21、Language is born of culture and in turn reflects (反映) the history of a culture. This is clear when we compare English in Britain, the United States and Australia.
Of the three dialects, British English has the most confusing (令人困惑的) grammar and spelling rules. This is probably because the development of English has been under the control of the upper class. The modern English language came into being in the 18th century. The upper class who spoke French wanted to show their influence and make themselves different from the uneducated working people. In other words, British English reflects the British character with class.
The US dialect is generally recognized as the easiest to understand. Compared with British English, its spelling is more connected with its pronunciation. And its grammatical rules are much easier to follow. What's more, its words are simpler to pronounce. For foreigners, it's much easier to learn. That's why American English is more popular in the world.
The reason why American English is simpler than British English is connected with its special history. British English was mainly influenced by the upper class. But American upper class didn't exist when American English was born. American English was based on the dialects spoken by working people from different countries. So the formation of American English was based on a rule to help all the working people with different cultural backgrounds communicate more easily.
Australian English is different from British and American English. It is the most vulgar (粗俗的) of the three. Actually it has a tendency to show its invention, disrespect and humor. At times, this can make it almost impossible to understand and quite impolite to some educated speakers. That is partly connected with special identity of the early settlers.
【1】Why is British English more confusing than American English?
A.Because it was influenced by the upper class.
B.Because English people are more educated.
C.Because it was totally created by Frenchmen.
D.Because England was more powerful in the past.
【2】American English is more popular than British English worldwide because ________.
A.it has fewer words
B.the US has a shorter history
C.the US has a larger population
D.it is easier to learn for foreigners
【3】What can we infer from the passage?
A.Australian English is easy to understand.

22、 There's an organization in England called Playing Out that is trying to send more children outdoors to play. In an ideal world, a child can step outside and enjoy whatever environment he or she encounters. However, many only encounter car-filled streets. Playing Out wants this to change, and its directors invited environmental writer and activist George Monbiot to have a public conversation about how to cope with such a challenge. What follows are some thoughts on the highlights of the conversation,
First, we mustn't underestimate the positive influence of community on a child's wellbeing. It's an essential human need to feel a sense of belonging in a physical space. Monbiot says he gets this sense from his garden, where being in an outdoor physical location connects him with people from all over the community, who are sharing that space.
The greatest threat to modern children's outdoor play is the presence of cars. Monbiot describes neighborhoods where there's minimal traffic. The lines linking houses are closely connected. Compare that to neighborhoods where busy streets bisect (平分) neighborhoods and there's hardly any interaction between households. The busy traffic literally cuts through the threads, and destroys the society's fabric.
This is unfair because children have the right to use land and space as well. But their opinions are ignored when land is being developed. According to Monbiot, children should be allowed to weigh in on how they want neighborhoods to look. He said, "Children have fantastically creative solutions to problems adults can't solve."
Whether it's streets, parks, rivers, or public squares, children need to get out there and fill those spaces with their games, voices and laughter. Not only will it make them healthier, but it'll teach them to be better citizens, knowing how to interact with others and the natural world.
【1】What does the underlined word "this" in paragraph 1 refer to?
A.Children's unwillingness to play outside.
B.The possible benefit of outdoor activities.
C.Loss of space for children's outdoor play.
D.The challenge of cutting back on vehicles.
【2】How does Monbiot voice his opinion about the power of community?
A.By delivering a public speech online.
B.By describing his personal experience.
C.By explaining the sense of belonging.
D.By giving the result of his research.
【3】How does busy traffic affect children's life according to Monbiot?
A.It reduces their access to green spaces.
B.It exposes them to deadly dangers.
C.It increases their knowledge of traffic safety.
D.It threatens their interpersonal connections.
【4】Which should be Monbiot's opinion according to the text?
A.Children's voices should be heard in community planning.
B.Children should be allowed to encounter challenges.
C.Vehicles are to blame for children's worsening lives.
D.Vehicles should be reduced to improve people's lives.
23、A Few Active Listening Guidelines
Listening is probably the most important element of interpersonal communication. Our
ability to listen affects the quality of all of our relationships, and not just at home with our family and friends――it can also affect our relationships and interactions(交流) on the job, as well as the effectiveness and quality of our work。
Listening is not something that comes naturally or easily for most of us.【1】Active listening means the difference between simply hearing, and listening with the intention to truly understand. It is a subtle but important distinction.
1. Give focused attention
Try to minimize outside disturbance. Tum down the noise, and put down or step away from what you're doing if possible.【2】Don't watch the clock, keep moving your hands or go over your to-do list for later.
2. Keep eye contact
Direct eye contact shows your attention and intention to listen.【3】Be reasonable, but try not to let your eyes wander to whatever is going on around you.
3. Reflect back
Restate, but don t repeat word for word. Paraphrase (解释) what you think the other part Is saying with responses such as: "What I'm hearing is ."or"Let me see if I'm following you……"【4】
4. Respond appropriately.
【5】Share your thoughts, comprehension and fee lings in a clear, but respectful and considerate manner even if you disagree.
Active listening is a model for good communication. Remember that listening is not just to gather information and share ideas, but also to gain viewpoints and understanding. It takes practice to develop active listening skills, and it's a habit that has to be strengthened. Remind yourself that the goal of conversation is not merely to trade words, but to truly understand what the other party is saying and to be understood in turn.
A.Focus on what is being said.
B.This doesn't mean stare, though.
C.Be open and honest in your responses.
D.You do not have to agree on everything.
E.Instead, it is a skill that must be developed and practiced.
F.Also, set aside other thinking and dialogue inside your head.
G.Reflecting what you' re heard signals that you're attempting to understand fully.
