二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Terrafugia Inc. said Monday that its new flying car has completed its first flight, bringing the company closer to its goal of selling the flying car within the next year. The vehicle —named the Transition – has two seats, four wheels and wings that fold up so it can be driven like a car. The Transition, which flew at 1,400 feet for eight minutes last month, can reach around 70 miles per hour on the road and 115 in the air. It flies using a 23-gallon tank of gas and burns 5 gallons per hour in the air. On the ground, it gets 35 miles per gallon.

Around 100 people have already put down a $10,000 deposit to get a Transition when they go on sale, and those numbers will likely rise after Terrafugia introduces the Transition to the public later this week at the New York Auto Show. But don’t expect it to show up in too many driveways. It’s expected to cost $279,000.And it won’t  help if you’re stuck in traffic. The car needs a runway.

Inventors have been trying to make flying cars since the 1930s, according to Robert Mann, an airline industry expert. But Mann thinks Terrafugia has come closer than anyone to making the flying car a reality. The government has already permitted the company to use special materials to make it easier for the vehicle to fly. The Transition  is now going through crash tests to make sure it meets federal safety standards.

Mann said Terrafugia was helped by the Federal Aviation Administration’s decision five years ago to create a separate set of standards for light sport aircraft, which are lower than those for pilots of larger planes. Terrafugia

says an owner would need to pass a test and complete 20 hours of flying time to be able to fly the Transition, a requirement pilots would find relatively easy to meet.

What is the first paragraph mainly about?

    A. The basic data of the Transition.

    B. The advantages of flying cars.

    C. The potential market for flying cars.

    D. The designers of the Transition.

  • 22、   I had just delivered a memorized speech, and I was about to learn how the judges decided my performance. The audience leaned forward and a period of silence fell across the room. I felt the drum rolled in my heart.

The third-place winner was announced. The name was not mine. Then the second-place winner, still not me. At last, the moment of truth came. I was about to either enjoy the warmth of victory or regret the months’ preparation. My heart felt closer to the latter.

Losing is a part of life, and I have dealt with it on more than one occasion. However, it was an indescribable feeling to drive a 200-mile round trip get up very early on a freezing Saturday morning, and yet still finish fourth out of four competitors in my group. After Lincoln lost the 1858 Illinois Senate race, he said, “I felt like the 12-year-old boy who kicked his toe. I was too big to cry and it hurt too bad to laugh.” Oh yeah, I could relate.

I had spent many hours in front of a computer and in libraries doing research for the Lincoln Bicentennial Speech Contest. After not placing in the first year of the contest, I really wanted to compete again. Lincoln had many failures, but he never allowed them to defeat his spirit or ambition, so I was not going to give upon a second contest! I reworked my speech for the following year, but again I did not place.

I couldn’t accept the fact that I failed twice in something that I had worked so hard on, until I thought about my hero. Never mind the lost prize money and praise. Through learning stories about Lincoln, I discovered that I can fail successfully.

1How did the author feel after finishing his speech?

    A.Excited B.Relaxed

    C.Nervous D.Confident

2What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 3?

A.He was disappointed with his preparations.

B.He hurt his toes on the way to the library.

C.He got up late on the day of the contest.

D.He was bottom of his group.

3What made the author decide to enter the second contest?

A.The warmth of the victory. B.The inspiration from Lincoln.

C.His eagerness for the prize money. D.His desire to show himself on the stage.

4What can be the best title for the text?

A.Learn to fail successfully B.Never mind others’ judgments

    C.Lincoln—my hero D.Losing—an indescribable feeling

  • 23、Jake was a nine-year-old boy of an orphan’s home (孤儿院), one of ten children supported by what contributions the home could secure on a continuous struggle. There was very little to eat, but at Christmas there always seemed to be a little more than usual, and the home seemed a little warmer. It was a time for more than usual enjoyment, but more than this, there was an orange.

At Christmas time, each child received an orange; the only time of year that such a rare item was provided, and it was coveted (垂涎) by each child like no other thing they ever possessed. They would save it for several days, admiring it, feeling it, loving it, and contemplating the moment when they would eat it. Truly, many of them would wait until New Year’s Day or later to eat it.

This Christmas Day, Jake had disobeyed the regulations of the orphan’s home in some manner and his punishment was loss of the orange privilege. After a year of waiting for this rare occasion, and this most desired of all rewards, it was to be denied. Jake spent the Christmas Day empty and alone. It even seemed that the other children didn’t want to associate with a person who didn’t have an orange. Night time arrived and this was the worst time of all for Jake; he could not sleep. Silently, he cried, mostly because he didn’t have an orange like the other kids.

A soft hand placed on Jake’s shoulder shocked him momentarily and an object was quickly pressed into his hands. The donor disappeared into the dark of the room, leaving Jake with what he did not immediately identify as an orange. Not a regular run-of-the-orange, but one from parts of nine other oranges. Nine other highly prized oranges that would, of necessity, be eaten this day instead of several days hence.

【1】What can we learn from the first paragraph?

A.The orphan’s home was a rather warm place.

B.Jake lived a hard life in the orphan’s home.

C.Children in the orphan’s home enjoyed themselves.

D.The orphan’s home was devoted to ensuring children’s safety.

【2】What does the underlined word “contemplating” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Thinking about.

    B.Forgetting about.

    C.Preparing for.

    D.Showing off.

【3】Why was Jake unable to get an orange?

    A.He disliked to eat oranges.

    B.He preferred some other fruits.

C.He broke the rules of the orphan’s home.

D.He missed the chance to get one.

【4】How did Jake feel when he received the object?

    A.Curious.

    B.Frightened.

    C.Upset.

    D.Surprised.

  • 24、It’s easy to stick to eating the same foods every day, especially if you love them. 【1】

Eating the same foods can lead to nutritional shortage. Our bodies need a wide range of nutrients, and eating a wide variety of foods can help us meet our body’s needs. 【2】 Almost everyone would agree that “eat the rainbow” is a good rule of thumb. Don’t forget frozen vegetables are just as healthy as fresh and they don’t spoil as quickly.

Your immune (免疫) system will get hurt if you keep eating the same foods. According to a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, the enhanced nutrition from a varied diet seems to boost immunity. 【3】 People whose diets have little variation are more likely to get sick due to a weakened immune system.

Sticking to eating the same foods leads to food boredom. 【4】 It should be something you look forward to. Changing up what you eat exposes you to great new foods and new recipes, and helps bring back the fun in eating.

【5】 We see a lot of people focus on a single nutrient or food because it attracts media fame. And while all foods are to be celebrated for their unique nutritional quality, assigning yourself to a limited list of foods because they are the most well-known or well described will box you in and close you off from various other vital nutrients.

    A.Food should be fun!

    B.This helps people resist infections.

C.But it may not be the best thing for your health.

D.You should eat a plant-based diet and eat less meat.

E.Eating the same foods restricts your nutritional sources.

F.Though tasty, they can’t provide the nutrition you need.

G.Eat the colors of the rainbow when it comes to fruit and vegetables.
