二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Columbus Day has been on American calendars since 1937, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared October 12 a federal holiday to honor the Italian explorer who “discovered” the Americas in 1942. However, the holiday has always been controversial. Many people believe that Christopher Columbus should not be given credit for “discovering” the continent, since native Americans had already been living there for generations.

Besides, the explorer’s mission was not a scientific “voyage of discovery”, but one intended to conquer the new land. Critics maintain that the Spanish army Columbus brought on his second voyage, caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of indigenous(土著的) people. Those that survived the massacre became slaves, working in mines. Many, therefore, believe that the explorer’s arrival should not be celebrated.

In 1977, a delegation of Native nations at the International Conference on Discrimination Against Indigenous Populations in the Americas, proposed renaming the holiday to “Indigenous People’s Day”. The proposal passed with a majority.

However, convincing the rest of the country to do the same was not that easy. It took 15 years before the city of Berkeley in California adopted the name in 1992 and then 22 more years before Minneapolis, MN and Seattle, WA did the same in 2014. The following year, eight more cities including Albuquerque, NM and Portland, OR, began celebrating the second Monday of October as “Indigenous People’s Day”. The movement really started to gain momentum in 2016 when 19 cities, including Boulder, CO and Phoenix, AZ, as well as the states of Minnesota and Vermont, all decided to rename the day to honor Native Americans. In 2017, 21 more cities, including Austin, TX and Los Angeles, CA have made the shift.

With the increasingly larger number of cities moving away from Columbus Day each year, it will be interesting to see if “Indigenous People’s Day” gets federal recognition. Meanwhile, it will continue to be the focal point of debates throughout the Americas.

1Which of the following is the best title of the passage?

    A. Indigenous People’s Day Has Got Federal Recognition after Years’ Work

    B. Columbus Day Honoring the Italian Explorer Has Always Been Controversial

    C. Christopher Columbus Should Not Be Given Credit for Discovering Americas

    D. More Cities Have Replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous People’s Day

    2Many people don’t agree that .

    A. Columbus discovered the continent

    B. Columbus was a remarkable explorer

    C. Native Americans were abused

    D. Columbus Day is a public holiday

3What can we infer from the second paragraph?

    A. Columbus was well received by indigenous people

    B. The indigenous people hated the Columbus’ arrival

    C. The Spanish army rebelled against Columbus’ rule

    D. Few soldiers survived the attack by native Americans

4Which of the following cities is the earliest to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous People’s Day?

    A. Portland   B. Phoenix

    C. Seattle   D. Los Angeles

  • 22、   In the early days of farming, people did not understand how plants got essential nutrients. Sometimes, wood ash, fish remains and slaughterhouse (屠宰场) waste were thrown on land just to get rid of them. Then, people started to notice that the grass and bushes on this land began to grow very well. They extrapolated that if their farmland was similarly treated, the growth of their crops would also improve. People gradually began to realize that the nutrients required by plants came from the soil and that the amount of nutrients could be increased by the application of such organic remains to the soil.

Manuring (给……施肥) the soil has been practiced since the seventeenth century. However, the importance of manuring the soil was not properly understood until scientists began to study the nutritional needs of plants and that gave birth to chemical fertilizers. Thus, gradually, the use of fertilizers became accepted by farmers.

It has been well-known that applying manure to the soil can bring many different kinds of benefits. It joins together the soil particles(微粒) to form soil crumbs (碎屑). The crumb structure is a desirable condition of soil for farming. The addition of manure to soil will increase the nutritional content which helps to prevent loss of plant nutrients when it rains.

Unlike manure, fertilizers are inorganic substances which do not improve the structure of the soil. They only supply extra amounts of nutrients to the growing plants when applied to the soil. Besides knowing the type of fertilizer to use, a farmer also needs to know when to apply the fertilizer and how to apply it. The fertilizer should be applied at the time when the plants need a particular nutrient most. The time and method of application will determine how profitably the fertilizers have been used in farming. Fertilizers which have not been properly applied cannot be absorbed in large quantities by plant roots. These fertilizers may be washed away by rain or they may kill the plants. This would mean a financial loss for the farmer.

【1】What inspired farmers to apply organic remains to the soil?

A.The difficulty to get rid of the waste.

B.The nutrients that were needed by plants.

C.The better growth of some grass and bushes.

D.The traditional methods to treat their farmland.

【2】What does the underlined word “extrapolated” in Paragraph 1 mean?

    A.Reasoned.

    B.Hoped.

    C.Suggested.

    D.Promised.

【3】What brought chemical fertilizers into existence?

    A.Nutrition of plants.

    B.Scientific research.

    C.Farmers’ acceptance.

    D.Changes of soil.

【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Fertilizers may not be fully taken in by plants.

B.Manure is organic substances that don’t improve soil.

C.Fertilizers do more harm than good to plants and soil.

D.Knowledge on fertilizer is beyond farmers’ understanding.

