21、 The Ig Nobel Prize (搞笑诺贝尔奖) hands out awards for “achievements that first make people laugh, then make them think.” Sometimes the world of design can feel the same way: a pen that can detect cancer mid-surgery, for example. But a musical instrument engineered for zero gravity? Perhaps less so. Nevertheless, both are driven by the desire to improve lives.
The pen, musical instrument and more could be found at the Global Grad Show, which has rapidly become a regional networking opportunity with large commercial value, but that hasn’t stopped grassroots innovation from pushing through.
The graduate show, organized by author and designer Brendan MeGetrick, brought together 150 student projects from 100 universities including MIT and Harvard, and countries as diverse as Jordan. Chile and Pakistan. Schools, McGetrick told CNN, are “where one finds design in its purest and most potentially valuable form.”
“Free from the commercial pressures of professional life, the next generation of designers is channeling their craft to improve the world,” he added. “The next generations do not have the luxury to hope that the present issues will be solved. They anticipate the worst and see how they might channel their talents and training to invent tools that we will need before we urgently need them.
This year’s winner of the Global Grad Show, Mirjam de Bruijn said: “I think we should stop thinking that we can do it on our own. I think designers, scientists, technologists and entrepreneurs should start working together. As a designer, I see too many great solutions that are not being used because their design is bad, and I am sure that scientists or technologists think the same with some designs that look better than they actually work.”
【1】A pen and a musical instrument are mentioned to show ________.
A.some designs are ridiculous but meaningful. B.sone achievements are serious but useless.
C.some instruments are supernatural but handy. D.some surgeries are risky bout reasonable.
【2】How will the Global Grad Show benefit the graduates?
A.By leaching skills and knowledge.
B.By offering scientific researches.
C.By providing commercially valuable opportunities.
D.By inspiring the invention ol the urgently needed tools.
【3】According to MeGetrick, the next generation of designers ________.
A.wants to work out the present issues eagerly
B.hates to make their designs on their own
C.feels angry for those solutions not being used
D.tends to find design in its purest form
【4】Which or the following statements might Mirjam de Bruijn agree with?
A.Where there is a will, there is a way. B.Two heads are better than one.
C.Great minds think alike. D.Birds of a feather flock together.
22、Poetry is one of the important art forms of literature, and is an easy way to express your feelings. Moreover, everyone understands it in their own way. Some find relief in poems; some read them simply for peace; some read poems for simple artistic pleasure.
There are some special features of poetry, which make it quite different from other forms of literature. First of all, poems have rhythmic patterns. Generally, most parts of a poem follow the same form of rhythm. Poems may have rhyme, but they don’t have to. The lines are neatly arranged together so that they express a particular feeling or emotion.
There can be various types of poems but according to the pattern or the form, there are mainly three types:
Lyrics: The lyric mainly concentrates on human thoughts and emotions rather than a story. Lyrics always bear song-like appeal. These are mainly short poems. Popular lyric poem forms are the elegy, the ode and the sonnet. William Shakespeare, Edmund Waller and John Keats are some of the greatest lyric writers of all times.
Narrative poems: This type of poetry tells a story. Narrative poems are usually long poems. Epics and ballads fall under this type. Some of the greatest epic poets are John Milton, Dante, Edgar Allan Poe, Alexander Pope, William Shakespeare, etc.
Dramatic poems: Any drama that is written in verse is a dramatic poem. These poems generally tell a story. Black verse, dramatic monologues and closet drama belong to this type. William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe and Ben Jonson are some of the great dramatic poets.
Whatever the form is, one thing, which, cannot be denied, is that poetry is one of the most powerful tools to express our feelings.
【1】What do we know about lyrics?
①They are similar to songs
②They usually tell stories.
③They are not very long.

A.①②③
B.②③④
C.①②④
D.①③④
【2】Which of the following belongs to narrative poetry?
A.The elegy.
B.The dramatic monologue.
C.The epic.
D.The ode.
【3】We can know from the text that _______.
A.poems are weak in showing feelings

C.some poets write more than one type of poem
D.the sonnet and the ballad belong to the same type
【4】This passage is written mainly to ________.
A.tell us some simple facts about poetry

D.make us interested in poems
23、How might you drag a good writer’s work down to a bad one? Try the spell-check button. A study at the University of Pittsburgh indicates spell-check software may shorten the gap between people with different levels of language skills, hampering (妨碍) the work of writers and editors who place too much trust in the software.
In the study, 33 undergraduate students were asked to correct a one-page business letter, half of them using Microsoft Word with red and green lines underlining potential errors. The other half did it the old-fashioned way, using only their heads. Without grammar or spelling software, students with higher SAT verbal scores made, on average, five errors, compared with 12.3 errors for students with lower scores. Using the software, students with higher verbal scores reading the same page made, on average, 16 errors, compared with 17 errors for students with lower scores.
Dennis Galletta, a professor of information systems at the Katz Business School, said spell-checking software is so sophisticated that some have come to trust it too thoroughly. “It’s not a software problem, it’s a person behavior problem,” he said. Microsoft technical specialist Tim Pash said grammar and spelling technology is meant to help writers and editors, not to solve all their problems. The study found the software helped students find and correct errors in the letter, but in some cases they also changed phrases or sentences underlined by the software as grammatically suspicious, even though they were correct.
【1】On whom might spell-check software have a bad influence?
A.Authors who have age gaps.
B.People with lower language levels.
C.Writers having too much faith in it.
D.Editors seldom taking advantage of it.
【2】What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A.Using spell-check software helps reduce the mistakes.
B.Spell-check software causes students to make more mistakes.
C.There is no obvious difference after using spell-check software.
D.Spell-check software has advantages over the old-fashioned way.
【3】What does the underlined word “sophisticated” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Advanced.
B.Complicated.
C.Difficult.
D.Cheap.
【4】What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Spell-check restricts writers’ creativity.
B.Spell-check software can make writing worse.
C.The advantages and disadvantages of softwares.
D.The reasons for people’s abandoning spell-check software.
