二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、It’s most people’s nightmare: surviving a plane crash only to be trapped in a jungle with no way of contacting the outside world. But this was reality for four Colombian children, and in an incredible story, they survived.

The children, aged 13, 9 and 4, as well as an 11-month-old baby, were flying with their mother from their village in the Amazon to visit their father in San José del Guaviare. The single-engine plane on which they were flying experienced engine problems and disappeared on May 1, 2023. Bad weather prevented the army from finding the crash site for two weeks. where they then found the dead bodies of three adults, including the children’s mother.

How did these children survive conditions that would be an unimaginable struggle for most adults? They are members of the Huitoto Indigenous group and were raised in the jungle. As such, they have a better understanding of the rainforest. They know which fruits are safe to eat and which plants should be avoided. Working with, rather than against, the Amazon. they survived off of juan soco (a fruit similar to passion fruit) and seeds, while feeding the baby water mixed with yucca flour that they found on the plane.

While the children got on with the business of surviving, the Colombian army worked with Indigenous volunteers to find them. After 40 days of searching, the children were found and taken to recover at a military hospital in Bogota.

While many around the world have taken this survival story of resilience to be a miracle, others point out that it is the result of an ancient knowledge of the rainforest that has been passed down through Indigenous communities over the generations. Indigenous tribes have a close relationship to the Amazon, marked by a deep respect for the forest that provides them with shelter and sustenance. It is their close connection to and understanding of the rainforest that undoubtedly helped the children to survive.

  • 23、A handsome man can earn a fifth more than an average-looking colleague but a beautiful woman is not paid a penny more than her average-looking colleague, new research has shown.

The study by senior economists(经济学家)found that being good-looking meant male workers could earn 22 percent more than average-looking colleagues. Researchers said good looks did not give women a similar advantage.

Andrew Leigh, a former economics professor at the Australian National University who co-authored the report, said: “Beauty can be a double-edged sword for women.”

“Some people still believe good looks and intelligence are incompatible(矛盾的) in women, so a good-looking women can’t be that productive, but it doesn’t affect men’s pay.”

He said that although he believed good-looking women may also earn more, the research did not support his theory.

The research found that handsome men in all jobs, from manual labour(手工劳动)to highly-paid professional careers, can earn 22 percent more than their colleagues doing the same work.

Men with below-average looks face a battle in the office, with ugliness reducing a man’s earnings by 26 percent compared to an average-looking worker.

Former male model, Caitlan Mitchell, 28, who has a first class degree in history from Edinburgh University and now works for a cosmetics company, told the Sunday Times:’ It gives you confidence, and I suspect people tend to warm to you more quickly.”

The study, named Unpacking the Beauty Premium, was the largest exercise of its kind and repeated a survey from 1984 to see if the beauty premium(美貌溢价) had changed.

Leigh said the research showed people in the workplace were “lookist(以貌取人的)”and he hoped the findings would encourage employers to remove their prejudice.

  • 24、A new phone app uses vibrations (振动) from smart phones to alert people about earthquakes.

The phone app recognizes sudden shaking of the earth’s surface through sensors (传感器) in smart phones. The new app is called MyShake. It is the work of four researchers at the University of California, Berkeley. They said they created a worldwide warning system that would inform people and give them time to prepare. The MyShake app is available only for Android phones.

Smart phones are equipped with accelerometers (加速计) . These instruments measure movement, like that of a car or airplane. They can also measure the shaking of a machine, building or other structure. Accelerometers are used in activity trackers and apps that count steps or other exercise. They are also used in global positioning system (GPS) apps.

MyShake uses phone accelerometers to measure seismic (地震引起的) activity. It has been programmed to know the difference between normal activity and earthquake movement. The software developers say their app is right 93 percent of the time. A smart phone sends seismic information to the app developers. If the developers receive information from one area, it recognizes that an earthquake may be taking place or will take place soon. Using information sent from the app, the network then estimates the location and strength of the quake in real time. MyShake can record magnitude (规模) 5. 0 earthquakes at distances of 10 kilometers or less. MyShake uses very little power, according to its developers. Only when seismic activity is sensed by the app does it become active and sends data to the network.

The app works best when your phone is resting on a flat surface, like a table. The app also shows ways to stay safer during an earthquake. The developers say it will become more effective as more people use it.

【1】What can we know about MyShake?

A.It can be applied to all kinds of phones.

B.It serves as a worldwide warning system.

C.It’s the name of a new smart phone.

D.It can prevent and stop the movement of the earth.

    A.Through vibrations from smart phones.

    B.Through information in smart phones.

    C.Through sensors in smart phones.

    D.Through accelerometers in smart phones.

【3】Why are accelerometers used in MyShake?

A.To locate where the user is.

B.To count steps or other exercise.

    C.To measure seismic activity.

D.To measure the shaking of building.
