二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Whether we realize it or not, hand gestures are a constant part of our communication. 【1】 They can make people around you feel more comfortable, or even add an air of authority to your words. Since it’s such a common mode of communication, using hand gestures effectively is important.

These gestures are most helpful when one is speaking to someone with no language in common. However, the same gesture can mean something quite different in another culture. While you are visiting a new city or country, it is important to learn what certain gestures mean. 【2】

Here is a very common example. During a visit to Australia, former US President George W. Bush tried to signal a peace sign by waving the two fingers or V-sign at the crowd. 【3】 But he committed a major error. Instead of his palm facing outwards, it faced inwards. 【4】 Therefore, it’s important to understand the meaning of gestures before you communicate with people in different cultures.

【5】 So, if you are a frequent visitor to different countries, improve your communication skills by learning the meaning of certain gestures.

    A.So you don’t offend anyone.

B.You may think of this as a simple gesture.

C.We communicate mainly by spoken language.

D.He received a warm welcome by the Australians.

E.Hand gestures can make people listen to you more attentively.

F.This hand gesture in Australia is a rude expression used to show you’re very angry.

G.Those considered as a good gesture in one country may be regarded as an offensive gesture in some countries.

  • 22、The idea of low material desire, low consumption and refusing to work, marry and havechildren, concluded as a“lying down”lifestyle, recently struck a chord with many young Chinese who are eager to take pause to breathe in this fast-paced and highly-competitive society.

Many millennials(千禧一代)and generation Zs complained to the Global Times that burdens, including work stress, family disputes and financial pressure, have pushed them“against the wall”. They said they hate the“involution(内卷)”, joking that they would rather give up some of what they have than get trapped in an endless competition against peers.

“Instead of always following the’virtues’of struggle, endure and sacrifice to bear thestresses, they prefer a temporary lying down as catharsis(宣泄)and adjustment,”said ascholar. “It is no wonder that some young people, under the growing pressures from child-raising to house costs today, would try to live in a simple way and leave the worries behind.”

Interestingly, the majority of millennials and Gen Zs reached by the Global Times, whoclaim to be big fans of the lying down philosophy, admitted that they only accept a temporarylying down as a short rest. It is true that with the great improvement of living conditions, some Chinese youths have partially lost the spirit of hardship and are not willing to bear toomuch hard work. But in fact, lying down is not entirely comfortable. Young people who liedown always feel guilty about their constant loss of confidence in pursuing the dreams beyondtheir reach.

“Young people on campus have both aspirations and confusion about their future, butmost of us have refused to set ourselves up in chains to waste opportunities and challenges,”apostgraduate student told the Global Times. “It’s no use running away. I have to ‘stand up’and face the reality sooner or later.”

【1】What might have caused the“lying down”lifestyle among the young?

A.Growing pressure from family and social life.

    B.Improvements in living conditions.

    C.Increasing material possessions from families.

D.Temporary adjustment to failure in competitions.

【2】What does the underlined word in Para.2 probably mean?

    A.Discussion.

    B.Argument.

    C.Meeting.

    D.Agreement.

    【3】What’s the scholar’s attitude toward the“lying down”group?

    A.Understanding.

    B.Objective.

    C.Supportive.

    D.Unclear.

【4】What can be inferred about the young generation from the text?

A.They would rather escape than take challenges.

C.They find their dreams far beyond their reach.

D.They never really drop their responsibilities.

  • 23、The Sahara Festival is a celebration of the very recent past. The three-day event is not fixed to the same dates each year, but generally takes place in November or December. It is well attended by tourists, but even better attended by the locals.

During the opening ceremonies, after the official greetings from the government leaders, people who attend the festival begin to march smartly before the viewing stands, and white camels transport their riders across the sands. Horsemen from different nations display their beautiful clothes and their fine horsemanship. One following another, groups of musicians and dancers from all over the Sahara take their turn to show off their wonderful traditional culture. Groups of men in blue and yellow play horns and beat drums as they dance in different designs. On their knees in the sand, a group of women in long dark dresses dance with their hair: their long, dark, shiny hair is thrown back and forth in the wind to the rhythm of their dance.

The local and visiting Italian dogs are anxious to run after hares. The crowd is on its feet for the camel races. Camels and riders run far into the distance, and then return to the finish Line in front of the cheering people.

Towards the evening, there comes the grand finale of the opening day, an extremely exciting horserace. All the riders run very fast on horseback. Some riders hang off the side of their saddles(马鞍). Some even ride upside down—their legs and feet straight up in the air—all at full speed. Others rush down the course together, men arm in arm, on different horses. On and on they went. So fast and so wonderful!

  • 24、   It was once thought that air pollution affected only the areas immediately around large cities with factories and heavy automobile traffic. Today, we know that although these are the areas with the worst air pollution, the problem is actually worldwide. On several occasions over the past decade, a heavy cloud of air pollution has covered the entire eastern half of the United States and led to health warnings even in rural areas away from any major concentration of manufacturing and automobile traffic. In fact, the very climate of the entire earth may be affected by air pollution. Some scientists feel that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the air resulting from the burning of fossil fuels (coal and oil) is creating “a greenhouse effect”, holding in heat reflected from the earth and raising the world’s average temperature. If this view is correct and the world’s temperature is raised only a few degrees, much of the polar ice cap will melt and cities such as New York, Boston, Miami, and New Orleans will be under water.

Another view, less widely held, is that increasing particulate (废气排到空中而形成的微粒、颗粒) matter in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earth’s temperature—a result that would be equally disastrous. A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to a new ice age and would make agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top farming areas. At present we do not know for sure that either of these conditions will happen (though one recent government report prepared by experts in the field concluded that the greenhouse effect is very likely). Perhaps, if we are very lucky, the two tendencies will offset each other and the world’s temperature will stay about the same as it is now.

1As pointed out at the beginning of the passage, people used to think that air pollution ________.

    A. caused widespread damage in the countryside

    B. affected the entire eastern half of the United States

    C. had damaging effects on health

    D. existed merely in urban and industrial areas

2As far as the greenhouse effect is concerned, the author ________.

    A. shares the same view with the scientists

    B. is uncertain of its occurrence

    C. rejects it as being ungrounded

    D. thinks that it will destroy the world soon

3The underlined word “offset” in Para. 2 could best be replaced by “________”.

    A. slip into B. make up for

    C. set up D. catch up with

4It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

    A. lowering the world’s temperature merely a few degrees would lead many major farming areas to disaster

    B. raising the world’s temperature only a few degrees would not do much harm to life on earth

    C. almost no temperature variations have occurred over the past decade

    D. the world’s temperature will remain constant in the years to come
