二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、It is reported that a growing number of species are in an immediate danger of extinction due to human’s activities. Therefore, scientists have successfully used satellite cameras to count animals in various environments, leading to environmentalists an important step forward in watching out populations of endangered species to slow down the process of extinction.

For this research, the satellite WorldView 3 used high-quality pictures to monitor African elephants moving through forests and grasslands. The automated (自动化的) system counted the animals as exactly as humans. The new surveying technique, created by Dr. Olga with some other scientists, allows large areas of land to be checked in minutes, offering a better method for human observers to count every single animal from low-flying airplanes. As it flies across the land, a satellite can collect over 5, 000 km2 every few minutes, avoiding double counting.

The population of African elephants has decreased greatly over the past century, mainly due to hunting illegally and habitat ruin. With only 40, 000-50, 000 elephants left in the wild, the species is classified as endangered.

“Correct monitoring is important if we’re to save the species,” said Dr. Isupova. “We need to know where the animals are and how many there are.” Satellite monitoring avoids disturbing animals during data collection and ensures humans are not hurt in the counting process. It also makes it simpler to count animals moving from country to country, as satellites can move around the planet without caring about border issues.

This study was not the first to use satellite pictures and algorithms (演算法) to monitor species, but it was the first to reliably monitor animals moving through a complex (复杂的) environment — that is, an environment that includes areas of open grassland, woodland and so on. “This type of work has been done before with whales, but of course the ocean is all blue, so counting is a lot less challenging,” said Dr. Isupova. “As you can imagine, a complex environment makes it much harder to identify animals.”

The researchers believe their work shows the benefits of technology to support environmentalists to protect biodiversity and to slow the progress of the mass extinction (灭绝) — the ongoing extinction event caused by human activity.

【1】Why did the scientists create the satellite cameras?

A.To count animals in complex environments correctly.

B.To increase the number of wild animals.

C.To train the skills of observing animals.

D.To drive the elephants out of forests in Africa.

【2】What can we learn about the new surveying technique?

    A.It’s only used on land.

    B.It’s hard to operate.

    C.It is environmentally-friendly.

    D.It works and functions well.

【3】What is the condition of African elephants?

A.They are now in large numbers.

    B.They are in diversity.

    C.They are rapidly reducing.

    D.They are in extinction.

【4】What is the best title for this passage?

A.Making the Satellite WorldView 3 for Biodiversity

B.Using Satellite to Monitor and Preserve Endangered Species

    C.Supporting Hunting with New Technology

D.Introducing Dr. Olga Isupova at the University of Bath

  • 22、The most frightening words in the English language are, “Our computer is down.” You hear it more and more when you are on business. The other day I was at the airport waiting for a ticket to Washington and the girl in the ticket office said, “Im sorry, I cant sell you a ticket. Our computer is down.”

“If your computer is down, just write me out a ticket.”

“I can’t write you out a ticket. The computer is the only one allowed to do so.”

I looked down on the computer and every passenger was just standing there drinking coffee and staring at the black screen. Then I asked her, “What do all your people do?”

“We give the computer the information about your trip, and then it tells us whether you can fly with us or not.”

“So when it goes down, you go down with it.”

    “That’s good, sir.”

“How long will the computer be down?” I wanted to know.

“I have no idea. Sometimes it’s down for 10 minutes, sometimes for two hours. There’s no way we can find out without asking the computer, and since its down it won’t answer us.”

After the girl told me they had no backup(备用) computer, I said. “Let’s forget the computer. What about your planes? Theyre still flying, aren’t they?”

“I couldn’t tell without asking the computer.”

“Maybe I could just go to the gate and ask the pilot if hes flying to Washington, I suggested.

“I wouldn’t know what gate to send you to. Even if the pilot was going to Washington, he couldn’t’t take you if you didn’t’t have a ticket.”

“Is there any other airline flying to Washington within the next few hours?”

“I wouldn’t know,” she said, pointing at the dark screen. “Only ‘IT’ knows. ‘IT’ can’t tell me.

By this time there were quite a few people standing in lines. The word soon spread to other travelers that the computer was down. Some people went white, some people started to cry and still others kicked their luggage.

  • 23、   Everybody has to face bad days in their life. Some face illnesses, some face fears, some face poverty, some face helplessness, etc. No one can escape from it. It is a rule of life. Two things always combines together like joy and sadness, laugh and cry, health and illness, profit and loss, morning and night, confidence and inferiority complex (自卑), victory and failure likewise good days and bad days.

