二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The Supreme Court’s decision on physician-assisted suicide carry important implications for how medicine seeks to relieve dying patients of pain and suffering.

Although it ruled that there is no constitutional right to physician-assisted suicide, the Court in effect supported the medical principle of “double effect”, a centuries-old moral principle holding that an action having two effects — a good one that is intended and a harmful one that is foreseen — is permissible if the actor intends only the good effect.

Doctors have used that principle in recent years to justify using high doses of morphine to control terminally ill patients’ pain, even though increasing dosages will eventually kill the patient.

Nancy Dubler, director of Montefiore Medical Center, contends that the principle will shield doctors who “until now have very, very strongly insisted that they could not give patients sufficient mediation to control their pain if that might hasten death.”

George Annas, chair of the health law department at Boston University, maintains that, as long as a doctor prescribes a drug for a legitimate medical purpose, the doctor has done nothing illegal even if the patient uses the drug to hasten death. “It’s like surgery,” he says. “We don’t call those deaths homicides because the doctors didn’t intend to kill their patients, although they risked their death. If you’re a physician, you can risk your patient’s suicide as long as you don’t intend their suicide.”

On another level, many in the medical community acknowledge that the assisted-suicide debate has been fueled in part by the despair of patients for whom modern medicine has prolonged the physical agony of dying.

Just three weeks before the Court’s ruling on physician-assisted suicide, the National Academy of Science (NAS) released a two-volume report, “Approaching Death: Improving Care at the End of Life”. It identifies the under-treatment of pain and the aggressive use of “ineffectual and forced medical procedures that may prolong and even dishonor the period of dying” as the twin problems of end-of-life care.

The profession is taking steps to require young doctors to train in hospices, to test knowledge of aggressive pain management therapies, and to develop new standards for assessing and treating pain at the end of life.

Annas says lawyers can play a key role in insisting that these well-meaning medical initiatives translate into better care, “Large numbers of physicians seem unconcerned with the pain their patients are needlessly and predictably suffering,” to the extent that it constitutes “systematic patient abuse”. He says medical licensing boards “must make it clear that painful deaths are presumptively ones that are incompetently managed and should result in license suspension”.

【1】From the first three paragraphs, we learn that ________.

A.doctors used to increase drug dosage to control their patients’ pain

B.it is still illegal for doctors to help the dying end their lives

C.the Supreme Court strongly opposes physician-assisted suicide

D.patients have no constitutional right to commit suicide

【2】Which of the following statements is true according to the text?

A.Doctors will be held guilty if they risk their patients’ death.

B.Modern medicine has assisted terminally ill patients in painless recovery.

C.The Court ruled that high-dosage pain-relieving medication can be prescribed.

D.A doctor’s medication is no longer justified by his intentions.

【3】According to the NAS’s report, one of the problems in end-of-life care is ________.

    A.prolonged medical procedures

    B.inadequate treatment of pain

    C.systematic drug abuse

    D.insufficient hospital care

【4】George Annas would probably agree that doctors should be punished if they ________.

    A.manage their patients incompetently

B.give patients more medicine than needed

C.reduce drug dosages for their patients

D.prolong the needless suffering of the patients

  • 22、A lot of people ask this question: "Why is body language so important?" Studies have shown that in the process of communication, non-verbal expression has 65% to 93% more influence than actual text. This means that "how to say" is more important than "what to say". Of course, this does not mean that you don't need to do preparation for your interviews, nor does it mean that you can take any short cuts. On the contrary, this means that you have more things to pay attention to and prepare for.

In the real workplace, body language is much more important than you think. Without proper body language, you may find yourself trapped in a circle where you can't integrate with the external environment, not to mention the difficulties in the absence of body language in the workplace.

"People can often make inferences from actions, and the results of these inferences directly affect lives: for example. who will be employed and who will be promoted."Academician Amy Cuddy said in a TV talk show. She also said that "our body language will also affect our perception ( 感知, 看法)of ourselves. When you try to make more authoritative actions, your brain will inadvertently(不经意地)receive signals and actually create an idea that you are more authoritative, so that you have more confidence in yourself".

Therefore, before interviews or important meetings, try not to lean on any object or have a hunched back. Instead, you should try to keep your body relaxed. You can even stand with a relatively authoritative posture (姿势) -of course, you may need to do these things in the bathroom or places where no one could see you.

Body language plays a crucial role in your job interviews, careers, and everyday life. Paying attention to body language could make strong impacts on your behavior, which could help you achieve better results. So, every time you are nervous or feel that you can't do it, stretch your body, smile, and tell yourself "Fake it till you become it!"

【1】What does Paragraph 1 mainly tell us?

A.What we say in a conversation is not so important.

B.Practicing body language is a short cut to success.

C.We should attach great importance to body language.

D.Body language carries 93% of conversation messages.

【2】According to Amy Cuddy, why is body language important for us?

A.It decides whether we are promoted.

B.It influences people's impression of us.

C.It makes us look more authoritative.

D.It helps people understand who we are.

【3】What does the underlined word "hunched" possibly mean?

    A.Broken down.

    B.Tied behind.

    C.Bent forward.

    D.Straightened up.

【4】Who might be the intended readers of the passage?

