二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Nearly all of us have a bad habit, whether we know it or not. Some people say they want to get rid of it but don’t know the proper ways. Here’s some advice on how to get rid of bad habits.

    Make a list.

Write down why you want to stop a certain behavior, how it’s hurting you and how to get rid of it. This will help a lot. Look at that list regularly.

    Join in other activities.

It’s wise of you to do something else when you want to stop your bad habits. If you get angry easily, for example, you can practice having a deep breath or going for a walk.

    Give yourself a present.

Before you take action against a bad habit, decide what you’ll do to celebrate it if you reach your goal.

    Keep off bad habits.

If you are fat and want to lose weight, keep junk food out of your house. If you are a heavy smoker with coffee, turn to tea and keep away from friends who like smoking.

    Be patient.

Bad habits develop over years, so you probably won’t be able to get rid of them quickly. In fact, people often give up several times before being successful, so you should be patient.

    Find support.

Don’t be afraid to ask for support from friends, family or other people who have the same bad habits as you. When you talk to others, they might be able to provide advice or encouragement that you usually wouldn’t get from yourself.

【1】If you want to lose weight, you should .

    A.drink more coffee

    B.refuse the junk food

    C.find support from friends

    D.find a heavy smoker

【2】From the passage you can learn .

A.why we have some bad habits

B.how to get rid of bad habits

C.what to do to have a bad habit

    D.where to find some support

  • 22、   People speak English in different parts of the world. The same words can be used in different ways, depending on where you live. People can also have completely different ways of saying the same thing.

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is asking the public to help it add new words. Editors want to find the regional differences in English around the world. They want to expand its record of the language.

Last year, the OED, BBC Radio and the Forward Arts Foundation teamed up to find local words in the United Kingdom. It resulted in more than 100 regional words and phrases being added to the dictionary. One was “cuddy wifter”, which means a left-handed person.

Now, the OED is widening its search to English speakers around the world. Eleanor Maier, an editor at OED, said the response has been great. Editors are listing a bunch of suggestions to include in the dictionary.

These include Hawaii’s “hammajang”, which means “in a disorderly state”. Another is the word for a swimming costume, “dookers” or “duckers”. It is used in Scotland.

The OED also might include the word “frog-drowner”, which Americans might use to describe a downpour of rain. Another possibility is “brick”. It means “very cold” to people in New Jersey and New York City.

The dictionary has already found that, depending on location, a picture hanging off center might be described as “agley”. It might also be called “catawampous” or “ahoo”.

“The OED aims to cover all types of English,” Maier said. That includes scientific words, slang and regional language. Maier also said that it can be difficult for the OED’s editors to identify regional words. The terms are more often spoken than written down.

The appeal is called Words Where You Are. It is looking for more suggestions. “We were surprised and pleased by the number of regional words we were able to include,” said Maier.

1Which local word of the following most likely comes from one region of the United Kingdom?

    A.Hammajang. B.Dookers.

    C.Catawampous. D.Frog-drowner.

2What can be inferred from the passage?

A.It is challenging to create a complete collection of regional words.

B.People are not enthusiastic about the appeal for regional words.

C.Regional words are more used orally than in written form.

D.Understanding regional words can be helpful when communicating.

3Which of the following can best summarize the main idea of the passage?

A.It’s time to track where the local words come from.

B.The same English words can be used to say different things.

C.OED aims to expand its collection to attract locals.

D.OED will include more regional words from around the globe.

4Which part of a newspaper does this passage probably come from?

    A.Entertainment. B.Sports.

    C.Culture. D.Health.

  • 23、Rene Compean was no stranger to Angeles National Forest. He’d hiked the park near his home in Southern California many times. But after adventuring along a new path last April, the 45-year-old mechanic was lost.

He climbed to a spot, some 7, 000 feet above sea level, where he found at least one bar of signal(信号). “SOS. My phone is going to die. I’m lost,” he texted a friend, with a photo showing where he was. The shot showed his dirt-covered legs hanging over a steep waterfall of rocks. All he could do then was wait and hope. The temperature was dropping fast, and the winds were blowing.

