  • 21、We know from research that putting pen to paper has many benefits that can support wellness in this time of digital overload. It has been scientifically proven to reduce anxiety, lift your mood and strengthen your immune system. 【1】 Close your laptop, grab a notebook and pen, open to a blank page, and write down whatever comes to mind.

I’ve been journaling for more than 25 years. When I write by hand, I release feelings and emotions that roll down the tip of the pen and onto the page. Turns out that the art of formatting each letter on the page helps you better keep the information you are recording. 【2】

【3】 There’s no need to worry about the device I am working on being charged up, or being distracted away from the very thing I am working on with the endless noise of incoming messages, or getting the required signal from the Internet.

One weekend, I sat for over an hour and hand wrote three birthday cards. I found myself lost in the writing space and totally engaged in the hand-lettering design that I created on the envelopes. 【4】That was a sharp contrast to the concentration of multitasking. Writing by hand builds your creative muscles, which don’t get stimulated in the same impactful way when you work on a keyboard.

The wise words of Nancy Olson show the benefits of writing by hand: “【5】 It transports us to unexpected places, on wings that require only a small amount of ink to keep them high, destination unknown. And in the process, the mindfulness that writing creates encourages calm and creativity.”

A.So why not give writing by hand a try?

B.Perhaps this is the true magic of the pen.

C.It can also help you organize the thoughts.

D.The act of journaling takes many people offline.

E.The power of focus in that moment was charming.

F.Writing spaces, no matter how short, are like a mindfulness.

G.I love the directness of putting pen to paper without being interrupted.

  • 22、Rising temperatures and extreme weather events are making farming conditions increasingly challenging. Thus, scientists in some of the world’s driest places are coming up with solutions to boost local food production. In the Dubai desert, the International Center of Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) has carried out a mission to transplant and grow superfoods that could adapt to and survive in extreme weather conditions.

The work of the ICBA is part of a global effort to find alternative ways to produce food, with the total food demand expected to increase greatly by 2050. But with the effects of climate change already being felt around the world, Joshua Katz, partner at consulting firm McKinsey& Company, believes we need to do more to provide food security in the future.

“Feeding the world, establishing food security, providing nutritious food in a sustainable manner-there’s a lot that we’re asking of the food system,” he says. “In order for us to deliver that to our growing population, with evolving diets and increasing focus on things like health, we’re going to need multiple types of production systems to meet all those different needs or different requirements of the food system.”

With only 11% of the world’s land surface used for crop production, desert agriculture is becoming a real option in extreme environments. Countries like the UAE, which are highly dependent on food imports, are relying on more technologies such as indoor vertical farms and smart greenhouses in the desert to increase local food production.

Joshua Katz sees efforts like ICBA’s as an example of how governments can use technologies to improve local production and prepare for the future. “Countries and businesses will make choices about how they want to incorporate (合并) different growing systems into solving challenges, whether it’s their food security or just providing local food,” he says. “I think we’re going to have a role for almost every different type of cropping system and every different growing technique in different parts of the world.”

    【1】Why are superfoods introduced?

    A.To fight climate change.

B.To make full use of the limited land.

C.To meet the growing demand for food.

D.To adapt to the changing farming conditions.

【2】What can we infer from Joshua Katz’s words in Paragraph 3?

A.Food security is more important than ever before.

B.We need to make more efforts to ensure food supply.

C.There are many problems with the present food system.

D.New food system needs to be built for the growing population.

【3】What is the author’s attitude towards desert agriculture?

    A.Puzzled.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Concerned.

    D.Positive.

【4】Which can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Rising Temperatures: a Threat to Farming

B.Food Production: a Solution to Future Demand

C.Food System: a Challenge for Future Generations

D.Desert Agriculture: a New Way to Improve Local Economy

  • 23、As data and identity theft becomes more and more common, the market is growing for biometric(生物测量) technologies—like fingerprint scans—to keep others out of private e-spaces. At present, these technologies are still expensive, though.

