二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Not long ago, people could only buy organic food in small shops. Today it is common in most major supermarkets. The reason for the increase is that more and more people are demanding food grown without chemicals. Since the 1990s, organic farm production has gone up 20 percent every year. This pattern is expected to continue around the globe.

Australia leads the world in land used for organic agriculture. It has four times as much land devoted to organic farming as all of Asia. However, most of the land is not very fertile, and it only produces a modest amount of food. Argentina is a distant second, followed by Brazil, the United States and China. In Africa, only a very small amount of land is registered for organic farming. That does not mean Africa relies on chemicals. In fact, many farmers do not use chemicals because they cannot afford them. Yet there are no programs for these farmers to prove they do not use chemicals. Without these programs their food can never be approved organic.

India has had the most dramatic recent increase in organic farming. Like many other countries, India sees continual growth in organic food sales around the world. This, of course, leads to growth in profits. Sales of organic food were more than doubled from 2000 to 2005. Like India, many countries are trying to increase commercial organic farming to get a share of the sales. This has led to criticism. Some people believe that organic farming should not just be about making money. They think the goal is to help the environment. Others say organic farming will not continue if it is not profitable. They say that people should be able to make money while providing food that is healthy to mankind.

1What is the passage mainly about?

    A. Countries all want to make money from organic farming.

    B. Organic food has become much more common.

    C. People do not want to eat food with chemicals in it.

    D. Farming organically is growing around the world.

2Why do people want to increase organic farming?

    A. Organic food is good for the Earth and the human beings.

    B. More and more people demand chemicals to grow food.

    C. Profits from organic farming help make approval programs.

    D. There are fewer chemicals available to the human beings.

3From the passage, it can be said that __________.

    A. China and India have the same amount of organic farmland

    B. India uses the least land to farm organically

    C. the US is the fourth largest organic farming country

    D. Brazil uses less land to farm organically than China

4It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

    A. there will be fewer organic farms if demand for organic food goes down

    B. people who eat food with chemicals have shorter lifespan

    C. India will soon become the largest grower of organic food

    D. more countries will farm organically as the environment gets worse

  • 22、If you live near a deep forest, you might have come across some wildlife animals hiding in your backyard, but nothing beats the surprise this woman got when she found three baby deer hiding in her house to wait out the storm.

The woman then posted several photos of the baby deer taking refuge (避难) in one of her rooms on her Imgur account “Amscolie”. She wrote that it was a very stormy day and a rainstorm was coming so she left her back door open just in case some animals wanted to take refuge in her house. In the meantime, she went out in the storm to check whether there were any animals that were stuck in the bad weather, especially a number of deer. However, she could not find any of them so she went back to her home.

Surprisingly, she found that the deer had already made their way inside her house!

Like many other animals, deer too can predict stormy weather and know when it is best to find a shelter from the dangerous weather. As the back door was opened, she did not notice when the deer entered her house. The three lovely baby deer made their way inside but there was no sight of their parents. The woman did try to find if there was any deer nearby her house but to no avail. The woman thought that the baby deer might have lost their parents so she welcomed them with open arms.

“I raise orphaned (孤儿的) wildlife. Recently, the back door was open as a storm was coming. The deer were nowhere to be found. I went inside, only to see them next to an end table in the living room. I told them they could sleep in the house for the night because the weather was going to be terrible,” the woman wrote on Little Things. com.

  • 23、Three teachers were murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School. They tried to save their students from a gunman who they recognized as the son of a kindergarten teacher there. The three heroes who were murdered were Dawn Hochsprung, 47, school psychologist, March Sherlach, 56, and 27-year-old Victoria Soto, a young first grade teacher.

When the gunman Lanza began firing at the school in suburban (郊区的) Newtown, Connecticut, several other teachers were in a meeting with Mrs Hochsprung and Mrs Sherlach. Some teachers dived under tables, but Mrs Hochsprung and Mrs Sherlach never hesitated. They ran into the hallway to pull their students into their office. They bravely faced the danger and were murdered by the gunman.

When the gunman broke into the classroom of Grade One, Miss Soto sacrificed herself to save her students — throwing her body in front of the young children.

