二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   It is irrefutable: Parents, who talk to, read and engage with their very young children as often as possible, help them build literacy (读写能力) skills at an early age.

Also certain: Parents of very young children usually have to do a lot of laundry. And low-income families tend to bring their kids with them to public laundromats (洗衣房).

Those truths appear once a week at select neighborhood laundromats in Chicago. That’s when librarians lay down colorful mats and oversized board books beside the industrial washing machines.

Inside one of about 14 laundromats in the city’s low-income neighborhoods, the librarians gather all available children for Laundromats Story Time (LST), a Chicago Public Library (CPL) program.

With the noise of the washers and dryers, anywhere between a handful to more than a dozen children hear stories, sing songs and play games designed to help their brains develop. The event also aims to instruct parents on how to repeat the experience for their kids, working to raise poor literacy rates in underserved communities.

"We read books, we sing songs, we do plays," says Becca Ruidl, the CPL’s STEAM Team early learning manager, who runs the LST program. "We kind of keep it going so parents can walk in adn join in at any time. But a big part of what we do is model literacy skills for parents so they can do it at home with their kids."

While a laundromat seems an unlikely place to engage with children, "we really wanted to meet people in the community where they’re. "Ruidl says.

And it clearly meets a need: Library officials say the program is in increasing demand, while Ruidl says families have adjusted their household’s laundry day to suit the librarians’ laundromat visits. At the same time, LST’s co-sponsors—including a laundry industry trade group and Libraries Without Borders, an organization fighting poverty through literacy—have worked with the CPL to draft an instruction handbook to help expand the concept to other U.S. cities.

1What does the word “irrefutable” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

    A.Undoubtful. B.Controversial.

    C.Impossible. D.Fruitful.

2Why are public laundromats chosen for LST?

A.Parents of poor families do a lot of laundry.

B.They offer a perfect atmosphere for learning.

C.Poor parents often go there with their kids.

D.Reading to kids promotes their literacy skills.

3What can we infer about LST from the last paragraph?

A.It is demanding. B.Its focus has been adjusted.

C.It will fight poverty. D.Its concept will be spread.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.Literacy at the Laundromat B.Models of Parenting

C.Laundromats for Kids D.Magic in Story Time

  • 22、The human race shares this planet with millions of other species and forms of life. In recognizing that, it is always important to remember that our rapid rise of the urban civilization(城市文明) has unavoidably impacted the planet and life on it.

In the long run, however, the civilization risks destroying well balanced ecosystems, which could potentially have serious results for humanity itself. As such,we must eventually find a balance between development and nature which can maintain the ecology, beauty and harmony(和谐) of the earth.

The word “harmony” is an important concept in China. Chinese society and culture are built on the idea that relationships between people should be harmonious, which means avoiding conflict, highlighting a common good and balancing uncontrollable desires with the needs of society as a whole. However, this idea does not just apply to people, it also applies to our relationships with the world and nature. Never has this been more meaningful than the view of how China handles its rapid development, which has lastingly changed the country’s landscape and created new challenges regarding nature and the environment.

Actually, over the past few years China has been working hard to protect biodiversity and has drawn “red lines” for ecological protection, established a national park system, and undertaken major projects for biodiversity protection.

One example of China’s success in this area is in its reversing(逆转) of the decrease of its giant panda population to the point that it is no longer endangered. This effort included creating a giant panda national park in 2016 and doubling the number of births. Pandas have become “a global symbol of conservation success”—something in which China has played a key part.

Likewise, China is also taking its efforts overseas. It recently announced a $232 million fund to promote biodiversity protection in developing countries. The effort is a part of its “community of shared future for mankind”, meaning that we share one world, one planet and one future, and so we human beings must work together. Now it is the time to act.

【1】Which potential risk along with the urban civilization is mentioned?

    A.Loss of the natural scenery.

    B.Breaking the ecosystem balance.

    C.The disappearance of all species.

    D.Ruining our human health.

【2】What is the main idea of paragraph 3?

A.The word “harmony” refers to good interpersonal relationship.

B.Human’s uncontrolled desires aren’t connected with harmony.

C.Keeping in harmony makes a difference to China’s development.

D.Balancing development and nature isn’t complicated as imagined.

【3】What does the author want to tell us by the example of pandas?

A.China has completed the task of protecting biodiversity.

B.China has made some achievements of protecting biodiversity.

C.The population of giant panda is gradually decreasing recently.

D.Pandas have become the most successful representative of China。

【4】Which of the following can best describe China’s role in protecting biodiversity?

    A.Fundamental.

    B.Unique.

    C.Indirect.

    D.Mysterious.

  • 23、On Aug. 13, four Chinese irrigation (灌溉) sites won global recognition and were added to the 2018 list of Heritage Irrigation Structures. Let’s look at these amazing sites.

    Dujiangyan

Dujiangyan is the oldest and only surviving dam-less irrigation system in the world. More than 2,000 years ago, Chengdu was threatened by frequent flooding from the Minjiang River. Li Bing, a local official, studied the situation and designed the Dujiangyan irrigation system, which could control the water flow from the mountains to the Chengdu Plain throughout the year.

The Dujiangyan irrigation system has created harmony between man, earth and water. It is the last remaining ecological project of its kind.

    Changqu Canal

Changqu Canal is in the city of Xianyang in Hubei province. It is 48 km long and was originally used to transport soldiers. It was later used for irrigation – in fact, it is still used to provide water to more than 20 square km of farmland.

“The recognition of irrigation heritage is intended to help us better use ancient irrigation projects that are still functioning and preserve our precious historical and cultural heritage,” says a notice on the official website of the Hubei provincial government.

