21、Buildings, pollution, poor soil, insects, and even car crashes can add to tree loss. However, between 2016 and 2021, the city of Seattle in Washington state was reported to have lost about 255 hectares of tree covering, for which climate change was blamed. Then came the driest summer on Seattle’s record books in 2022. The drier conditions and hotter temperatures have left many trees with brown leaves, naked branches, and extreme seeding. These are all signs of tree stress.
According to Nicholas Johnson, a tree expert for Seattle City Parks, if this warming climate continues we are going to have a lot of trees die. Just like people, under the heat trees get weak.
Researchers from France and Australia studied the effect of hotter temperatures and less rain on more than 3,100 trees and plants in 164 cities across 78 countries. They found about half the trees in the cities were experiencing climate conditions beyond their limits. They also found that by 2050 nearly all trees planted in Australian cities will not survive.
It’s not the gradual change but these extreme swings of too much water, too little water, too much wind, and terrible storms that are going to cause these rapid changes. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina destroyed about 10 percent of the trees in New Orleans, Louisiana. And in 2021, Hurricane Ida uprooted many new tree plantings.
To settle the problem of tree loss, non-native trees, have been brought to cities for some time. In the city of Bellevue, Washington, experts are growing different kinds of trees specifically for climate change. On city grounds, they are planting baby giant sequoias, just a few centimeters tall. The giant sequoias are not native to the Pacific Northwest area. But the trees can deal with the lack of rain and insects. Once these trees are established, they grow incredibly fast. Having many different kinds and ages of trees is important to keeping urban forests alive.
“Life always finds a way,” said Nicholas Johnson. “And in Seattle, people are helping life find a way.”

22、 Dolphins have been known to show many human-like behavioral characteristics. These include forming complex relationships to accomplish common goals, teaching one another survival skills, and “babysitting” each other’s kids. Now, some researchers at Largo, Florida have discovered another thing the intelligent animals share with humans — a love for the television!
For their research, Kelly A. Winship and Holli C, Eskelinen observed 11 bottlenose and five rough-toothed dolphins. The animals were treated to two TV shows — Planet Earth and the popular kids’ series, SpongeBob SquarePants. The researchers say the dolphins did not seem to care what was being played. They were equally attracted by both — the realistic imagery of Planet Earth and the cartoon in SpongeBob SquarePants.
Interestingly, however, the male dolphins spent more time staring at the screen than the females. They also responded more strongly to the programming by either showing aggression (indicated by head moves), or interest (shown by raising their heads or pressing their foreheads against the TV), or even blowing bubbles (indicating interest or aggression). Winship and Eskelinen, who published their findings in the journal Zoo Biology, believe the display of aggression was most likely a result of the failure to physically interact with, or manipulate, the TV.
Though there is a lot more to learn about the animals’ television preferences, the scientists believe suitable programming could be used as part of enrichment programs for dolphins unfit to be released in the wild. The researchers also think monitoring their response to different kinds of shows could provide scientists with some insight into the dolphins’ thinking process.
【1】What have researchers newly discovered about dolphins?
A.They somewhat behave like humans. B.They offer help to each other
C.They are highly intelligent. D.They enjoy watching TV shows.
【2】In which way are male and female dolphins different when watching TV?
A.The time of body moments. B.Program preferences.
C.The strength of response. D.Interacting methods.
【3】What does the underlined word “manipulate” refer to in the third paragraph?
A.Have control over. B.React to. C.Catch sight of. D.Turn on.
【4】In what aspect could the research on dolphins be important to scientists?
A.Learning about their TV preference. B.Enriching their life in the wild.
C.Monitoring their daily behaviors. D.Studying how they think.
23、During the outbreak, watching TV shows has become the most popular activity, according to a survey by Chinese market research company Guideline Research. The survey also points out that people have many ways to watch shows apart from cable TV. They include smartphones, computers, and tablets.
It’s true that TV is not usually watched on an actual TV anymore. Technology has not only changed where but also how we watch TV.
Streaming (流媒体) networks, rather than live TV, have helped viewers watch their favorite shows when it’s most convenient for them. In the US, content providers like Netflix and Amazon Prime keep people entertained. Users can choose which services offer the shows and movies they like.
Binge-watching (刷剧) has become a new trend due to some companies releasing entire seasons at once. Without having to wait for next week’s episode (集), viewers can watch the whole season in a day, or at whatever pace (速度) they choose. Netflix has also released a choose-your-own-adventure movie, where your choices can affect how the story ends, an idea not possible before with traditional TV.
User-generated (用户创造的) content apps like TikTok are also blurring (模糊)the lines of what is considered TV. This may be the biggest change to the TV landscape, as anyone can compete with professional, big-budget (大制作的) TV shows. This trend shows no sign of slowing down.
【1】What does “They” refer to in Paragraph 1?
A.Research companies.
B.Means of watching shows
C.People.
D.TV shows.
【2】What has changed the way we watch TV?

24、Cecilia Payne was born in England to highly successful parents. Her father was a fellow of Oxford University, and her mother was a talented artist. She showed a great talent for music. 【1】 However, it was science that stole her heart. Her mother had told her of a bee orchid, a plant that resembled (类似) a bumblebee, and upon discovering this Payne’s mind was set on pursuing a career in science.
As a young adult she won herself a scholarship to study at the University of Cambridge’s Newnham College, where she began studying botany, chemistry and physics. 【2】 After one lecture given by Arthur Eddington on the general theory of relativity, Payne lost sleep thinking about its meaning. Her destiny (命运) had been set, and for the rest of her undergraduate years she majored in physics and became absorbed in astronomy, her true love.
【3】 She went there to work with Harlow Shapley and Princeton’s Henry Norris Russell, two of the most notable researchers in her field at the time. In just two years, Payne completed her PhD essay on the chemical composition of the stars. Her results proved groundbreaking: the Sun was made up mainly of hydrogen and helium. But Russell disagreed with her findings as they conflicted with the accepted theories of the day. 【4】 He reached the same conclusion as Payne by different means.
Payne remained at Harvard for the rest of her academic career and grew into a huge success story. In the mid-1950s she made history again by becoming the first woman in her department to be promoted to a professorship. She died of lung cancer in 1979. 【5】.
A.It was here that she met the superstars of physics.
B.She would later go on to become a skilled pianist.
C.It changed the way astronomers understood the universe.
D.Payne gave up her studies under the pressure from Russel.
E.However, Russell stated her findings were correct four years later.
