二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、“I’m the smartest kid in class.” We all want our kids to be self-confident, but unrealistic perception(认知) of their academic abilities, a new study finds, damage a child’s relationship with others in the classroom: The more one student feels unrealistically superior(更好的) to another, the less the two students like each other.

Katrin Rentzsch of Bamberg University in Germany first became interested in the effects of such self-perception when she was studying how people became labeled as nerds(书呆子). “I really got interested in the question of whether it’s OK to boast(吹嘘) about achievements,” she says.

This line of thinking led her towards something psychologists call “self-enhancement” -when a person feels unrealistically superior to someone else. So Rentzsch and her colleague Michela Schroder-Abe decided to take a closer look at how such self-enhancement affects relationships, so they turned to the eighth-grade classroom, somewhere they could measure differences between actual academic performance, and social popularity. The 358 students came from 20 eighth-grade classes in schools in southeast Germany.

The researchers asked each student to rate their classmates, in terms of their likability and of their feelings of academic superiority. They then compared those ratings with the students’ grades in math, physics, German and English. Importantly, they conducted the analysis at two different social levels: “habitual”-the way people act in general, and “relationship”-the way someone acts around a specific individual.

In future work, Rentzsch would like to look at these effects on adults, perhaps specifically in team work. She’s also interested in self-enhancement beyond academic achievements, for example physical attractiveness. And another question to explore is why students overestimate their academic abilities. Perhaps it is because of too much praise from their parents or teachers.

1According to paragraph 1, what should a student do to be more popular in class?

    A. Try to love other students.

    B. Share with others his achievements.

    C. Think highly of others’ academic abilities.

    D. Have a correct view of his academic abilities.

2What was each student required to do during the study?

    A. Analyze their relationships with others.

    B. Compare themselves with the others.

    C. Make assessments about each other.

    D. Share their academic performance.

3The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to   .

    A. students’ academic abilities.

    B. students’ desire to be praised.

    C. students’ difficulty in exploration.

    D. students’ overestimation of their academic abilities.

4What would Rentzsch study in the future?

    A. The effect of self-enhancement on students.

    B. The influence of self-enhancement on adults.

    C. The cause of people’s physical attractiveness.

    D. The ways of making academic achievements.

  • 22、Monty Hempel is a professor of environmental science at Redlands University in California. He studies ecological literacy-or ecoliteracy (生态素养) for short. Ecoliteracy is the ability to think about and understand the natural processes that make life possible.

Monty Hempel says ecoliteracy gives people knowledge about environmental problems. But he says it does not always work to get them to change their behavior.

Mr. Hempel wrote part of the World watch Institute’s latest State of the World report. He says in his article, “Some people think that ecoliteracy is just a green form of science literacy. And what I have tried to ask is whether that’s enough. In other words, what an ecologically literate person needs to know might include things like the cycles and the flows, the energy systems, all of those kind of things that we would call the science of ecology.”

“That doesn’t seem to lead to action to protect our environment — to protect our life — support system to the level that we need to. Just because that we know, a lot about the environment doesn’t mean that we actually act to save it. After all, actions speak louder than knowledge.”

He adds that people may not be very worried about environmental problems if they seem far away. “Some people call it psychological distance. A lot of climate issues (问题) are worse in the Arctic and most of us don’t spend time in the Arctic. And so, there^ a certain distance. But there’s also a distance that’s happening in the world as it urbanizes (城市化) - people spending more time in front of screens and less time out in nature. We become, if you will, disconnected from the natural systems that used to be the key to success for a human being.”

To help children discover the wonders of nature, children should learn about nature in school, he adds. But he also points out there is a high mountain for people to climb from knowledge to action.

1From what Monty Hempel says in Paragraph 3, we learn that   .

    A. ecoliteracy is more than a green form of science literacy.

    B. people have learnt more knowledge about ecoliteracy.

    C. ecoliteracy can greatly affect how nature works.

    D. people with enough knowledge will better protect the environment.

2In Mr. Hempel’s opinion, which is the most important for environment protection?

    A. Knowledge.   B. Action.

    C. Green living theory.   D. Psychological distance.

3Mr. Hempel thinks people may show no concern about some environmental problems because   .

    A. they lack knowledge on environment protection.

    B. they are closely connected with the nature.

    C. the problems are not serious at all.

    D. the problems seem to be far away.

4What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

    A. It is the best way to learn about nature in school.

    B. Climbing a high mountain is a good way to exercise.

    C. It is easier to understand environment protection than to carry it out.

    D. people should first collect waste in the mountains to protect the environment.

  • 23、If you are thinking about asking for a raise in salary, there are several things to keep in mind. First, consider whether you decree a higher salary. 【1】 Sit down and make a list of your job accomplishments. Be as specific as possible. For example, think about important projects you have worked oh, things you have done to improve the organization of work in your department, or how your efforts have brought more money to the company. Also include any professional development opportunities you have taken advantage of recently and be ready to explain how they have improved your performance on the job. 【2】

Bear in mind that salary levels are based not only on performance but also on the market for your particular skills. Before you ask for a raise, you need to do some research. You should investigate the industry standards for salaries for people in similar positions with similar levels of experience 【3】 Your initial(最初的)request should actually be slightly higher than the amount you want in order to leave some room for negotiation. Then, if you have to go lower than this amount, you still end up with something close to what you want.

【4】 If you have recently been given new responsibilities, it makes sense to ask for a higher level of compensation(补偿). On the other hand, if the company is going through financial difficulties, a request for more money will probably not be met with a favorable response. It would be better to wait until the company is in a better financial position.

Finally, never give personal reasons for wanting a higher salary. Your need to pay your child’s college tuition or buy a bigger house is of no concern to your boss. 【5】 That is where you need to keep the conversation.

A.Everyone is eager for a raise in salary.

B.Skills play a key role in your salary level.

C.An important point is the timing of your request.

D.Then you will be better prepared when you meet with your boss.

E.Your salary level should be based on professional considerations alone.

F.You probably do, but you should be able to explain exactly why to your boss.

G.This will help you determine what would be a reasonable amount of money to ask for.

  • 24、Most Chinese people these days know what it is like to have an “English teacher”, since almost all pupils study English from their third year. Usually that first English teacher will be a young and lovely lady in primary school. But my first English teacher is none other than my father. Looking back, I can see that, when I was only a little girl, he created an English environment by providing me with flashcards, fun English-language toys and even dolls which can sing English songs! My interest in English had certainly been awakened when I began to learn English at school. Just imagine, he went a step further and asked me to learn New Concept English by myself! I was confused and even angry. I could not understand why a father could be so strict with his little girl. All the same, he never gave up and he gently insisted that I follow his ideas. At first, I read stories with tears in my eyes and I actually hated them because they were too difficult for me. In the end, I came to love the funny stories and, to be honest, my father was always there with a helping hand. I am sure that my English would never have got so far without his support. And that’s why my father is not only my first English teacher but also my lifelong teacher. He is the one who awoke my interest, who gave me confidence and who offered me much needed help.