  • 23、   Although ethics(道德)lessons are common around the world, scientists are unsure if the lessons can actually change behavior. But a new study found that a single ethics lesson may have had lasting effects.

The researchers investigated one lesson’s impact on eating meat. They chose this particular behavior for three reasons, according to study co-author Eric, a philosopher at the University of California: students’ attitudes on the topic are variable, behavior is easily measurable, and eating less meat is good because it reduces environmental harm and animal suffering. The researchers studied students in four classes. Half of them read an article on the ethics of factory-farmed meat, watched an 11-minute video on the topic and joined a 50-minute discussion. The other half focused on charitable giving instead. Then, the researchers studied their meal-card purchases for that semester-nearly 14,000 receipts(收据)for almost 500 students. “It’s an awesome data set,” says Nina Strohminger, a psychologist who teaches business ethics and was not involved in the study.

For students who discussed meat ethics, meal purchases containing meat decreased from 52 to 45 percent-and this effect held steady for the study’s duration of several weeks. Purchases from the other group remained at 52 percent.

“That’s actually a pretty large effect for a pretty small intervention,” Eric says. Strohminger agrees, “The thing that still blows my mind is that just one ethics lesson should have such an obvious effect.”

Eric believes the greatest impact came from classmates or teaching assistants leading the discussions. Second, the video may have had an emotional impact. Least influential, he thinks was argument. Now the researchers are investigating the specific effects of teaching style teachers’ eating habits and students’ video exposure.

1How did the researchers carry out the study?

    A.By making a comparison. B.By introducing a concept.

C.By presenting an argument. D.By referring to another study.

2What does the underlined phrase “blows my mind” in paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.Annoys me. B.Surprises me. C.Bothers me. D.Frightens me.

3According to Eric, what may have the least effect on students’ meat purchases?

    A.Argument. B.Teaching style. C.Teaching assistants. D.The video exposure.

4What is the purpose of the study?

    A.To improve students’ lifestyles.

B.To call on students to eat less meat.

C.To encourage students to take ethics lessons.

D.To tell the effects of ethics lessons on behavior.

  • 24、   They can be identified by their independent-bookstore bags or printed piles of paper they look through on their lap. They are, for lack of a more specific term, reader. Joining their group seems simple enough: Get a book and read it! But behind that simple process is a question of motivation—of why some people grow up to derive great pleasure from reading, while others don’t.

Some people are much more likely than others to become members of the reading class. First, the more education people have, the more likely they are to be readers. Beyond that, urban people read more than rural people. Affluence(富裕) is associated with reading. Young girls read earlier than boys do and continue to read more in adulthood.

Of course, possessing any of these characteristics doesn’t guarantee that someone will or won’t become a reader. Personality also seems to play a role. “Introverts who find it difficult to talk to others seem to be a little bit more likely to do a lot of leisure-time reading,” Daniel Willingham, a professor of psychology at the University of Virginia said.

Willingham also talked about the importance of the number of books in one’s childhood home. Studies looking at “family scholarly culture” have found that children who grew up surrounded by books tend to attain higher levels of education and to be better readers than those who didn’t. There is no doubt that being a reader sets a child up for academic success, since so much of school is reading.

Reading will seem more like chocolate cake if it’s something that parents themselves take part in happily and regularly. “When I’m sitting there on my couch, reading a book, and my kids are doing their own thing, I like to think, ‘I’m parenting right now—they can see me reading this book,’” Maria Russo, the children’s-books editor said. Similarly, right after dinner, if you scroll through your phone, open up your laptop, or watch TV, kids are likely to take note.

Parents don’t have to become avid readers themselves to raise avid readers. Russo suggested a bunch of things that parents can do to make reading seem exciting and worthwhile: talk about books during meals or car rides, indicating that they’re just as compelling a subject of conversation as the day’s events; make regular stops at libraries and bookstores and stay a while; and give books as birthday gifts.

1According to the passage how can readers be identified?

    A.By their attractive appearances.

    B.By their independent schoolbags.

C.By their turning pages on their lap.

D.By their printed piles of test paper.

2In the view of Daniel Willingham, what kind of people is more likely to be readers?

A.Those living in the rural areas.

    B.Those receiving plenty of education.

C.Those quiet and willing to be alone.

D.Those having much money and many books.

3Why do children who grew up surrounded by books tend to achieve academic success?

A.Because much of school is reading.

B.Because their family are rich in scholarly culture.

C.Because they know the importance of reading books.

D.Because they are better readers and gain much education.

4Which of the following statement may Maria Russo agree with?

A.Reading will be unpleasant if parents involve themselves in it.

B.Parents should chat with their kids about books every day.

C.Reading books should be a necessary subject only for kids.

D.Regular stops at libraries and bookstores will give kids a gift.

5What is the best title of the passage?

A.What do parents do to help kids become readers?

B.Why do some people become lifelong readers?

C.How can people improve their efficiency of reading?

D.How can people form a good habit of reading books?
