  • 23、When I was young, I wished for a good car and a big house. That was my idea of success. I took all the advanced classes and tried to do well in the exams with my mind set on going to a key school. I just knew that I would somehow become famous and be able to afford the car and the dream house. All the way through junior years, my mind was planning this beautiful future.

Then in the eleventh grade, many losses changed my mind. First, one of my friends died at 16. Soon after, my great-grandmother passed away, followed by my beloved fourth-grade teacher. These events left me not knowing what to do or where to go . Death had never touched me so closely.

After a long period of emptiness (空虚), it finally struck me: Life is not promised and neither is future success. Though I was attempting to achieve material success, I was not enjoying my daily life. I realized that finding inner peace, purpose and happiness will stick with me forever and that is real success.

Enjoying life's precious quirks ( 偶发事件 ) makes an ordinary person more successful than a wealthy person who isn't content and takes everything for granted. The summer before senior years, my attitude changed greatly. Instead of memorizing facts, I began learning skills. Instead of focusing on the future, I focused on today and the many blessings and successes that came with it.

I still get excellent grades, but now I devote weeks to studying instead of struggling for exams, and I think about the future with a deeper sense of meaning. For me, being successful means truly living life each day.

1The reason why the author changed his idea of success is that ________ .

    A. he can't afford his house

    B. his beloved teacher was dead

    C. he didn't know what to do or where to go

    D. he lost a few beloved persons in a short time

2According to the author which of the following is the real success for a person?

    A. Being famous.   B. Truly living life each day.

    C. Good car and big house.   D. Material achievements.

3What does the author want to tell the readers?

    A. The true meaning of the life.   B. The true meaning of studying.

    C. How to achieve success.   D. His opinion about success.

4According to the passage, which of the following is true?

    A. The writer thinks that success is not promised.

    B. His teacher died before the death of his grandpa.

    C. The writer didn't do well in all the exams.

    D. He didn't want to take all the exams.

  • 24、If you see a group of people dancing and singing on the street or in the railway station, you don't need to feel surprised. They are a flash mob(暴民). Who are they? Are they mobs? Don't be confused by their name. Actually, a flash mob is a group of people who gather suddenly in a public place, do something unusual for a brief period of time, and then quickly disappear.

They are usually organized with the help of the Internet or other digital communications networks. The messages may be sent to friends, who send to more people. At a predetermined time, they gather and perform some activities such as exchanging books, coming together to look at the sky, waving their hands and yelling something at the top of their voice for 30 seconds. Then, they quickly disappear before the police can arrive. Using mobile phones, the flash mob can change its place if the first one has been cancelled for any reason.

Bill Wasik, senior editor of Harper's Magazine, organized the first flash mob in Manhattan in May 2003 and the first successful flash mob gathered on June 3, 2003. Wasik claimed that he created the flash mob as a social experiment designed to laugh at fashion seekers and stress the cultural atmosphere of wanting to be an insider or part of “the next big thing”.

Flash mob gatherings can sometimes shock people. Such an activity might seem amusing and magical, but it also might frighten people who are not aware of what is taking place. Undoubtedly, flash mob can serve as good political tools and have great potential, such as using flash mob to advertise a product.

The flash mob is now becoming more and more popular. People use it to do many things. For example, in 2009, Michael Jackson’s fans took part in a flash mob to remember him. Hundreds of his fans gathered singing and dancing Michael’s famous song “Beat It” together. Flash mobs give people from all walks of life an opportunity to come together to create a memory.

【1】What is NOT the feature of the flash mob?

    A. It can get together quickly.

    B. It can change its place freely.

    C. It can do activities suddenly.

    D. It can injure people seriously.

【2】How do flash mobs inform one another?

    ①By using the Internet.

    ②By writing letters.

    ③By yelling.

    ④By waving hands.

    ⑤By using mobile phones.

    ⑥By holding a meeting.

    A. ③④     B. ①⑤     C. ②⑥  D. ⑤⑥

【3】Why did Bill Wasik create the flash mob?

    A. To advertise some products.   B. To help people make friends.

    C. To laugh at fashion seekers. D. To create some memories.

【4】What can we learn about the flash mob from the passage?

    A. Bill Wasik organized the first successful flash mob in May, 2003.

    B. People are encouraged to take a more active part in an activity.

    C. Flash mobs tend to do something illegal for a short time.

    D. Flash mob gathering can frighten all the people present.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两端,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

Being sent to New York to help develop a new project, my parents would be too busy to look after me. So they decided to drive me to the village where my grandpa lived. He had been a teacher in a high school before he retired 3 years ago. I haven’t seen my grandfather for a long time. I could only remember he was a serious, well-dressed and handsome man.

When Mum pulled in the driveway, Grandpa Michael was weeding his garden. He stood up and greeted us with wide-open arms. In his muddy gloves and jeans, he looked nothing like the grandfather I remembered. I wasn’t expecting him to look so different.

After the hugs and kisses, Grandpa couldn’t wait to show off his garden, pointing out his almost-ripe tomatoes and complaining about the rabbits eating his lettuce. The man who had been devoted himself for ages to helping his students improve their grades, form good habits or change their bad behaviour now cared so much about gardening. He used to be a perfect teacher but now he was only a perfect gardener.

Mum returned, leaving only Grandpa and me. I was a little nervous as if we were strangers. My grandpa was a little, too. “Are you hungry? Let’s prepare for our dinner together, OK?” My grandpa turned to me and said proudly, “Now, Adam, you know I am very good at making pasta(意大利面)with delicious sauce. Would you like to try?” I eagerly nodded. “That’s good!” Grandpa said. “We’ll make some.”

We pulled up some vegetables from the garden, and then drove 15 miles to the nearest grocery, where Grandpa bought cheese and nuts. On the drive home Grandpa told me his students all liked the pasta he cooked especially the sauce.

Then Grandpa showed me how to mix eggs with flour to make pasta and then how to prepare the sauce. When everything was ready, he proudly served me a large plate of pasta. I put a forkful into my mouth and it was just terrible.

    Paragraph 1:

“So,” Grandpa said, his eyes shining, “what do you think?”
