二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   How does keeping things tidy change people psychologically? You gain greater confidence in yourself. Also, you become more optimistic and calmer in the mind than before. There are several reasons for these changes: your self-image improves as you start living in tidy beautiful rooms, and you gain decision-making skills as you continue to choose between which things to throw or give away and which to keep. The way we let go of things in the Kon Mari Method plays an important role as well.

The Kon Mari Method has a step where we give thanks to the things before we throw them away. Not only would you say “thank you for sparking joy in me" to a favorite piece of clothing that you wore till it was threadbare, you would also say to a piece of clothing you never wore once “thank you for teaching me that this color doesn't look good on me". You will appreciate the roles of all the things that have come to you and experience appreciation for all of them. Through this experience, you will rediscover the truth that you have been supported by so many things and you will deepen your gratitude for things you leave behind.

To share a personal example, I have always had little confidence in myself. When I get nervous before a large speaking assignment, I think to myself that I'll be fine because

these clothes are protecting me and these shoes are supporting me, and that calms me down. Once you start feeling constant gratitude for your things and your home through tidying up, you will start feeling relief and calm as if you are always protected by something larger than you.

1What psychological change may tidiness bring to people?

A.They will become more confident. B.Their confidence will become less.

C.They will become less optimistic. D.Their self-image will be damaged.

2What does the underlined word “threadbare" mean in the second paragraph?

    A.fashionable B.fancy

    C.out of date D.worn out

3What should people show to clothes they have never worn in the Kon Mari Method?

    A.Regret. B.Worry.

    C.Gratitude. D.Patience.

4Why does the author mention his own experience in the last paragraph?

A.To show off his wonderful speaking skills.

B.To give an example of the benefit of tidiness.

C.To explain how he has become a confident person.

D.To show his special taste in choosing suitable clothes.

  • 22、Work is a very important part of life in the United States. When the early Protestant immigrants came to this country, they brought the idea that work was the way to God and heaven. This attitude, the Protestant Work Ethic(道德规范), still influences America today. Work is not only important for economic benefits, the salary, but also for social and psychological needs, the feeling of doing something for the good of the society. Americans spend most of their lives working, being productive. For most Americans, their work defines them: they are what they do. What happens then, when a person can no longer work? Almost all Americans stop working at age sixty-five or seventy and retire. Because work is such an important part of life in this culture, retirement can be very difficult. Retirees often feel that they are useless and unproductive. Of course, some people are happy to retire; but leaving ones job, whatever it is, is a difficult change, even for those who look forward to retiring. Many retirees do not know how to use their time or they feel lost without their jobs. Retirements can also bring financial problems. Many people rely on Social Security checks every month. During their working years, employees contribute a certain percentage of their salaries to the government. Each employer also gives a certain percentage to the government. When people retire, they receive this money as income. These checks do not provide enough money to live on, however, because prices are increasing very rapidly. Senior citizens, those over sixty-five, have to have savings in the bank or other retirement plans to make ends meet. The rate of inflation is forcing prices higher each year; Social Security checks alone cannot cover these growing expenses. The government offers some assistance, Medicare(health care)and welfare(general assistance), but many senior citizens have to change their life styles after retirement. They have to spend carefully to be sure that they can afford to buy food, fuel and other necessities.

Of course, many senior citizens are happy with retirement. They have time to spend with their families or enjoy their hobbies. Some continue to work part time, others do volunteer work. Some, like those in the Retired Business Executives Association, even help young people to get started in new business. Many retired citizens also belong to Golden Age groups. These organizations plan trips and social events. There are many chances for retirees.

American society is only beginning to be concerned about the special physical and emotional needs of its senior citizens. The government is taking steps to ease the problem of limited income. They are building new housing, offering discounts in stores and museums and on buses, and providing other services such as free courses, food service, and help with housework. Retired citizens are a rapidly growing percentage of the population. This part of the population is very important and we must meet their needs. After all, every citizen will be a senior citizen some day.

  • 23、Thorny devils, rattlesnakes, kangaroo rats and more have developed smart ways for surviving in water-scarce(缺水的) environments.

    Thorny devils

In Australian deserts live some animals known as thorny devils. These animals specialize in eating ants, which are also where they get their water.

