二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Washington is home to lots of trees—it is the Evergreen State, after all—and lots of fireplaces and wood-burning stoves too. But what if you lived there and couldn’t chop wood or couldn’t afford to pay someone to do it? Luckily, Shane McDaniel and his twin sons, Harrison and Henry McDaniel, 21, are happy to lend an ax. The three men chop truckloads of wood—then donate it to those in need. “I want people who are burning cardboard because they’ve got nothing,” shane explained to heraldnet.com. “Or because they’ve got nothing,” Shane explained to heraldnet.com. “Or someone with no money who has a broken shoulder and can’t cut wood.”

The idea started as a father-son bonding project he told msn.com. “I had to cut wood with my dad. He just loved doing it,” says Shane. He wanted to pass along that feeling, so he and the twins spent the summer of 2018 like a clan of Paul Bunyans. The result was a great wall of wood piled up around their house.

It was too much for the McDaniels to use themselves, and when the weather turned cold that November, Shane started thinking of others. He posted on Facebook: “IF YOU ARE IN NEED OF FIREWOOD AND CANNOT AFFORD IT, PLEASE PM [personal message] ME!... Please help me and my boys make sure NO ONE GOES COLD.”

Single mom Katelyn Ticer, 29, and her four-year-old daughter rely on wood-burning stove as their only source of heat, so it was a relief to receive a truckload of firewood from the McDaniels before the holidays. “To get that much wood brought me to tears,” told msn.com. “So much stress and anxiety is off my shoulders. I couldn’t be more thankful.”

Shane is OK with that. “Giving is the reward,” he says. “It has nothing to do with how well it’s received, it’s about how much it’s needed.”

【1】Why did Shane want to help others?

    A.He was a rich man.

    B.He liked chopping wood.

C.He didn’t need so much wood.

D.He was willing to carry out his family’s tradition.

【2】How did others know Shane’s help?

    A.Via the Internet.

    B.By telephoning Shane.

    C.By advertising in the newspaper.

D.By sending the message to each other.

【3】What was Katelyn Ticer’s reaction to the McDaniels’ help?

    A.Stressed

    B.Satisfied

    C.Grateful

    D.Anxious

【4】What does the passage mainly tell us?

A.How to get wood for free?

B.What you did will be paid back.

C.People in Washington need wood greatly.

D.A family warmed others by chopping wood.

  • 22、 “ON a scale of one to ten, how would you rate your pain?”

Baymax, the plus-sized white robot, asks the question each time he detects (探测到) his patient’s pain. Considering that he is hardly like a typical Marvel superhero, how could this robotic caregiver from Big Hero 6 have stolen viewers’ hearts and taken home this year’s best animation Oscar?

Set in fictional San Fransokyo, the film follows Hiro, a 14-year-old robotics genius (天才). After his brother dies, he goes on a journey to save his city from an evil masked man with his brother’s invention, Baymax.

Baymax was named “Disney’s most straightforwardly adorable (萌的) character” in years by The Telegraph. He has a pure white pear-shaped body and stumpy elephant legs. And his eyes –just two black dots with a line through them can blink (眨眼) quickly or slowly. Baymax’s physical appearance “works with his personality because he’s purely good and naive (天真的),” co-director Don Hall told The Hollywood Reporter.

Sometimes Baymax is awkward. Moving in tight spaces gets challenging with his potbelly (大肚子). And when his batteries run low, he behaves like an amusing drunk. “This means that he is not at all intimidating (令人生畏的) and is easy to like,” commented The Straits Times in Singapore.

Baymax is a comforting friend, the kind that perhaps everyone needs.

After he diagnoses (诊断) Hiro with feeling sorrow, he says: “Physical comfort helps too,” and pulls Hiro into a hug. He pats his head, saying: “There, there.”

The team’s car crashes into the water at one point, and they have to walk shivering (颤抖) back home. Baymax notices that everyone’s body temperatures are low, so he turns on his internal heaters. Everyone cuddles (依偎) up with him. “This is like spooning (拥抱) with a warm marshmallow (棉花糖),” says Fred, one of the characters.

One minute, he is used as a bouncy castle (充气城堡), and the next he transforms into a superhero.