    Lingqu Canal

Lingqu Canal is located in Xing’an county, near Guilin, Guangxi province. As the oldest canal in the world, it has been described as “another wonder of the world”. The design of the canal is unique. “It magically shows the ease of transportation along the north and south waterways,” according to the Travel China Guide.

    Jiang-Xi Dam

The Jiang-Xi Dam in Zhejiang province actually consists of two dams–the Jiang and Xi dams. Built in the 14th century, it improved life for local people for centuries. “It not only plays an important role in irrigation, but also responds to environmental governance,” said Ding Kunlun, vice chairman of International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage.

【1】What do we know about Dujiangyan?

A.It has no dam and has existed for over 2000 years.

B.Li Bing was tasked to design it as a local official.

C.It could control the Minjiang River most of the time in a year.

D.After it was built Chengdu was never threatened by flood.

【2】What was the use of Changqu Canal at first?

    A.Military purpose.

    B.Water supply.

    C.Farmland irrigation.

    D.The ease of transportation.

【3】Which of the following has an influence on the ecological environment according to the passage?

    A.Dujiangyan and Changqu Canal.

    B.Dujiangyan and Jiang Xi Dam.

C.Changqu Canal and Jiang Xi Dam.

    D.Dujiangyan and Lingqu Canal.

  • 24、Imagine how you’d feel if you had to get more than 9,000 tons of junk out to the sidewalk. That’s how much trash is floating around in space. In fact, there’s about 4 million pounds flying over our heads in low-Earth orbit. Daan, a Dutch artist, and his team at Space Waste Lab have come up with a creative plan that could clear up space junk in a spectacular fashion.

①Most space waste comes from dead satellites and rockets. Functioning satellites are the backbone of the information systems that keep our world running smoothly. But all the satellites eventually become obsolete within just a few decades. When they die out, there’s the problem of them drifting in outer space, collecting in what scientists call the “graveyard orbit”.

Maybe you’re thinking, “Why should I care about garbage 12,500 miles above me?” Well, all that fun stuff that satellites help beam down to us — mobile games, Instagram, cat videos — could be shut down by space waste. Lots of old junk floating around up there, plus new satellites added each year, means more and more high-speed collisions (碰撞). And when chunks of junk crash into one another, they break apart into millions of pieces, quickly building up speed and turning into fast-moving objects, which are dangerous to operational satellites as well as astronauts working on the International Space Station.

②Space waste is a problem that’s escalated so much that some scientists say that by 2050 we’ll be forced to stop launching new spacecraft altogether, including new satellites. Think about that for a minute. When the last satellites finally become disused, GPS, cell phones, and the Internet will no longer function.

③So we have to find a way to deal with this space garbage, and Daan pictures a sort of trash pickup, which involves groups of small spacecraft casting large nets into orbit that would collect space debris(碎片) and send it back toward Earth at top speed. Here’s the best part — while reentering Earth’s atmosphere, the pieces of junk would burn up all at once, creating a light show similar to hundreds of shooting stars falling in the night sky. A spectacle indeed!

To get ready for such an amazing effort, Space Waste Lab has been traveling to major cities across Europe and enlightening the public on the problem of the junk in space. But Daan doesn’t just talk about ways to relieve the problem — he’s created something a little grander than that. In October 2018, his team launched Space Waste Lab Performance, an outdoor art exhibition that shows the location of each piece of space trash using large lasers that make each debris look a bit like a star wandering slowly and silently over the sky, allowing viewers to wave and say, “Hello, space trash!”

【1】According to the passage, which sentence best replaces the question mark in the diagram?

A.There is more junk floating in space each year as new satellites are added.

B.Satellites can help people track the weather and find new locations.

C.Working satellites can be damaged and astronauts can be hurt.

D.The Space Waste Lab Performance can show people where satellites are located.

【2】Which of the following best supports the idea that space waste should be dealt with very soon?

    A.Sentence ①

    B.Sentence ②

    C.Sentence ③

    D.Sentence ④

【3】Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?

    A.Space Junk Harms Digital Systems

    B.Test of Waste Collection Nets

C.A New Glimpse into Outer Space

    D.Artists’ Proposal to Save Space

    【4】What’s the writer’s attitude towards Daan’s project?

    A.Critical.

    B.Indifferent.

    C.Neutral.

    D.Approving.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Scout could clearly remember the night she had to leave her home in Poland. It was the beginning of World War II and her family had to escape as soon as possible. She quickly packed a suitcase with a few pieces of clothing, her diary, and her most prized treasure, a silk scarf. Scout and her best friend, Betty, had persuaded their parents to buy them matching scarves, which they took as a symbol of their friendship. Scout didn’t know she was going to America and would not be returning.

Scout kept that special silk scarf for many years. One day she decided to give it to her granddaughter, Eliza, to wear to her first job interview for good luck. Scout was afraid that Eliza would lose the scarf, but the granddaughter promised, “Don’t worry, Grandma. Nothing’s going to happen to your scarf. You’ll see that it’s going to bring both of us luck.” And with that, Eliza kissed her grandmother and left for the interview.

Leaving the interview, Eliza felt confident that she had got the job so she decided to celebrate by going to a restaurant. Sitting at her table, Eliza felt an elderly woman staring at her for a long time.

“I’m sorry. Do I know you?” Eliza asked.

“I’m sorry, dear, but you remind me of my best friend,” the old woman replied. “She looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like yours.” Eliza listened carefully, with her eyes and mouth wide open. She had heard stories of her grandmother’s best friend and knew the meaning of the scarf. Could this woman be Betty, her grandmother’s childhood friend?