But when ants are scarce, or conditions are even drier than normal, they have a backup. All they have to do is to kick the sand up onto their backs and let the network of tiny canals(沟渠) on their skins to catch small amounts of water and guide the liquid directly to their mouth.

    Namib desert beetles

An ocean away in southwestern Africa, the Namib desert beetles pull off a similar trick. They use their backs as a cooler to catch water trapped in the morning fog. As the droplets grow in size, they run down the insects’ backs toward their mouths.

    Desert rattlesnakes

Desert rattlesnakes of the western US are able to live on just one hearty meal a year. But without a drink of water now and then, the snakes would dry up and breathe their last in a few days.

So how do they survive way up in the Rocky Mountains, where water is scarce? Easy. They turn their bodies into bowls in the evening to collect the dew(露水). With their cold bodies flattened into a bowl, the dew gathers on their skin.

    Kangaroo rats

These pocket-size animals in the US Midwest plains never drink water. They spend 75 percent of their time in underground holes to avoid the heat in the desert. They survive on a diet of dry grass seeds, which they first bury underground. Because the underground soil is wetter than the surface soil, stored seeds may absorb as much as 30 percent more water than ones above ground. So when the rats eat their seeds, they get both food and water.

【1】Where do Namib desert beetles live?

    A.In Australian deserts.

    B.In the US Midwest plains.

    C.In southwestern Africa.

    D.In Canada’s Rocky Mountains.

【2】What is unique about kangaroo rats?

    A.They drink underground water.

B.They bury their backs to get water.

C.They don’t need water to survive.

D.They just use their food to gather water.

【3】Which may have a better chance of surviving in food-scarce environments?

    A.Thorny devils.

    B.Desert rattlesnakes.

    C.Kangaroo rats.

    D.Namib desert beetles.

  • 24、   Dogs can be trained to use their sense of smell to recognize illegal drugs and explosives. So Mark Ruefenacht wondered if the animals could also recognize changes in the blood sugar level of people with diabetes(糖尿病).

Ruefenacht has had the disease for much of his life. In 1999, he almost died while training a young dog to be a guide dog for the blind. Without any warning, his blood sugar suddenly dropped to a dangerously low level. Luckily, his dog stayed with him, and tried to keep him awake. Finally, he was able to get his blood sugar up. This made him wonder if dogs could be trained to identify the chemical changes that happen during an attack, and then inform their owners.

To train the animals, Ruefenacht uses bottles containing swabs of sweat from a diabetic with low blood sugar, and containers of other smells, such as peanut butter, dog food, or plants. The dogs are given a treat when they choose the correct jar.

This “sweat jar” method for training diabetes detection dogs has been approved scientifically.

The next step is to teach the dog to alert the owner. The dogs are trained to use subtle(细微的)signs at first. However, if those signals are ignored, the animals then put their paws on the owner’s legs or shoulders. They learn to lick and put their nose in the owner’s face, and make noises. If none of these methods work, the dogs are then trained to find someone else to help.

Ruefenacht says the dogs can often detect blood sugar dropping long before electronic systems send a warning sound.

His group, Dogs4Diabetics, has placed more than 100 dogs with diabetics. The group hopes to expand the program — training people’s “most loyal friend” to save lives and help diabetics around the world.

1What inspired Ruefenacht to train dogs to detect blood sugar dropping?

    A.His own near-death experience.

B.The success in training guide dogs for the blind.

    C.Dogs’ loyalty to their owners.

D.Dogs’ ability to get blood sugar up.

2To train the dogs, what did Ruefenacht do?

A.He rewarded the dogs if they made the correct choice.

B.He tested the swabs of sweat from a diabetic with low blood sugar.

C.He proved the “sweat jar” method in a scientific way.

D.He first trained the dogs to know about blood sugar.

3What is the last but two paragraph mainly about?

A.The process of training the dogs.

B.The ways for dogs to inform their owners of blood sugar dropping.

C.The methods dogs learn to identify low blood sugar.

    D.The result of the training.

4What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Training dogs to help diabetics has been expanded around the world.

B.Dogs are far more advanced in detecting blood sugar dropping than electronic systems.

C.Dogs do make a big difference in many fields to help human beings.

D.Dogs can detect blood sugar dropping by tasting sweat from a diabetic.
