二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、In the long history of pipe-assisted drinking—beginning with the gold beer-sipping tubes of the Sumerians —Starbucks’s plastic straws(吸管)knew they had some advantages over the rest. Their tight white wrapping carried not only English words but a French style. They stood straight and tall as a stalk (秆)of wheat, with no ugly appearance. And their colour was beautiful. It was darker than the leaves of spring, and lighter than the Washington forests and the logo of the company. But despite all that, they were to disappear by 2020, for not being green enough.

Of course, the straws played an important part in daily life. You could build a cottage with them, or make a hat. At best, they might compose a mat. Their nearest relatives were not delicate grasses, but single-use plastic tubes.

Yet this did not concern them, because they had a higher calling:to refresh human beings.Rather than pumping up the customer with hot highly-effective Americanos, they cooled him with less caffeine and more play. People, especially teenagers and children, needed them to socialize, and amuse themselves. All these folk could have drunk their Frappuccino or their iced teas directly from the plastic cup, of course. Some did, ignoring the eager straws standing ready.

Fun was why green straws had been put into use at all. They began their service not when Starbucks was founded, in 1971, but when it introduced the Frappuccino almost three decades later. Green straws marched in, along with whipped cream. They meant happiness. Yet for each of those straws, the Frappuccino and its followers faced a serious challenging. Through the flat plastic lids of iced coffees, now sharply scored with a cross, they were expected to do the same.

However, the straws were thrown to the bin, either in-store or in the street after being used. They lay where they were thrown in woods, or fields, or among the hills. They would never be dust. They had eternal(永久的)life. That’s the reason why they would disappear.

【1】Why would Starbucks’s plastic straws disappear?

    A.They were not environmentally friendly.

B.They were not widely used in everyday life.

C.They took on an ugly look in appearance.

D.They were uncomfortable for followers to use.

【2】What effect did straws have on people?

    A.Calming.

    B.Uplifting.

    C.Disturbing.

    D.Depressing.

【3】What does the underlined word “Some” refer to in paragraph 3?

    A.Humans.

    B.Straws.

    C.Iced teas.

    D.Plastic tubes.

【4】What is the best title for the passage?

A.Why Are the Green Straws So Popular?

B.Protecting the Environment İs Our Duty

C.Don’t Drink Iced Frappuccino Any More

D.Say Goodbye to Starbucks’s Green Straws

  • 22、   Brave heart is a historical film released in 1995. It was directed by and starred Mel Gibson and was loosely based on the story of 13th-century Scottish leader William Wallace. The movie was a surprise winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture.

After William Wallace’s father and brother are killed in the battle against the English, Wallace is sent to continental Europe to be educated. He returns to Scotland as an adult (played by Gibson) and marries his childhood sweetheart, Murron. When English soldiers try to hurt Murron, Wallace saves her but the soldiers make a second attempt and she is caught and killed. Wallace then leads his family to fight the English troops. He continues to fight to force   the English to leave Scotland, gaining increasing numbers of followers as stories of his brave acts spread.  English King Edward I sends Princess Isabella, his son’s wife, to negotiate with Wallace for peace, but she is charmed by him and becomes his supporter. She warns Wallace of an upcoming attack from the English.

Wallace seeks the support of the Scottish nobles in the fight against the English, but the nobles are hesitating. Robert the Bruce is particularly torn. The Scottish fighters are defeated by an army led by King Edward I in the Battle of Falkirk. Wallace tries to kill Edward I himself but is stopped by a soldier, who proves to be Robert the Bruce. Robert then saves Wallace from being caught by the English. Later Wallace agrees to meet with Robert in Edinburgh, but Robert’s father and other nobles set a trap and catch Wallace. They hand over Wallace to the English. Wallace refuses to give in and before being killed, he courageously cries out, “Freedom!”

The movie was inspired by a lengthy poem about William Wallace by Blind Harry. It led to an increase of interest in Scottish history, although it contained numerous historical inaccuracies.

1What can we know from Paragraph 1?

A.The film is made by a Scottish leader.

B.The film is a true story about Mel Gibson.

C.The film is about a war breaking out in 1995.

D.The film is adapted from a real historical story.

2Which of the following starts Wallace’s fighting against the English?

A.The English troops’ landing in Scotland.

B.His wife’s being killed by the English soldiers.

C.The failure of negotiation with Princess Isabella.

D.His father and brother’s being caught in the battle.

3What happens to Wallace in the end?

A.He becomes the leader of the Scottish nobles.

B.He drives the English out of Scotland.

    C.He dies for Scotland’s independence.

D.He gives in to the English King.

4What is this text mainly about?

    A.A war movie.

    B.A Scottish historical hero.

    C.A famous battle in history.

    D.The independence of Scotland.

  • 23、   Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) has been greatly contributing to the treatment of the COVID-19, which changed the altitude of the western world to it to some extent. However, in the past, foreigners knew little about it. According to a government report, although TCM has been introduced into 183 countries and regions around the world, their understanding of TCM may be limited to acupuncture(针灸), cupping and massage(按摩) .For instance, the purple, injury-like marks left on a U. S. famous swimmers back from cupping to relax his muscles and reduce pain became the center of attention during the Rio Olympics in 2016.

In fact, Chinese herbs(药草) play a more important role in curing diseases and keeping the body in good condition in the TCM treatment system than physical treatment. Therefore, it is disappointing to know that although 103 world Health Organization member countries have given approval to the practice of acupuncture, not many recognize Chinese herbal medicine. TCM is much less popular than Western medicine partly due to the slow development of Chinese herbs.

Herbs can be made into pills, powder and soup. The kind of herbs used, their quality, quantity and the processing together determine the effectiveness of the prescription (处方). Compared with Western medicine, which has standardized drug production processes and treatment methods, TCM lacks standardization. The chemical composition and functions of its medicine are still unclear and their effects are unstable. Fortunately, standardization has improved in recent decades and a number of factories are increasingly producing patented TCM drugs.

Another reason why TCM prescription drugs have developed slowly is that it lacks creativity. While Western medicine-making companies come up with new products every year, TCM drug producers tend to make medicine according to prescriptions handed down from the past. That Chinese chemist Tu Yoyo won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her research into malaria(痢疾) treatment may drive creativity to some extent in China's TCM industry.

However, Rome was not built in a day. The current situation cannot be changed within a short time.

1Why did the US swimmer attract the audience's attention in the 2016 Rio Olympics?

A.The injury on his back. B.The golden cup he won in the games.

C.His relaxed muscles and reduced pain. D.The purple, injury-like marks left on his back.

2What should we do to make TCM be recognized by more countries?

    A.Set standards and improve creativity.

    B.Increase functions and decrease production.

    C.Increase functions and improve creativity.

D.Set standards and create more prescriptions.

3How does the writer feel about the future of TCM?

    A.Anxious. B.Negative.

    C.Disappointed. D.Positive.

    4Westerners DON'T think   .

A.acupuncture treatment is effective B.cupping can cure some diseases

C.massage can relax body muscles D.herbs can keep the body in good condition