To fight against the villain, Hiro upgrades Baymax so that the robot can attack and fly. The robot has a hard time figuring out these new skills, but after he realizes that Hiro is happy with his improvement, he immediately becomes an expert. The treatment is working, he says.

Tencent Entertainment calls the amazing Baymax a perfect companion. He is quiet, clumsy, and adorable. But at important times, he steps up and stops at nothing to protect his friends from harm, even if it means that he has to sacrifice his life. This is an idealized (理想化的) relationship in harsh reality,” the site commented.

【1】What does Baymax do when he discovers Hiro is sad?

    A. He tries to amuse him by behaving awkwardly.

    B. He leaves him alone.

    C. He comforts him with a hug.

    D. He advises him to go for a walk.

【2】Which of the following adjectives best describe Baymax?

    A. Considerate and selfless. B. Adorable and humorous.

    C. Clumsy and cautious.   D. Brave and proud.

【3】What is the article mainly about?

    A. The plot and background of the movie Big Hero 6.

    B. The friendship between Hiro and Baymax in Big Hero 6.

    C. The reasons for the popularity of Baymax from Big Hero 6.

    D. What sets Big Hero 6 apart from other animation movies.

【4】Which of the following is TRUE about Baymax?

    A. Baymax’s awkwardness actually makes him more adorable and popular.

    B. Baymax was invented by Hiro, a robotics genius.

    C. Baymax’s physical appearance doesn’t quite match his personality.

    D. Baymax looks like a typical Marvel superhero.

  • 24、   From Mozart to Metallica, tons of people enjoy listening to various types of music while they paint, write, or draw. Many believe that music helps inspire creativity, but an international Study conducted by English and Swedish researchers is challenging that idea.

Psychologists from Lancaster University, The University of Gavle, and The University of Central Lancashire say that their findings indicate music actually prevents creativity.

To come to their conclusions, researchers had participants complete verbal insight(洞察) problems designed to inspire creativity while sitting in a quiet room, and then again while music played in the background. They found that background music "significantly impaired( 削弱)" the participants' ability to complete tasks associated with verbal creativity.

The research team also tested background noises such as those commonly heard in a library, but found that such noises had no impact on subjects' creativity.

The tasks were simple word games. For example, participants were given three words, such as dress, dial, and flower. Then, they were asked to find a single word associated with all three that could be combined to form a common phrase or word. The single word, in this case, would be "sun” (sundress, sunflower, etc.)

Participants completed the tasks in either a quiet room, or while exposed to three different types of music; music with unfamiliar lyrics, instrumental music, or music with familiar lyrics.

"We found strong evidence of impaired performance when playing background music in comparison to quiet background conditions," says co-author Dr. Neil McLatchie of Lancaster University.

Dr. McLatchie and his colleagues theorize that music interferes ( ) with the verbal working memory processes of the brain, preventing creativity. Also, as far as the library background noise having seemingly no effect, the study's authors believe that was the case because library noises create a "steady state" environment that doesn't prevent concentration.

It's worth mentioning that even familiar music with well known lyrics impaired participants creativity, regardless of whether or not it produced a positive reaction, or whether participants typically studied or created while listening to music.

"To conclude, the findings here challenge the popular view that music inspires creativity, and instead show that music, regardless of the presence of semantic(语义的) content (no lyrics, familiar lyrics or unfamiliar lyrics), always prevent creative performance in insight problem solving", the study reads.

1What conclusion can most probably be drawn from this passage?

    A.Background music inspires creativity.

    B.Background music impairs creativity.

C.Background noises have bad influence on creativity.

D.Different music has different effects on creativity.

    2The participants were asked to______________.

A.do some reading in a library

    B.design some verbal insight problems

    C.do some word games

    D.listen to some background music

3Why can't the participants perform well?

    A.Because the music prevents concentration.

B.Because they aren't familiar with music.

C.Because the tasks are too challenging

D.Bee the background is not creative.

4Which of the connections about background music with their learning effects is true?

A.The music with a positive reaction has a positive effect.

B.The effects depend on the contents of music.

C.Quiet music does good to learning effects.

D.All background music is bad for learning effects.