    A.New arrivals in the workplace.

    B.Body language researchers.

    C.Working adults to be promoted.

D.Viewers of a TV talk show.

  • 23、Losing weight is a common new year’s resolution. Even when dressed up as a swear to eat more healthily, it can be accompanied with self-disgust. Those pigs in blankets, pies and desserts! With perfect timing, a US group of experts in diet, obesity, heart disease and food psychology has investigated and ranked 40 diets. Its listings, produced annually, show which diets are best for short-term and long-term weight loss, which are the easiest to follow, which are most likely to stick with—and which are unsafe due to lack of enough nutrients. At least anyone who wants to improve their diet has a fantastic resource to turn to.

In the category of best diets overall, the Ketogenic diet, which increases fat intake and reduces carbohydrates and is reportedly followed by Kim Kardashian and Mick Jagger, comes in second to bottom. Experts were concerned at the health risks of such high levels of fat, especially for people with liver or kidney problems.

The winning title is shared between two understated diets—the DASH diet and the Mediterranean diet. While you might be familiar with the latter, the former is less well known but topping the experts’ annual best diets leaderboard for eight years. But both—with some of the other top 10-ranked diets—have evidence that supports their effectiveness: people who follow them lose weight and reduce their risk of high blood pressure and probably other conditions, too.

DASH invented by the US National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute promotes six to eight servings of grains, four to five of vegetables or fruits, six of lean meat (chicken or fish), nuts or seeds, and two to three servings of fats. Each serving is small; for example, 1oz (28gm) of meat or 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil. Studies show that the diet, particularly accompanied by exercise, reduces weight and blood pressure; it is easy to follow and you will feel full on it.

The Mediterranean diet, thought to protect against heart disease, full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, nuts, eggs, and yogurt reasonably, is similar to DASH, but without the specific serving restrictions, itis easy or even joyful to follow. Overall, the best-ranked diets are not too restrictive. So the Flexitarian diet—vegetarianism with the occasional addition of meat—scores more highly than a vegan diet. The WHOLE30 diet is ranked with the raw food diet as the least healthy—both are too restrictive to be the “best diet” for anyone.

【1】Why did the experts do the research?

A.To give suggestions to people who are achieving their new year’s resolution.

B.To tell the best diet and advertise it.

C.To provide enough nutrient to people who want to lose weight.

D.To offer some information to help people improve their diets.

【2】From the passage, we can know that Mediterranean diet _________.

A.helps people reduce their health risks as well as lose weight

B.has been topping the best diet leaderboard for eight years

C.decreases carbohydrates and increases fat intake

D.is ranked as the least healthy

【3】Which of the following diet features eating vegetables and the occasional addition of meat?

    A.The DASH diet.

    B.Flexitarian diet.

    C.The WHOLE30 diet.

    D.The Mediterranean diet.

【4】What can we infer from the passage?

A.The WHOLE30 diet proves to be effective.

B.It is difficult but joyful to follow the Mediterranean diet.

C.The DASH diet is more limiting than the Mediterranean diet.

D.All “best diet” are always very healthy and restrictive.

  • 24、The first time I came to Beijing, I barely spoke a word of Chinese and had no idea about what it would mean to live in a new country.

I went on adventures in supermarkets, thinking: “What is this place, with hundreds of noodle types but only two brands of steak?” I walked around to get a better sense of the city. I would start a morning near Houhai, which was amazing with commercial walkways. From there, I would wander into hutongs, the narrow paths that wind their way from one end of old Beijing to the other. The elderly women, known as damas, sat on chairs outside their doorsteps. Occasionally, a man on a bicycle would pass by. To any newcomer, Beijing seemed like a ever-growing city contrasted with its calm surroundings and a pace of life seemingly unchanged for decades.

However, everything in Beijing has in fact changed. The Olympics started the construction of more subway lines, a new airport, many high-speed railway routes, and many other projects. In the years since, Beijing has continued to transform at an amazing speed. I had no idea that the 2018 Beijing I was seeing was just a snapshot(快照) of the city' s fast-paced turnover.

When I returned three years later for another research project, I found that my picture was entirely outdated, although the relaxed damas still sat on their chairs. Bike-sharing companies had come and gone. The folks who had previously been roasting lamb meat in food stands on the streets were distributing the groceries for an online shopping platform company. The group of old men who swam in Houhai was only half in number.

Some believe that because they have wandered its darkest hutongs and been to its grandest palaces, they have a chance of knowing Beijing, but locals only laugh at the attempt.

【1】How did the author feel about Beijing when he first came?

    A.It brought him much delight.

B.It frustrated him all the time.

    C.It presented a contrasted sight.

D.It was packed with old traditions.

【2】Who might be the author of this passage?

    A.A visiting scholar to Beijing.

B.A student from the rural village.

    C.A central government official.

    D.A businessman working in Beijing.

【3】What do we know about damas?

A.They adjust to the changes rapidly.

B.They have moved to other places.

C.They lead a busier life than before.

    D.They seem unchanged through years.

【4】Why do locals laugh at the attempt to understand Beijing?

    A.Locals will provide varied answers.

B.It will be an effort in vain.

    C.Visitors may easily be confused.

D.Misunderstanding will arise in no time.
