to eat it?”
As soon as Li saw Amanda reaching over, her eyes widened. Li quickly got down from her seat and raced to her room.
“See?” Amanda said to Mom. “I thought being a big sister would be fun.”
Over a year ago, Amanda’s parents said that they were adopting (收养) a daughter from China, and Amanda had danced with excitement. She’d dreamed of taking her sister to the park, reading books to her, and teaching her to ride a bicycle. That hadn’t happened.
“She runs away whenever I get close,” Amanda said.
Mom took Amanda’s hand. “Think of how frightening it is for her. She’s in a new country with a new family.”
“I just wish I knew how to help her,” Amanda said, thinking of Li’s frightened eyes.
Amanda went into the family room and sat down on the sofa. How could she help Li? She’d sung songs to her, drawn pictures for her, and made funny faces. None of that had worked.
Amanda turned on the TV. She stopped to watch a film about a dog and a cat. The film was in another language. The show looked funny, but she didn’t understand any of it. It made Amanda remember when they were in China. She had gotten frustrated (沮丧的) when people talked in Chinese.
That’s it. Amanda turned off the TV and sped to her room. She found the CDs Aunt Linda gave her last year to help her learn some Chinese.
Amanda tiptoed (踮着脚走) to Li’s room. Looking in, Amanda saw Li curled up (蜷缩) in a ball on her bed. She could hear Li sobbing (啜泣). Amanda knocked on the open door.
Li moved to the back of her bed.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
“Ni hao,” Amanda said, hoping she had pronounced it right.
