二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   For people, who are interested in sound, the field of sound technology is definitely making noise. In the past, sound engineers worked in the back rooms of recording studios, but many of today's sound professionals are sharing their knowledge and experience with professionals in other fields to create new products based on the phenomenon we call sound.

Sound can be used as a weapon. Imagine that a police officer is chasing a thief. The thief tries to escape. And the officer can't let him get away. He pulls out a special device, points it at the suspect, and switches it on. The thief drops to the ground. This new weapon is called a Long Range Acoustic Device(LRAD, 远程定向声波发射器). It produces a deafening sound so painful that it temporarily disables a person. The noise from the LRAD is directed like a ray of light and travels only into the ears of that person, but it is not deadly.

For those who hunger for some peace and quiet, sound can now create silence. Let's say you are at the airport, and the little boy on the seat next to you is humming(哼唱)a short commercial song. He hums it over and over again, and you are about to go crazy. Thanks to the Silence Machine, a British invention, you can get rid of the sound without upsetting the boy or his parents. One may wonder how the Silence Machine works. Well, it functions by analyzing the waves of the incoming sound and creating a second set of outgoing waves. The two sets of waves cancel each other out. Simply turn the machine or point it at the target, and your peace and quiet comes back.

Directed sound is a new technology that allows companies to use sound in much the same way spotlights(聚光灯)are used in the theater. A spotlight lights up only one section of a stage; similarly, "spotsound" creates a circle of sound in on targeted area. This can be useful for businesses such as restaurants and stores because it offers a new way to attract customers. Restaurants can offer a choice of music along with the various food choices on the menu, allowing customers more control over the atmosphere in which they are dining. Directed sound is also beginning to appear in shopping centers and even at homes.

1What could be inferred from Paragraph 2 about the effect of the LRAD?

    A.It causes temporary hearing loss.

B.It slows down a running man.

C.It makes it easy to identify a suspect.

D.It keeps the suspect from hurting others.

2The Silence Machine is a device specially designed to ________.

    A.silence the people around you

    B.remove the sound of commercials

    C.block the incoming sound waves

D.stop unwanted sound from affecting you

3What feature do spotsounds and spotlights share?

    A.They travel in circles.

    B.They clear the atmosphere.

C.They can be transformed into energy.

D.They can be directed onto a specific area.

4What does the passage focus on?

    A.How professionals invented sound products.

B.Inventions in the field of sound technology.

C.The growing interest in the study of sound.

D.How sound engineers work in their studios.

  • 22、T. O. Fuller State Park in Memphis, Tennessee, has been loved for generations and has always been a ground where community has come first. Back in 1938, it was the first park east of the Mississippi river to open for African American visitors. Over 80 years later, the park is continuing its forward-thinking tradition, this time, through a pioneering sustainability project.

A new walking and biking trail has been built through this historic park. Illegally dumped (被丢弃的) tires are not only unpleasant to see, but they’re a dangerous addition to the environment. Rubber, like plastic, is a material that won’t naturally decompose. In a place as hot as Tennessee, these dumped tires often begin to melt and release these harmful gasses into the air. Fortunately, the old tires were sent to Patriot Tire Recycling in Bristol, TN, the only facility in the area that can break down tires in an environmentally sound way. There, the collected tires were safely broken down into the crumble (碎屑) rubber that was eventually used to pave the new trail.

TN State Parks explained how the trail’s construction, which has been in development since 2019, was a joint effort. Officials from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, the Tennessee Department of Transportation, the City of Memphis, Shelby County, and Memphis City Beautiful were all involved in funding this recycling project.

These officials named their initiative the “Tires to Trails” project. Workers from these departments, alongside some 450 volunteers, came together to collect over 24, 000 tires that had been illegally dumped in the area around the park to be recycled.

“This is a perfect example of recycling in full circle, collecting dumped material, then converting it into positive use,” David, a leader of the project, said in a statement.

【1】What kind of park is T.O. Fuller State Park?

A.It is a popular park with a good tradition.

B.It is the first park welcoming all visitors.

C.It is a park west of the Mississippi river.

D.It is a modern park without biking trails.

【2】Why are dumped tires a dangerous addition to the environment?

    A.They are ugly to see.

    B.They release harmful gasses.

C.They are made up of plastic.

D.They could only be used to pave the new trail.

【3】What does David mean in the last paragraph?

A.It is the park’s responsibility to recycle.

B.The park is built on dumped materials.

C.The park successfully recycled dumped tires.

D.It is possible to turn everything into useful things.

【4】Which of the following is the best title of the text?