You know what is the biggest advantage of bad days? You come to know GOD. What is God? What he can do? He is so friendly, understanding, loving and moreover God is the Superman who can do anything in a second. Yes, true, he can do anything. He is the only light in darkness. God is so merciful that he always forgives and never complains whether you ignore him many times; that is why, according to me, God is the only best and faithful friend who never cheats.

When bad days come, a person first of all cannot understand what is going on. Why me? But after sometimes he realizes his strength and starts doing every single thing to come out of it. When he comes out, that journey is thought to be very painful. However, when you get through it, you will find your journey very meaningful, and you will feel like it’s your rebirth. You have totally changed your thoughts, your opinions, and you can understand life better. You get the meaning of your life. In short, you start becoming wise.

The biggest lesson of life during bad days for me is that a person becomes spiritual and a giver which he wasn’t before. Life means to create. First think what you want in your life, then start giving the same thing. This is one of the most important things I have learnt in my life. You want love and then start spreading it; you want money and then start giving to needy; you want happiness and then start doing all things which bring happiness. Everything is in your hand and you only need to give first. If don’t have everything, then give or share what you have. Still you feel you have nothing to share, and then give smile. You can’t imagine that your smile can do wonder for someone. So start smiling from today onwards.

The most beautiful lesson I have learnt in my life is that if you are in pain, remember one thing: time is though to be hard but it would be the best time of your life. You know why we have to face hard days? Did you think about it? No! Ok, I will tell you. We always forget two unforgettable things. The first is God and the second is family. Nowadays, money is everything. Money is important, in fact very important but it is not the whole life, so why to spend the whole life in earning money? When will we live? You can’t do it tomorrow, what you can do now? So don’t let the day pass without enjoying it.

One thing I must share with you is that if you want to grow and learn more than you know, then do whatever you want to do but beyond your comfort zone. Always try to think that I can, and then nothing is impossible for you. Difficulty is in the mind but not in work. You know one thing when we accept life as it comes or we accept that everything happens for a reason or for our betterment. Believe me, you will find your hard days as an adventure but you need to trust God and at the end you will find yourself a winner.

I hope you like it. Love you all and God bless you all with healthy wealthy long life and good luck.

A.bad days can destroy all people B.smiling can change your life

A.Lily insists that family is more important than God.

B.Mr. Smith believes that money is the most important of all.

C.Mary gives up her love due to the pressure from her parents.

  • 24、A robot space mission has successfully brought samples of rocks and soil from the Moon back to Earth for the first time since the 1970s. The capsule from China’s Chang’e mission landed in Inner Mongolia in December 2020, carrying with it around two kilograms of Moon material.

The unmanned Chang’e-5 spacecraft was launched in November 2020. After a 250,000-mile journey to the Moon, it entered orbit and released a small landing vehicle that fell towards the surface. Using rockets to slow its speed, the lander made a soft landing on a 1,300-metre volcanic hill called Mons Rumker, in an area called the Ocean of Storms.

The lander used a scoop (铲) and a drill fitted to a robot arm to tunnel two meters into the ground, collecting samples of rock and soil. It then blasted off from the surface, returned to the main spacecraft and automatically transferred its samples, ready for the journey back to Earth.

This is the first time in nearly 45 years that a spacecraft has got Moon rocks back. Most of the Moon material we have on Earth was brought back by astronauts during the US Apollo missions of the late 1960s and early 1970s. A little more came with robot landers from the Soviet Union (a country composed of Russia and its nearby neighbors) around the same time. The new samples are thought to be around 1.3 billion years old and have been taken to China’s capital, Beijing, for study. It’s hoped that they will allow scientists to work out more accurately the age of the Moon and other solar system objects. Xiao Long, an expert in space rocks at China’s University of Geosciences, said that the samples could “rewrite the history of the Moon”.

【1】What landed on the moon and brought the moon rocks back?

    A.A lander.

    B.A rocket.

    C.A spacecraft

    D.A capsule

【2】What does the underlined words “blast off” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Break off.

    B.Take off.

    C.Turn off.

【3】How many times have human beings brought moon rocks back?

    A.Once.

    B.Twice.

    C.Three times.

    D.Four times.

【4】What is the possible function of the new samples of rock and soil?

A.To change the history of the Moon.

B.To find more solar system objects.

C.To work out the age of the Moon more accurately.

D.To make comparison with the previous samples.
