21、Here in Volcano Village, we re excited to be ready for the Experience Volcano Festival at last! First held in 2019, delicious food and live music were among the highlights (最好的部分)of the festival.
This year, we kick off a celebration of the culture, people, and traditions of the Volcano Area with the Ohia Lehua Half Marathon and 5k Run, starting at 7 am on August 14th at the Cooper Center. The Ohia Lehua race, including running through a beautiful Ohia (桃金娘花) forest, was created to be a platform (平台) for spreading awareness about ROD (Rapid Ohia Death) and will continue to educate the community on how to preserve these precious (珍贵的) Ohia trees.
Following the race, head to the Kilauea Lodge for the Opening Oli Hawaiian Chant at 10 am, which will surely leave you inspired to immerse (使沉浸) yourself in Hawaiian culture. The festival offers lots of opportunities to learn everything from traditional poi pounding to the history of the ukulele.
Then head to the Volcano Art Center for a rainforest tour or take a walk through the Secret Garden at the Volcano Garden Arts. After the walk, buy some plants there to bring home to your own garden.
This is just the beginning of all the unique activities that the Experience Volcano Festival features. For those of us who live and work in Volcano, the festival is our chance to share the food, music, art, activities, culture, and nature that make our area such a treasure. And don’t forget the delicious food! Throughout the day, have grindz (delicious eats) at the Ohelo Cafe, Cafe Ono, and Kilauea Lodge, to name a few.
Finish up the day with Happy Hour, Festival Evening Specials, and live music at the Lava Rock Cafe and the Lava Lounge at the Kilauea Military Camp. Almost all of the Experience Volcano Festival events will be free to the public, so save the date and join us in Volcano on August 14th!

Stretching over 21,000 kilometers, the Great Wall was built to prevent invasions and has a history of more than 2,000 years. Home to over 400 types of coral and 1,500 species of fish, the Great Barrier Reef draws visitors to Australia from all over the world.
However, the Great Barrier Reef is expected to suffer increasingly frequent bleaching events, cases in which corals turn white and may die, according to a UNESCO report. The heatwaves caused by global warming have killed half of the coral here in the past two years, according to a CNN report. Pollution from industry development and harmful fishing practices are also big concerns.
The Dead Sea, on the Israel-Jordan border
At 429 meters below sea level, the Dead Sea is 8 times saltier than the ocean, meaning that the water is so dense that even tourists who can’t swim will be able to float.
But the seaside resorts built in the 1980s now sit kilometers away from the edge of the water, which has lost half of its surface area in the past 40 years. The damage is irreversible due to the nature of the mineral industry and the type of the agricultural use that consumes lots of water.