Sixty miles away in Ventura County, Ben Kuo was working at home when he read a tweet, showing a grainy image of a man’s legs. The search-and-rescue teams had spent the previous night unsuccessfully looking for Compean, so they posted the photo on social media, hoping someone might know the location.

Kuo, then 47, works in the tech industry, and he has an unusual hobby: “I have always loved looking for where photos are taken,” he says. When he saw the blurry(模糊的) image of Compean’s legs surrounded by an endless landscape of rocks and plants, he immediately pulled up a satellite map on his laptop. “There’s an amazing amount of information you can get from satellites,”says Kuo. The first thing he noticed in Compean’s photo was pieces of greenery. That finding narrowed his search, leading him to cross-referencing the photo with 3-D images of the area from Google Earth. The locations matched! Soon, a search-and-rescue team helicopter was in the air, hovering above Compean.

Days later, the two men met via Zoom, where they made a plan to meet in person. “I owe(欠)you my life.” he told Kuo. Compean’s story probably would have ended very differently if Kuo, a total stranger, had not taken action. In fact, when Compean was finally pulled safely into the helicopter, one of his rescuers, unable to shout over the noise, wrote on a piece of paper, “You are so lucky.”

【1】What can we learn about Compean from the first two paragraphs?

A.He was new to the forest so he got lost.

B.He climbed high to get a phone signal.

C.He tried to clean his legs by a waterfall.

D.He was confident to be saved with his photo.

【2】What is the key factor in Compean’s rescue?

    A.Good luck.

    B.A satellite map.

    C.A rescue helicopter.

    D.Technological skills.

【3】Who do the underlined words “the two men” refer to in the last paragraph?

    A.Compean and Kuo.

    B.Kuoand a stranger.

    C.Compean and his friend.

    D.Compean and a rescuer.

  • 24、As Earth’s climate has been warming, the risk of urban flooding has grown, too. Building ponds to collect rainwater can limit that flooding. But in some places, those ponds may actually add to global warming by releasing greenhouse gases into the air. That’s the finding of a new study.

Earth’s changing water cycle has made many cities and their suburbs wetter. These urban areas have a limited ability to soak up rainwater. Floods hit roads, concrete parking lots, buildings and other features. Ponds can collect the water that runs off. But where nature hasn’t provided enough ponds, cities have been building them. Florida alone has built about 76,000 such stormwater ponds. Many other areas also rely heavily on these ponds for flood control, notes Audrey Goeckner. She’s a graduate student at the University of Florida in Gainesville and lead author of the new study.

Recently, her team compared the uptake and later release of carbon-based gases at five stormwater ponds. All were in Manatee County, Fla. That’s on the state’s central west coast. Along with a lab technician, Goeckner collected samples from the bottoms of the ponds. The samples had a layer of muck (淤泥) above sandy material. Older ponds had deeper layers of muck. Back at the lab, the research team measured the carbon-based compounds in the samples.

In general, older ponds released less of these carbon-based chemicals into the air than younger ponds did. At the same time, “the rate that older ponds were storing carbon in the sediment (沉积物) increased,” Goeckner says. In contrast, younger ponds seem to emit (排放) more carbon than they stored away.

“It’s just really important to take into account how these human-made ecosystems are playing a part in the environment,” she concludes. Some ponds mostly store carbon, it seems. Others mostly release it into the air. Her team shared its findings on March 9 in Communications Earth & Environment.

【1】What is the finding of the new research?

    A.Earth’s climate is warming.

    B.Urban flooding is growing.

C.Ponds built by humans can collect rainwater.

D.Man-made ponds may lead to global warming.

【2】What does the underlined phrase “soak up” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Absorb.

    B.Prevent.

    C.Decrease.

    D.Increase.

【3】What result have the researchers found?

    A.Older ponds store less carbon.

    B.Younger ponds cause less harm.

    C.Older ponds cause less harm.

    D.Younger ponds store more carbon.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Muck and Sediment

    B.Ponds and Water Cycle

    C.Pounds and Climate

    D.Rainwater and Environment