A tale of heroism came from an eight-year-old student who said a teacher pulled him from the hallway as bullets rang out. “I saw some of the bullets going down the hall that I was right next to and then a teacher pulled me into her classroom,” the boy told CBS News. His relieved mother agreed, saying that the teacher saved her son’s life.

The New York Times reports that twenty-eight people died in the shooting rampage (暴行), including twenty young children between the ages of five and ten. The gunman, Adam Lanza, took his own life finally.

  • 24、   As I was busy working on my work plan in my bedroom, I could hear my four children playing upstairs. Suddenly, I heard the children running down the stairs and shouting "Freddie, Freddie." I heard the word "window" and rushed outside, heart in mouth. My threeyear old son Freddie was lying on his side on the ground. I cried for my husband Simon to dial 999 and within minutes the air ambulance arrived. They quickly took him in the helicopter (直升机). During the flight, Freddie was looking at me and I remembered thinking was a good sign but then his eyes began to roll. As the doctors tried to stabilize (稳定) him, I couldn't believe what was happening.

When we arrived at the hospital in Portsmouth, there were some doctors and nurses waiting for us and they immediately set to work on Freddie. I was hopelessly wishing everything would be alright, but Freddie had broken his skull in two places and blood clots were forming in his brain. He needed operation, and only a doctor at another hospital in

Bristol could do it. This meant another helicopter ride, but we couldn't go with Freddie because there was no enough space. Simon and I drove the long 130 miles from our home in north Devon in silence. Neither of us dared say what we were thinking, "What if we get there and he's dead" "Is he going to be brain-damaged"

Freddie was just coming out of operation when we arrived. The surgeon said it had gone well. When I finally saw him, I hardly recognize my child-he was covered in tubes (管子) and there were wires coming out of his head.

On the third day, Simon went home to see our three girls and to pick up some clean clothes for us. While he was gone, the pressure in Freddie's brain suddenly increased. He was taken into operation room again and this time I fell apart. Luckily, the operation managed to stabilize Freddie. After almost a week, Freddie was finally woken up. When he opened his eyes, he looked at me. He didn't say anything, but I knew straight away that it was my old Freddie, and that he was going to be alright. Over the next two weeks, his recovery went well. After help with learning to swallow again and encouragement with speaking, he was soon playing with his Gruffalo cards and eating meals by himself.

I still don't know how the accident happened, but we got some idea from our girls. Clearly Freddie and Minnie had been sitting on the window ledge, and Freddie must have opened it to look out and fallen 20 feet onto the ground below.

The guilt (内疚) I feel is awful-for weeks I was full of "if onlys", and we put window locks everywhere. Six months later, although the accident seems a lifetime ago, it has changed me. I feel differently about life now. I've left my job to put my children first. I want to spend every minute with them.

  • 26、Directions:Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible.

    Artists as Scientists and Entrepreneurs

Charles and Ray Eames are among the best-known designers of the 20th century. Together, this husband-and-wife team mastered many art forms including furniture design, architecture, painting, and photography. At heart, they were artists, yet their skills in science and business also enabled them to succeed in the design world.

It is clear that the Eameses had a great deal of artistic talent. In 1946, they produced “the most talked-about chairs of the year,” according to Hose& Garden magazine. In addition, the couple also designed inexpensive, practical houses. All of the Eameses, works represented their central idea about design. They made things that were modern and useful but attractive.

As well as being attractive, their designs also indicate their strong interest in science. The couple worked with top scientists to create products that met their own high technical standards. For instance, they created new manufacturing methods. They connected chair parts with heat and glue, a technique called “electronic bonding.” They also used rubber to join the backs and seats of their chairs to distribute the weight of the user.

They also used successful business practices. From 1943 to 1988, the Eames Office near Los Angeles served as a large workshop. Teams of artists produced furniture, photographs, and paintings for customers. In all of their work, the couple was guided by a strong customer focus. “Early in their careers together, Charles and Ray identified the need for affordable, yet high-quality furniture for the average consumer—furniture that could serve a variety of users, according to the U.S. Library of Congress. Their furniture had strong sales beginning in the mid-20th century and still sells well today.

Charles and Ray Eames were extraordinary artists. They used their science and business talents to help them create beautiful art.
