21、Working at a bank in New York City in the mid-2010s, Anna Sacks was living the life-just not the life she wanted. Sure, she was happy. But she wanted to do something that felt important.
Some people seeking meaning might read a self-help book or perhaps volunteer a few hours a week. Sacks packed up her life and moved to Connecticut to participate in Adamah, a farming program that focuses on sustainable living and growing sustainable food. When she returned to New York, her life was with a new purpose and a variety of new skills to make her dreams a reality.
“One of the things that really stuck with me from Adamah was how little waste they produced and how they handled the waste they did have, primarily through composting (堆肥),” she says. “And I just thought, ‘Why aren’t we doing that here?’”“The Adamah program opened Sacks’ eyes to the damage consumer culture is doing on a local, national, and global level, and the need to find solutions. So in 2017, she began what she calls “trash walking”.
During tours around her community, Sacks picks through garbage to look for reusable items. Soon, her “trash walking” expanded to include corporate trash along with residential trash. Surprisingly, she discovered a wide range of really great stuff-like clothing, decorations, and food-all of which she documents on TikTok.
Under the name The Trash Walker, Sacks quickly gained popularity for her videos that highlight the problems with consumerism. “The root issue is overproduction, which leads to overconsumption, which leads to a large amount of waste,” she says.
The fact is, companies often choose to trash items rather than give them away to people who might need them. A big reason for this waste is the way our current tax laws are structured, Sacks says. Sellers who destroy goods can claim the cost as a loss on their taxes and be refunded. If they give away goods, they can claim only a small amount as a charitable reduction on their taxes.
Sacks’ main focus is simply getting people to pay attention to how many unnecessary things they buy and then throw away. “Once you become aware of the way you consume, you can see ways you improve,” she says.

22、Insect numbers have quickly declined by half in some parts of the world due to climate change and intensive agriculture, a study has found. The combined influences of global heating and farming are driving a “substantial decline” of insects across the globe, according to UK researchers.
Lead researcher, Dr Charlie Outhwaite of University College of London, said losing insect populations could be harmful not only to the natural environment, but to human health and food security, particularly with losses of pollinators (传粉者). “Our findings highlight the urgency of actions to preserve natural habitats, slow the expansion of high-intensity agriculture, and cut emissions to reduce climate change,” she added.
The rapid decrease of populations of insects around the world has caused widespread concern. However, scientific data gives a mixed picture, with some types of insects showing extreme and sudden declines, while others are staying steady.
In the latest study published in Nature, the researchers pulled together data on the range and number of nearly 20,000 insect species, including bees, ants, butterflies and dragonflies, at about 6,000 different areas. In areas with high-intensity agriculture and on-going warming, insect numbers have quickly declined by 49%, compared with relatively untouched places that have so far avoided the most severe impacts of climate change.
“Careful management of agricultural areas, such as preserving natural habitats near farmland, may help to ensure that vital insects can still thrive (茁壮成长),” said Dr Tim Newbold, another study researcher. “We need to acknowledge how important insects are for the environment as a whole, and for human health and well-being, in order to address the threats we pose to them before many species are lost forever.

23、We need a varied diet, and one way to do this is by eating all the colors of the rainbow. The proof may be in the Mediterranean diet, which contains a lot of fruit, vegetables and healthy fats. “Eating a traditional Mediterranean diet means you consume different nutrients and phytonutrients,” says Francesco Sofi of the University of Florence. Phytonutrients are small chemical compounds produced by plants that help us digest larger nutrients.
Really, he adds, the colors of the Mediterranean diet are no different to other vegetable-based diets. There’re thus other reasons why it is among the healthiest. For example, Mediterranean populations traditionally boil, rather than fry, their vegetables, which preserves nutrients, Sofi says.
The health benefits of a diet rich in fruit and vegetables on our brain and heart are among the most consistent findings within nutrition science, says Deanna Minich of the University of Western States in Portland, Oregon. Plant foods contain thousands of phytonutrients.
According to Tian-shin Yeh of Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, eating a colorful diet can help people avoid possible side effects of eating too much of one food. “Research has found that orange juice can reduce the risk of cognitive decline, but too much intake is associated with type 2 diabetes,” she says.
Minich argues that the rainbow diet isn’t limited to fruit and vegetables, but includes other natural foods, such as herbs, spices, nuts, seeds, and even tea. She also considers white food as part of the rainbow diet, including tofu. Eating various colors could mean we eat more fruit and vegetables overall.
There’re other ways to get a range of nutrients and phytonutrients from your diet, researchers say. One study found that participants who ate bitter and strong tasting vegetables over 12 weeks had lower blood pressure and blood sugar. It’s also important to consider which parts of the plant you’re eating, says Yeh. “The nutritional values for cabbage and turnip aren’t that similar because one is the leaf and the other one is the root part of the plant,” she says.
【1】What else makes the Mediterranean diet healthy besides its rich content?
A.Its easy availability.
B.Its appealing colors.
C.Its ways of cooking.
D.Its easily being absorbed.
【2】What’s a good way to get nutrients and phytonutrients from a diet besides color?
A.Paying attention to taste.
B.Eating all parts of a plant.
C.Eating seasonally and locally.
D.Combining different diets every day.

A.By listing health benefits of the rainbow diet.
B.By providing viewpoints of different experts.
C.By explaining the processes of related studies.
D.By introducing the popularity of the rainbow diet.

24、Do you know of anyone who uses the truth to deceive(欺骗)? When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can give you a false picture.
For example, someone might say, “I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery(彩票). It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!”
This guy is a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought $ 200 worth of tickets, and only one was a winner. He’s really a big loser!
He didn’t say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. That’s called a half-truth. Half truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.
Some politicians often use this trick. Let’s say that during Governor Smith’s last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents says, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state lost one million jobs!” That’s true. However, an honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs.’’
Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It’s against the law to make false statements so they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might say, “Nine out of ten doctors advised their patients to take Yucky Pills to cure toothache.” It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Company.
This kind of deception happens too often. It’s a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.
【1】We may infer that the author believes people should ________.
A. buy lottery tickets if possible
B. make use of half-truths
C. be careful about what they are told
D. not trust the Yucky Company
【2】Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Using half truths is against the law.
B. Technically, half truths are in fact lies.
C. Yucky Pills is a very good medicine for toothache.
D. Governor Smith did a good job during her last term.
【3】Which of the following best expresses the main idea of the passage?
A. He’s really a big loser!
B. Sometimes the truth can lie as well.
C. Advertisers will sometimes use half truths.
D. It’s against the law to make false statements.
