二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The classic model of education a burst at the start and company training — is breaking down. One reason is the need for new and constantly updated skill. Manufacturing increasingly calls for brain work rather than manual labor.

Pushing people into ever-higher levels of formal education at the start of their lives is not the way to handle the problem. Just 16% of Americans think that a four-year college degree prepares students very well for a good job. Although a vocational education promises that vital first hire, those with specialized training tend to withdraw from the labor force earlier than those with general education perhaps because they are less adaptable.

At the same time on-the-job training is shrinking. In America and Britain it has fallen by roughly half in the past two decades. Self-employment is spreading, leaving more people to take responsibility for their own skills. Taking time out later in life to pursue a formal qualification is an option, but it costs money and most colleges are meant for youngsters.

The market is innovating to enable workers to learn and earn in new ways. Providers from General Assembly to Pluralsight are building businesses on the promise of improving careers. Massive open online courses (MOOCs) have turned away from lectures on Plato or black holes in favor of courses that make their students more employable. At Udacity and Coursera self-improvers pay for cheap, short programs. By offering degrees online, universities are making it easier for professionals to polish their skills. A single master’s program from Georgia Tech could expand the annual output of computer-science master’s degrees in America by close to 10%.

Lifelong learning starts at school. As a rule, education should not be narrowly vocational. The curriculum needs to teach children how to study and think. A focus on “metacognition” (元认知) will make them better at picking up skills later in life.

1Which is the reason why traditional education is failing?

A.It bursts educators’ bubble in the beginning. B.Companies can’t afford training fees.

C.Old skills can’t meet the present needs. D.It fails to develop one’s brain.

2What can we infer from the text?

A.The more knowledgeable one is, the more likely he is to be employed.

B.Most Americans are poor at their studies in the college.

C.More than 80% of Americans have to be self-employed now.

D.Returning to college after working is not considered worthwhile.

3What does the underlined word “innovating” in Paragraph 4 mean?

A.Reforming its system. B.Declining little by little.

C.Booming all at once. D.Wasting time and energy.

4How do colleges adapt to the present education model?

A.They open online courses. B.They provide easier access to updated skills.

C.They pay for cheap short programs. D.They lower the standard for master’s degree.

  • 22、Batteries can power anything from small sensors to large systems. While scientists are finding ways to make them smaller but even more powerful, problems can arise when these batteries are much larger and heavier than the devices themselves. University of Missouri(MU) researchers are developing a nuclear energy source that is smaller, lighter and more efficient.

“To provide enough power, we need certain methods with high energy density(密度)”,said Jae Kwon, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at MU. “The radioisotope(放射性同位素) battery can provide power density that is much lighter than chemical batteries.”

Kwon and his research team have been working on building a small nuclear battery, presently the size and thickness of a penny, intended to power various micro / nanoelectromechanical systems (M/NEMS). Although nuclear batteries can cause concerns, Kwon said they are safe.

“People hear the word ‘nuclear’ and think of something very dangerous,” he said, “However, nuclear power sources have already been safely powering a variety of devices, such as pace-makers, space satellites and underwater systems.”

His new idea is not only in the battery’s size, but also in its semiconductor(半导体). Kwon’s battery uses a liquid semiconductor rather than a solid semiconductor.

“The key part of using a radioactive battery is that when you harvest the energy, part of the radiation energy can damage the lattice structure(晶体结构) of the solid semiconductor,” Kwon said, “By using a liquid semiconductor, we believe we can minimize that problem.”

Together with J. David Robertson, chemistry professor and associate director of the MU Research Reactor, Kwon is working to build and test the battery. In the future, they hope to increase the battery’s power, shrink its size and try with various other materials. Kwon said that battery could be thinner than the thickness of human hair.

1Which of the following is true of Jae Kwon?

    A. He teaches chemistry at MU.

    B. He developed a chemical battery.

    C. He is working on a nuclear energy source.

    D. He made a breakthrough in computer engineering.

2Jae Kwon gave examples in Paragraph 4_________.

    A. to show chemical batteries are widely applied.

    B. to indicate nuclear batteries can be safely used.

    C. to describe a nuclear-powered system.

    D. to introduce various energy sources.

3Liquid semiconductor is used to _________.