Researchers from Georgia Tech say that they have come up with a low-cost device(装置) that gets around this problem: a smart keyboard. This smart keyboard precisely measures the cadence(节奏) with which one types and the pressure fingers apply to each key. The keyboard could offer a strong layer of security by analyzing things like the force of a user’s typing and the time between key presses. These patterns are unique to each person. Thus, the keyboard can determine people’s identities, and by extension, whether they should be given access to the computer it’s connected to—regardless of whether someone gets the password right.

It also doesn’t require a new type of technology that people aren’t already familiar with. Everybody uses a keyboard and everybody types differently.

In a study describing the technology, the researchers had 100 volunteers type the word “touch” four times using the smart keyboard. Data collected from the device could be used to recognize different participants based on how they typed, with very low error rates. The researchers say that the keyboard should be pretty straightforward to commercialize and is mostly made of inexpensive, plastic-like parts. The team hopes to make it to market in the near future.

【1】Why do the researchers develop the smart keyboard?

    A.To reduce pressure on keys.

    B.To improve accuracy in typing.

    C.To replace the password system.

D.To cut the cost of e-space protection.

【2】What makes the invention of the smart keyboard possible?

A.Computers are much easier to operate.

    B.Fingerprint scanning techniques develop fast.

C.Typing patterns vary from person to person.

    D.Data security measures are guaranteed.

【3】What do the researchers expect of the smart keyboard?

    A.It’ll be environment-friendly.

    B.It’ll reach consumers soon.

    C.It’ll be made of plastics.

    D.It’ll help speed up typing.

【4】Where is this text most likely from?

    A.A diary.

    B.A guidebook

    C.A novel.

    D.A magazine.

  • 24、Jeremy from America cannot understand why a lady he met outside the Hyde Park in London said, “Oh, isn’t it cold?”, and he thinks of this behaviour as a distinctively English concern about the weather. In fact, the female was just trying to strike up a conversation with Jeremy. Not necessarily a long conversation — just an exchange of greetings. It is not always quite that obvious, but all English weather conversations have a distinctive system conducted according to unwritten but accepted rules.

The unpredictable nature of our weather ensures that there is always something new to comment on, or perhaps most importantly, agree about. We have already generally recognized that weather-speak greetings like “Cold, isn’t it?” require the response expressing agreement, as in “Yes, isn’t it?”. It would be very rude to respond with “No, actually it’s quite mild.” or “It’s pretty hot to me.” If you break the rule on purpose, you will find that the atmosphere becomes rather tense and awkward. There may be an uncomfortable silence. Most likely, they will either change the subject or continue talking about the weather among themselves politely, if coldly, ignoring your faux pas.

There is, however, one situation in which English weather-speakers are not required to obey the agreement rule at all and that is the male-bonding argument, particularly the pub-argument. In the special environment of the pub, constant disagreement not just on the weather, but on everything else as well is a means of expressing friendship.

While we may spend much of our time complaining about our weather, foreigners are not allowed to criticize it. Indeed, this brings us to the weather as family rule. In this respect, we treat the English weather like a member of our family: one can complain about the behavior of one’s own children or parents, but any blame from an outsider is unacceptable. The weather may be one of the few things about which the English are still unconsciously and unashamedly patriotic (爱国的).

【1】Why did the lady comment on the weather to Jeremy?

    A.To begin a casual chat.

    B.To build up friendship.

    C.To send seasonal greetings.

    D.To express dissatisfaction.

【2】What does the underlined phrase “faux pas” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Improper response.

    B.Careless attitude.

    C.Rude interruption.

    D.Frequent complaint.

【3】What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A.Male bonding in pubs.

    B.Argument about weather.

    C.Exception to the agreement rule.

    D.Making friends by disagreement.

【4】What is the best title for this text?

    A.Politeness Tips for Foreigners

B.Hidden Rules of English Weather Conversation

C.How to Make a Weather Conversation

    D.Accepted Rules in Social Life