    A.Areas of Reusing Tires

    B.Methods of Rebuilding a Trail

C.Tires Transformed into a New Hiking Trail

D.Officials and People Working Together to Recycle Tires

  • 23、Radiocarbon dating has revealed two fake (伪造的) paintings in France — probably the first time the technique has been used in a police investigation. The paintings were supposedly works from around the early twentieth century. But a team led by scientist Lucile Beck at the University of Paris-Saclay dated them to sometime within the past 70 years.

The use of radiocarbon dating is gaining popularity, thanks to advances that require smaller samples than ever before. Removing tinier samples from artwork is becoming more palatable to museums and owners of paintings. If there is a chance that a painting is genuine — and therefore valuable — they don’t want the collection of larger samples to damage it.

All living things take in carbon, including radioactive carbon-14, from the atmosphere and from food. When a plant commonly used to make oil painting cloth dies, the carbon-14 that it contained continues to fall off. Radiocarbon dating measures what’s left to estimate the time that’s passed, says Mariaelena Fedi, a physicist at the National Institute for Nuclear Physics in Florence, Italy.

Atomic-bomb (原子弹) testing, which began in the 1940s and took off in the 1950s, quickly increased the amount of carbon-l4 in the atmosphere.Carbon-l4 peaked around 1964and went down after a partial ban on nuclear tests. Researchers can easily identify materials containing modern bomb-produced radiocarbon because their carbon-14 concentrations are higher than pre-1950s levels. Beck’s team tested its samples to see whether they bore the feature of that bomb-produced radioactive carbon-14.

The canvas fiber from the paintings clearly contained carbon from either the mid-1950sor after the year 2000, the researchers reported. Beck acknowledged that, ideally, the team would do further chemical analysis to support its findings, but the researchers were limited by the tight time.

【1】What does the underlined word “palatable” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Impressive.

    B.Acceptable.

    C.Expensive.

    D.Difficult.

    【2】How does radiocarbon dating work?

    A.By analyzing samples from artwork.

    B.By removing the smaller samples.

    C.By measuring the carbon-14 left.

D.By testing the carbon in the sample.

【3】What can we learn about atomic-bomb testing in Paragraph 4?

    A.It produces more carbon-14.

    B.It helps identify fake paintings.

    C.it reduces carbon concentration.

    D.It has been stopped completely.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A.Paintings waiting to be identified

B.Two fake paintings found in France

C.New technology in painting becomes a hit

D.Radiocarbon dating proves an anti-fake helper

  • 24、   In this age of Internet chat, video games and reality television, there is no shortage of mindless activities to keep a child occupied. Yet, despite the competition, my 8-year-old daughter Rebecca wants to spend her leisure time writing short stories. She wants to enter one of her stories into a writing contesta competition she won last year.

As a writer I know about winning contests, and about losing them. I know what it is like to work hard on a story only to receive a rejection slip from the publisher. I also know the pressures of trying to live up to a reputation created by previous victories. What if she doesnt win the contest again? Thats the strange thing about being a parent. So many of our own past scars and dashed hopes can surface.

A revelation (启示) came last week when I asked her,“Dont you want to win again? No,” she replied, “I just want to tell the story of an angel going to first grade.”

I had just spent weeks correcting her stories as she spontaneously (自发地)told them. Telling myself that I was merely an experienced writer guiding the young writer across the hall, I offered suggestions for characters, conflicts and endings for her tales. The story about a fearful angel starting first grade was quickly guided by me into the tale of a little girl with a wild imagination taking her first music lesson. I had turned her contest into my contest without even realizing it.

Staying back and giving kids space to grow is not as easy as it looks. Because I know very little about farm animals who use tools or angels who go to first gradeI had to accept the fact that I was co-opting (借用)my daughters experience.

While stepping back was difficult for me, it was certainly a good first step that I will quickly follow with more steps, putting myself far enough away to give her room but close enough to help if asked. All the while I will be reminding myself that children need room to experiment, grow and find their own voices.

1What do we learn from the first paragraph?

A.Rebecca is much too busy to enjoy her leisure time.

B.Children do find lots of fun in many mindless activities today.

C.Rebecca benefits a lot from the online materials for her writing.

D.Many senseless activities compete for childrens time nowadays.

2Why did Rebecca want to enter this years writing contest?

A.She simply intended to share her story with readers.

B.She believed she possessed real talent for writing.

C.She was sure of winning with her mothers help.

D.She had won a prize in the previous contest.

3From the underlined part in Paragraph 4, we can infer that the writer ______________.

A.had unconsciously done too much while correcting her daughters story

B.had already offered practical suggestions for her daughters story

C.had nearly replaced her daughter to take part in the contest

D.had successfully turned her daughter into a young writer

4What message is conveyed in the passage?

A.Parents should keep an eye on the activities their children engage in.

B.Children should be allowed more freedom to grow through experience.

C.Children should be given proper guidance to become more excellent.

D.Parents should spare no effort to make their children successful writers.