    A. get rid of the radioactive waste   B. test the power of nuclear batteries.

    C. decrease the size of nuclear batteries   D. reduce the damage to lattice structure.

  • 23、Galapagos Giant tortoises (巨型陆龟), sometimes called Gardeners of the Galapagos, are creatures of habit. In the cold dry season, the highlands of the volcanoes are covered in cloud which allows plants to grow despite the absence of rain. In the lower areas, however, plants are not available all year round. Adult tortoises thus spend the dry season in the higher areas, and go back to the lower, relatively warmer areas where there are plentiful eatable plants when the rainy season begins. The tortoises often take the same migration routes over many years in order to find perfect plants and temperatures. The timing of this migration is important for keeping their energy levels high.

Researchers used GPS to track the timing and patterns of tortoise migration over many years. They expected the migration to be timed with current environmental conditions because many other migratory animals do it that way. However, tortoise migration is weakly related to current conditions such as rain and temperature. It is unclear at this point whether they are basing their migration decisions on memories of past conditions or if they are simply incorrectly assessing current local conditions.

Luckily, probably because of their long lives of up to 100 years and large body size, bad timing of migration has smaller effects on giant tortoises compared to small, short-lived animals. Giant tortoises can go up to a year without eating and survive, while other migratory animals might eat more often to keep their energy levels high.

Giant tortoises are important ecosystem engineers in the Galapagos, and their migration is key to the survival of many plants. How the difference in tortoises' migration time will affect the rest of the ecosystem is still unclear. It is quite possible that the mistiming of migration will keep increasing in the future. "One concern is that at some point in the future," says Bastille-Rousseau, lead author of the study, "migration may not be a perfect strategy for tortoises. There may be a reduction in the number of tortoises doing these long travels. This would likely have great effects on the whole ecosystem."

【1】What do we know about Galapagos giant tortoises?

    A.They prefer low temperatures.

B.They like living in the highlands.

C.They always hate the rainy season.

    D.They seldom change migration routes.

【2】What have researchers found out about the timing of giant tortoise migration?

A.The weather has much to do with it.

    B.It disagrees with current conditions.

C.The research has strong effects on it.

D.It is decided by the tortoises' memories.

【3】What might help giant tortoises survive the migration at the wrong time?

    A.Their restless energy.

    B.Their different body shape.

    C.Their habit of eating healthily.

D.Their ability to go without food.

【4】What can we infer from Bastille-Rousseau's words?

A.Migration is the only choice for giant tortoises in the future.

B.Damage to the ecosystem will reduce the number of giant tortoises.

C.Giant tortoise migration plays a major role in Galapagos’ ecosystem.

D.Giant tortoises protect the ecosystem by their different migration time.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要

Change is an unavoidable part of everyday life. It happens as time passes or as a consequence of one's decision. Changes may be positive or negative depending on how we understand them. Whereas some people are happy to live a life of routine, others accept change and prefer a challenging world where events are unpredictable

From one point of view, people who accept changes think that changes make their life meaningful. Firstly, changes create new opportunities, which make us leap forward. A new job, for instance, might present challenges that push the person to adapt, acquire new knowledge, or add to their skill set. Secondly, a change can represent a break with the past and an old routine which has become boring and predictable. Finally, as well as making life more fun and interesting, new experiences can be good for our physical and mental health. We find that changes can make us experienced and valuable

On the other hand, people who don't want to step outside their comfort zone prefer following their daily habits. They feel satisfied with their circumstances. Perhaps they feel that a routine gives them structure, maybe they are not fond of surprises or confident enough to face new challenges. They believe that staying secure and maintaining the present circumstances is the best way to live life safer. Such people have set times for performing certain functions and do things in the same way all the time. They fear the uncertainty of the unknown and may associate change with negative outcomes. For example, transition in position or status gives people worries as to whether they can   manage a new task

Both sides seem to have their own advantages. However, I personally think change is necessary if someone wants to keep up with the fast pace of modem life. Even if some people maintain a form of stability by following a routine, the world keeps spinning and evolving. Without change there would be no life at all. Our lives are actually fueled by change and seeing change as natural and unavoidable will bring us considerable stress relief.
