二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Parents usually teach their children how to cross the street safely, by looking both ways for cars. But do they also teach them to put away their cellphones? The city of Honolulu, Hawaii wants everyone to learn that lesson.

Texting while crossing the street will soon be banned in the city. Beginning on October 24, you will be fined from $15 to $99 if you step into a Honolulu street while looking at your phone. Honolulu is the first major U.S. city to ban what is called “distracted walking”. It recently passed a law in a seven to two vote. The law says, “No pedestrian shall cross a street or highway while viewing a mobile electronic device.” In other words, do not look at a screen when you cross the street or you could be fined.

The law’s creators hope it will lower the number of people hit and killed by cars in the city. Mayor Kirk Caldwell told the Reuters News agency,“We hold the unfortunate distinction of being a major city with more pedestrians being hit in crosswalks, particularly our seniors, than almost any other city in the country.

The law includes all electronic devices with screens: cellphone, tablets, gaming devices, digital cameras and laptop computers. The law does permit an exception. Pedestrians may use such devices in the street to call emergency services and rescue workers, such as firefighters and police officers.

The Governors Highway Safety Association, or GHSA, says as the use of cell phones rises, pedestrian deaths in the United States increased 25 percent between 2010 and 2015. That trend continued in 2016 with the number of pedestrian deaths rising to almost 6000, 11% higher than in 2015.

Other U.S. cities may follow Honolulu. The state of Washington was the first to outlaw distracted driving back in 2007. Now, 46 other states as well as D. C. , Puerto Rico, Guam and the U. S.Virgin Islands, have laws against texting while driving, reports the GHSA.

If you still want to text while walking, you could avoid being fined in Honolulu by using a voice-controlled digital assistant such as Siri or Google Assistant. Or you could just wait until you are again, safely, off the street.

1What do most parents fail to tell their children when they cross the street?

    A.Not to view cell phones

B.To look to both ways for traffic

C.To go across the street safely

    D.Not to carry cell phones

2By making the law, the creators want to ________.

A.reduce the number of accidents related to pedestrians

B.lower the number of people using mobile electronic devices

C.make city streets and highways safer for drivers

D.increase the use of mobile electronic devices in public places

3A pedestrian can use his cell phone in the streets when_____________

A.he wants to call friends B.his cell phone rings

C.there is an emergency D.no cars can be seen

4What does the fifth paragraph mainly tell us?

    A.Pedestrians deaths have been increasing.

B.More and more people use mobile devices.

C.There are more pedestrians deaths in the US.

D.Ways have been found to deal with car accidents.

  • 22、Bilinguals are smarter, says science. But the idea is relatively new. Up until the 1970s, most educators had believed that learning two languages at the same time would confuse children and slow their cognitive growth.

Science disagreed with these opinions, says Ellen Bialystok, a professor of psychology. The arrival of new technology in the 1970s allowed scientists a new way to investigate how different brains process language.

Bialystok has been researching the bilingual brain for decades. She firmly believes bilinguals aren’t smarter than the single-language learners, but bilingual brains differ in their use of executive function-a system that both helps the brain access particular regions or memories and allows a person to switch between tasks.

Contrary to media reports, executive function is not the same as intelligence, Bialystok adds. Even if the relationship between bilingualism and actual intelligence is unclear, executive function can help people do a lot of things that may make them seem smarter, such as doing more things at the same time and cancelling out things that take their attention away.

Many people believe that knowing at least one other language makes it easier to learn a new one, and cognitive function may play a part in that-the equivalent of good study habits for your brain. But Bialystok thinks cognitive function has less impact on language learners than the similarities between languages’ structure and vocabulary. “In learning those patterns, you can get a bit of a free ride in learning a new language,” she says. Despite the overall cognitive benefits, bilingualism may present some disadvantages. When children learn vocabulary, monolinguals can spend more time remembering words in one language, while bilinguals have to construct two different vocabularies.

“The biggest advantage in being bilingual is the same as having great international friends: It allows a person to understand a different way of thinking, with unique philosophies and assumptions about how others see the world,” Bialystok adds.

【1】What did most educators think of children’s bilingualism before the 1970s?

    A.It surely made kids smarter.

B.It could be a terrible experience.

    C.It should be taught separately.

    A.Executive function.

    B.Cognitive function.

    C.Similar language patterns.

    D.Good study habits.

【3】What is Bialystok’s attitude toward bilingualism?

    A.Skeptical.

    B.Conservative.

    C.Tolerant.

    D.Objective.

【4】Which could be the best title for the text?

    A.Are bilinguals really smarter?

    B.Should kids learn another language?

C.Why do bilinguals have an advantage?

    D.What factors affect language learning?

  • 23、Since the 1990s, scientists have understood that missing sleep can harm someone’s health. Yet a little more than one in every three U.S. adults reported sleeping fewer than the recommended seven hours a night. Weekends may seem like a great time to catch up on sleep. Scientists, however, were not sure that it would work. So Christopher Depner, a sleep physiologist at the University of Colorado and his colleagues decided to test it out.

