21、There were smiling children all the way. Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favorite relatives. This is the simple village people of Malaysia. I was moved.
I had always traveled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not particularly relish the long train journey and had brought along a dozen magazines to read and reread. I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face. I sighed and sat down to read my Economics.
It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Baru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight. Immediately I came alive; I decided to wave back.
From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time.
The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 pm. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful. When my uncle arrived with a smile, I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug. I had never done this before. He seemed surprised and then his weather-beaten face warmed up with a huge smile. We walked arm in arm to his car. I looked forward to the return journey.

22、One night Buck woke up and heard the call again, a long howl. He ran into the forest. And there, his nose pointing to the sky, sat a wolf. The wolf started to run, and Buck followed him. They ran for hours through the forest, and then suddenly Buck remembered John Thornton. He turned and started to run back.
Thornton was eating dinner when Buck returned. Buck jumped all over him, and for two days never left his side. But after two days the call of the wild came again, and he remembered the forest and the wolf that had run with him.
He started to sleep out in the forest at night, sometimes staying out for three or four days. He ate well, and he grew stronger and quicker and more alive. His golden brown coat shone with health as he ran through the forest, learning its every secret, every smell, and every sound.
Nobody saw the change that happened when Buck was inside the forest. At once he became a thing of the wild, stepping softly and silently, a passing shadow among the trees.
In the autumn, Buck started to see moose (驼鹿) in the forest. One day he met a group of about twenty. The largest was two meters tall, and his antlers were more than two meters across. When he saw Buck, he got very angry. For hours Buck followed the moose; he wanted the big one, but he wanted him alone. By the evening Buck had driven the big old moose away from the others, and then he began his attack.
The animal weighed six hundred and fifty kilos—he was big enough and strong enough to kill Buck at once. Patiently, Buck followed him for four days, attacking and then jumping away. He gave him no peace, no time to eat or drink or rest, and slowly the moose became weaker. At the end of the fourth day Buck pulled the moose down and killed him. He stayed by the dead animal for a day and a half, eating, and then turned towards camp and John Thornton.

24、 As COVID-19 continues to spread among humans around the world, conservationists(环境保护主义者)are warning of its possible danger to another group: Africa's endangered mountain gorillas(大猩猩). Congo's Virunga National Park is home to about 30 percent of the world's mountain gorillas.
The park is closed until June 1 because scientists believe the gorillas may be able to catch COVID-19. Mountain gorillas can get some diseases that humans get. A simple cold can kill a gorilla, says the Worldwide Fund for Nature. That is why park visitors are not allowed to get too close to gorillas. Rules call for a 7-meter distance between gorillas and humans.
Conservationists have welcomed the decision. Paula Kahumbu leads the Kenya-based conservation group WildlifeDirect. She says that “every possible effort must be made” to protect mountain gorillas because so few are left in the wild.
Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka is the leader of the Uganda-based Conservation Through Public Health. She noted a study done this year by her organization and Ohio University. She said the study showed that the rule separating gorillas and tourists was not effective.
Kalema-Zikusoka said the study showed that the seven-meter rule was useless almost every time a group of visitors entered the park. She said visitors were responsible for that about sixty percent of the time. In the other cases, it was the gorillas that moved too close to the humans.
Uganda has not announced a shutdown of gorilla park tourism. However, the number of visitors from Europe and other places has sharply reduced.
Mountain gorillas have been listed as endangered since 1996.But their population is now growing. Tourism brings much foreign money into Rwanda and Uganda. The money got from tourism is important in efforts to protect mountain gorillas. Officials can use it to help local communities. Some observers worry a fall in tourism during the COVID-19 crisis(危机)could endanger gorillas.
【1】Why is the Congo's Virunga National Park closed?
A.Because scientists have made some new rules.
B.Because scientists think gorillas may get COVID-19.
C.Because there are no tourists during the COVID-19 crisis.

A.the 7-meter rule is useful
B.the visitors are breaking the rule all the time

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My husband and I travel a lot. We had a horse, a wonderful horse called Dusty. We were out of town when a one-hundred-mile horse race went right past the road in front of my house. My horse wanted to compete in the race, so she jumped over the fence and left quickly.
The next day my husband and I came back home. We found a note on the front door from the police. It said that my horse had gone back to a bam(牲口棚)on the other side of town. She had been born there eighteen years before. So we drove there. It was a lovely old farm and it was owned then by people I didn't know.
The new owners were a man, his wife and their children, two little girls aged seven and five. We saw Dusty was in the bam. “When the little girls got up that morning, they started screaming(尖叫),” their father said. That was because at the top of the hill, with the sun rising, was this beautiful horse. They attracted her to the bam. They spent the day brushing her and treating her.
The seven-year-old girl turned to me. She said, “Can I ride her before you take her back?” I said, “Yes.” And then I went to a store and bought a bottle of apple juice. When I returned, they told me they had always wished for a horse. But their parents really didn't have the money for one, which made them give up the dream.
I told them I was going to give them Dusty. And I wanted them to make a promise. Someday when they grow up, they each may find a little girl — a little girl they don't know — and give her some very special gifts that she is always looking forward to. They agreed.
