  • 21、Andie Ang's personal interest in monkeys was awakened when she was a child. In 1995. Ang's father saw some sailors mistreating a small young African monkey and brought it home.

Just ten at the time, Ang clearly remembers her excitement on first seeing the golden-furred little monkey. She named him Ah Boy and they soon became close companions. “I would cycle through the neighbourhood and Ah Boy would always follow me,” recalls Ang. “Neighbors would stop to look and comment, ‘Oh, so cute!’”Ah Boy quickly developed a daily routine of climbing onto Ang's shoulders to pull her hair apart in search of anything that shouldn't have been there.

But as the years passed, the family became unable to care for the monkey, so Ang turned to the internet for help. After a complicated and costly process, the day arrived for Ang and Ah Boy to say goodbye. It was a tearful parting for her. Later that day, Ang made up her mind to study monkeys. "The time we spent together made me want to know more about monkeys, the threats to them, and how we can help," she says.

After getting a Life Sciences degree, Ang went on to complete a PhD in Biological Anthropology with a specialty in Raffles' banded langurs (黑脊叶猴), a critically endangered species which hadn't been studied for 15 years.

Today, she spends hours in Singapore's Central Catchment Nature Reserve, where the entire local population of Raffles' banded langurs can be found, doing field research in the forest. Her group has done lots of things to preserve this species, identifying and naming every monkey living in residential areas. They enjoyed discovering their individual personalities. • 22、It was in the Victorian Era(维多利亚时期) that the novel became the leading form of literature in English. Most writers were more concerned to meet the tastes of the middle class. The best known works of the period included the works of Charles Dickens and the Bronté sisters and others.

Charles Dickens came on the literary scene in the 1830s. Dickens wrote vividly about London life and the struggles of the poor. Most of his works were written in a very humorous style, which was popular with readers of all classes.

The Bronté sisters were English writers of the 1840s and 1850s. They began to write from early childhood. In 1846 they published the first book at their own expense as poets; however, their book attracted little attention, selling only two copies. Then the sisters turned to writing novels, each producing a novel in the following year.

An interest in rural matters and the changing social and economic situation of the countryside may be seen in the novels of Thomas Hardy and a number of others.

Literature for children developed as a single style. Some works became well-known, such as those of Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear. Adventure novels were written for adults but are now generally grouped in the list for children. Helen Beatrix Potter was an English author at the end of the Victorian Era, best known for her children's books, which featured animal characters. In her thirties, Potter published the highly successful children's bookThe Tale of Peter Rabbitin 1902.

    D. Their first book was successful.

3The author states in the last paragraph that ________.

  • 23、Buying clothes for a special event, hiding the price tickets and returning them to the store the next day has for years been the method of economical shoppers. Today people are doing it just for social media.

A survey conducted by the credit card company Barclaycard revealed that nearly one in ten UK shoppers admits to buying clothing only to post photos on social media for likes. After the “outfit (装束) of the day” makes it online, they return it to the store. According to Barclaycard, the “try before you buy” policy of online retailers (零售商) where people pay for clothing they order online after they try it on at home could be contributing to this rising trend.

But the rise of social media has meant that everyone, not just superstars, expects to build and maintain a personal brand. Since we’re documenting our lives and posting them online for public judgment, getting caught in the same outfits more than once should be avoided. And the cost of all those outfits of the day adds up, which makes returning a popular way.

There are brands that tailor clothes specifically for social media shoppers, like Fashion Nova. “These are clothes made for social media: meant to be worn once, photographed and abandoned,” Allison P. Davis wrote in her report about the brand. Another favorite of the social media age is Rent the Runway, which lets customers rent designer clothing for a fee.

Some, however, are moving in the opposite direction. Groups promoting “work uniforms” have increased greatly in recent years, aiming to free women from “the annoyance of clothing decisions”. The concept of the “capsule wardrobe” (胶囊衣柜), which calls for purchasing a small number of high-quality pieces instead of lots of trendy throwaway clothes, is also making a comeback.

【1】What does the survey by Barclaycard indicate?

A.Some Britons send outfits back after shoots.

B.Britons try on clothes before online purchases.

C.Britons follow the fashion stars closely.

D.Some Britons over-order and return clothes.

    【2】What’s Fashion Nova’s special service?

    A.Renting chargeable designer clothes.

    B.Offering customers single-use clothes.

    C.Creating unique shopping experiences.

D.Helping shoppers improve their clothing style.

【3】What’s the idea behind the “capsule wardrobe”?

    A.Better fewer, but better.

    B.Less addition, but more enjoyment.

    C.Less uniform and more freedom.

    D.More choices and less annoyance.

【4】What’s the purpose of the author to write the text?

    A.To compare different wearing trends.

B.To criticize the “try before you buy” policy.

    C.To advocate buying high-quality clothes.

D.To introduce Britain’s new wearing trend.

  • 24、Considered one of Europe’s two “bicycle capitals” along with Amsterdam, Copenhagen(哥本哈根) counts more bicycles than people and cycling is so popular that its numerous bike paths can become crowded. Two-wheeler traffic jams are especially regular on the main Noerrebrogade road used by around 36,000 cyclists a day. “You have to elbow your way in to go forward and some cyclists aren’t always thoughtful,” complains 22-year-old university student Lea Bresell.

The creation of bike highways “comes right on time”, says Danish Cyclist Federation Spokesman Frits Bredal. “Copenhagen’s roads are overloaded with people who want to ride their bicycles in all kinds of weather,” he says. “If in the 1960s Danes viewed the car as the symbol of freedom, the bicycles have supposed that role today,” Bredal says. “It’s a mode of transportation used by all social classes, even politicians ride bikes,” he says.

It is on crowded Noerrebrogade—the busiest bicycle street in Europe, according to the cyclist association—that city planners have decided to build the first of Copenhagen’s environmentally friendly roads. The jammed bike paths will be widened up to four metres on either side of the road, which itself will be reserved for bikes only. The idea is to make Noerrebrogade “Europe’s great cycling street”, says Andreas Roehl, Copenhagen government’s bicycle program manager who is also known as “Mr. Bike”.

But Roehl is not content with making life easier for Copenhagen’s inner-city cyclists: He wants to get suburbanites(郊区居民) out of their cars and onto two wheels as well. His goal is to hike the percentage of suburban commuters cycling to and from the city from the 37 percent it is today to 50 percent by 2015.

1Why does Copenhagen plan to build the first bike highway?

    A. Because bike highways are environmentally friendly.

    B. Because it’s a part of the city’s development program.

    C. Because the inner-city commuters urge that it should be built.

    D. Because too many bicycles cause the paths to be crowded.

2Why do people in Copenhagen want to ride their bicycles in all kinds of weather?

    A. Because the price of petrol has been going up all the time.

    B. Because the bicycle is viewed as the symbol of freedom nowadays.

    C. Because it’s hard for people to find parking space in crowded streets.

    D. Because politicians ride bikes and commuters enjoy following them.

3The underline word “mode” in the second paragraph probably means?

    A. fashion   B. improvement

    C. reform   D. law

4Which of the following is NOT included in Andreas Roehl’s plan?

    A. The former jammed bike paths will be widened.

    B. Noerrebrogade is to be made “Europe’s great cycling street”.

    C. All commuters will be pushed to leave their cars at home.

    D. More suburbanites will be got out of their cars and onto two wheels.