The team looked at three groups of people in their mid-20s. For roughly two weeks, one group slept about eight hours every night. Another group only got about five hours of shuteye a night. The third group slept some five hours each weeknight, but could sleep whenever and however much they wanted over the weekend.

Participants who got too little sleep every night gained weight. So did the weekend sleep-in crowd. By the end of the experiment, people in both groups had gain an average of 1.5 kilograms. Depner says this could be because losing sleep affects hormones (激素) that control hunger. Since weekend-catch-up sleepers both woke up later and went to bed later, they shifted their body’s internal clocks, as a result of which, they may have gotten hungry later. During the workweeks, both groups ate roughly 400 to 650 calories in late-night snacks.

But the groups were different when it came to insulin (胰岛素) sensitivity — if a person is highly sensitive to this hormone, his metabolism (新陈代谢) is healthy. After a weekend of playing catch up on sleep, those who had slept too little on weeknights showed significant drops in insulin sensitivity in their liver and muscle cells. Neither of the other two groups responded this way.

Peter Liu, a doctor who studied hormones at the University of California, once studied people who reported getting too little sleep. Yet he found that a few extra hours of sleep improved their insulin sensitivity. So the latest study, he cautions, “is not the final word on this important topic.”

【1】Based on what were the participants divided into three groups?

    A.Their living habits.

    B.Their reasons of sleep loss.

    C.Their state of health.

    D.Their sleep schedule.

    【2】What did Depner’s study find?

A.Sleep loss can lead to a low metabolic rate.

B.Sleep time is determined by the body clock.

C.Lack of sleep can make people get fatter than before.

D.Catching up on sleep on the weekend is beneficial for the health.

【3】Who suffer greatly in terms of insulin sensitivity according to Depner’s study?

    A.Those having trouble sleeping.

    B.Weekend-catch-up sleepers.

    C.Those getting too little sleep.

    D.Late-night sleepers.

【4】What is Peter Liu’s attitude to Depner’s study results?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Favorable.

    C.Uncaring.

    D.Supportive.

  • 24、A new large-scale study that skipping dinner could result in weight gain and a higher likelihood of being overweight or obese.

For years, research has linked skipping breakfast with increased BMI (body mass index), but few studies have been carried out into the effect of the other meals of the day. However, researchers at Osaka University, whose study assessed breakfast, lunch, and diner habits, concluded that not eating diner is a “significant predictor of weight gain and overweight/obesity.”

The study followed 17,573 male and 8,860 female students over the age of 18 enrolled at Osaka University over an average of three years. As part of their annual check-ups, the students were asked how often they ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Researchers also took into consideration the time of eating, whether participants’ meal habits changed over the course of the study, and lifestyle factors like sleep, smoking, and drinking.

The number of students who said they sometimes skipped dinner was small, but the researchers found that those who did so all the time or occasionally were more likely to be older, more overweight, a smoker or drinker, to sleep for a shorter period of time, skip other meals more frequently, and eat dinner later when they did eat it.

For both men and women, skipping lunch was more likely to coincide with all the same outcomes except having a higher BMI. Skipping dinner, the researchers found, was”significantly associated” with weight gain of 10% or more, and having a BMI over 25, which is classed as overweight or obese.

It’s worth pointing out that BMI has its limitations — someone who is incredibly muscular and lean can be classed as obese, for example, but when assessing a large population it’s generally considered accurate enough as the outliers outweigh each other, “These results suggest that skipping dinner, which was much less common than skipping breakfast, has a stronger association with weight gain and overweight/obesity than skipping breakfast,” the study said.

The researchers suggested that the reason skipping dinner could lead to weight gain is that it makes people hungrier so they end up eating more over the course of the day. Another possible explanation, they said, is that dinner is typically a meal that lends itself to nutritious foods like lean proteins and vegetables, so skipping dinner may mean a lower quality diet.

The researchers note that their study had limitations: It should be repeated to assess a wider population, and they also didn’t take into account factors like exercise, stress, or depression.

【1】What can be inferred about the research?

A.Many studies have associated skipping dinner with overweight.

B.Dinner is a significant predictor of weight gain and obesity.

C.Anyone with a BMI over 25 is obese.

D.Few students at Osaka University skipped dinner

【2】What do the researchers mean in the last three paragraphs?

A.The result is scientific and accurate.

B.Skipping dinner may lead to overeating.

C.Dinner is more important than breakfast.

D.Nutritious dinner means a lower quality diet.

【3】What is the purpose of the text?

    A.Present a science report.

    B.Advocate a healthy diet.

    C.Recommend approaches to fighting obesity.

D.Stress the importance of nutritious dinner.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.Skipping dinner might be making you gain weight

B.Nutritious dinner means a high quality diet

C.Students skipping dinner tend to develop unhealthy habits

D.People with increased IBM tend to skip dinner
