21、Global Destinations Where Visitors Are Strictly Off-Limits (禁止进入的)
In our times, we like to think that we can travel whenever and wherever we’d like. However, there are destinations around the globe that are simply off-limits. The reasons for these closures vary.
HEART REEF, AUSTRALIA
Located in Queensland’s Whitsundays, Heart Reef is a heart-shaped formation of coral nestled within Hardy Reef which was first discovered in 1975. As it’s a protected area, no one is allowed to swim or dive near Heart Reef. Luckily, it’s visible from above, so visitors can still take in this romantic natural formation by air.
SVALBARD SEED VAULT, NORWAY
While there are many seed vaults (种子库) around the world, perhaps the best known - and largest - is Norway’s Svalbard Seed Vault. It holds seeds from crops around the world as a safety measure against seed loss. As of June 2021, it held over I million different crop samples. The vault itself is closed to the public, thought ours bring groups to visit the entrance.
LASCAUX CAVES, FRANCE
The Lascaux Caves are one of the great treasures of pre-historic art. For about I5 years thousands of visitors a day entered the caves to enjoy the Paleolithic paintings, but by 1963 that had come to an end. The caves were closed to the public because the carbon dioxide generated by all the visitors caused green mold to cover the artwork. Since that time, art historians have worked diligently to restore balance in the caves.
SNAKE ISLAND, BRAZIL
As its name suggests, the island is completely filled with poisonous snakes. One to five snakes per square meter make the island their home, including the lethal Golden Lancehead viper. 22、 Modem technology allows scientists to look inside a living human brain to see what is happening. These procedures are safe and painless. By understanding the normal brain activity, doctors and scientists are better able to assess the brain behavior during times of injury, disease, and mental illness.
CT or CAT scans: Computed tomography (CT) or computerized axial tomography (CAT) shows images of the brain by passing multiple X-ray beams through the brain tissue. CT or CAT scans show a cross-section of the brain. These scans can be used to find brain tumors.
MRI scans : Magnetic resonance imaging ( MRI) uses powerful magnet to cause the atoms of the brain to shake, MRI sensors pick up the signals emitted ( Hi) from the brain5s atoms and a computer interprets them as a picture, MRIs show more detail than CT or CAT scans can. They are especially useful in finding brain tumors that grow on the back of the brain, between the ears.
PET scans: Positron emission tomography ( PET) is different from other scans because it shows how the brain functions. After a person bloodstream is injected with a small dose of glucose (葡萄糖),which is what gives the brain energy, scanners around the head detect where the glucose moves. The PET scan shows which part of the brain uses a lot of glucose, which are the more active parts. PET scans are helpful for diagnosing strokes, studying mental illness, and learning how the brain processes language.
【1】How can doctors and scientists understand the brain’s reaction to injury, disease, or mental illness?
A.By contrasting/comparing it with normal brain activities.
B.By passing the X-Ray beams through the brain tissue,
C.By picking up the signals emitted from the brain^ atoms.
D.By being injected with glucose and detecting where it moves.
【2】Which of the following is helpful for diagnosing brain tumors?
A.CT / CAT and PET. B.MRI and PET.

23、Never Let Me Go is a novel by British author Sir Kazuo Ishiguro. It combines science fiction, horror, and coming-of-age elements in a beautiful but cruel story, which deals with the power of friendship, the pains of growing up, and self-sacrifice in the face of a cruel situation.
The book centers on Tommy, Ruth, and Kathy, who tells the story. It describes their childhood at a strange boarding school called Hailsham House, where the children all have excellent medical care but a very low quality of life. The students and teachers also act very strangely. A frightening reality is revealed: The students are all “donors”—clones of other people—who were created to donate their organs once they grow up.
The novel Never Let Me Go is not the only one by Sir Kazuo Ishiguro. He has also written six other novels, a number of short stories, four screenplays, and a handful of song lyrics. His moving words are highly regarded by both readers and critics. He has been nominated (提名) for the well-known Man Booker Prize four times, and he won in 1989 with his novel, The Remains of the Day. In 2017, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Though Ishiguro has written screenplays, he was not the one who adapted Never Let Me Go into a film. The film version was released in 2010 and still stayed true to the novel. Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley, and Andrew Garfield played Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy. I was on the whole a success with critics and was well-liked at film festivals around the world. The movie version, however, could not live up to the book in the end. Although audiences generally praised the movie and the actors’ performances, the film version did not reach the same level of success as the novel.

A.It is at a non-profit.
B.It serves an immoral purpose.
C.The students have physical problems.
D.The students are all from poor families.
【2】What can we know about the film version of Never Let Me Go?
A.It differed from the novel.

D.It was more successful than the novel itself.
【3】Which of the following best describes Ishiguro as a writer?
A.Humorous.
B.Ambitious.
C.Active.
D.Productive.
【4】What style is the text?
A.A news report.
B.A book review.
C.A children’s story.
D.A diary entry.
24、While youth is often a time of great promise and achievement, a life well lived can also be filled with any number of next chapters and second or even third — acts that add depth, nuance (细微差别), and meaning to our stories. At 65 years old, Somerset native Carole-Ann Warburton experienced a plot twist that led to the fulfillment of a long-cherished dream she’d never even spoken of aloud.
After an illness incapacitated (使失去正常生活能力) her, Warburton was left with the question of what to do going forward. During her convalescence (康复), her daughter brought around some real estate listings for the sort of homes in which she thought her mum might best spend her golden years. Coincidentally, amongst the notices was an offering for a small barbershop with an above-stairs apartment.
For Warburton, although she admitted “the place was awful”, it was love at first sight and the perfect opportunity to do something she’d longed to do for almost as long as she could remember — work in a bookshop. Less than three months after coming to her decision, Warburton handed in her retirement notice, sold her house, bought the store, and using a personal inventory (库存) totaling between 8,000 and 9,000 titles — she launched her new bookshop, The Book Rest.
A decade on, The Book Rest recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. Although the pandemic has slowed foot traffic, since Warburton’s driving motive isn’t monetary profit, but rather, something of a deeper, more special personal value, she has no plans to close up the shop.
Having achieved her own dream, Warburton sees every day in the bookstore as an opportunity to help others realise theirs as well. “All the dreams are in the books,” she told The Guardian. “They are all there waiting to be picked up... Someone can walk in tomorrow and say, I have been looking for that for an awfully long time!” And as gatekeeper to her own small universe of literary wonders, Warburton says she plans to stay around as long as she can to ensure that they do.
【1】What does the author want to say in the first paragraph?
A.There are possibilities at any stage of life.
B.One should grasp the youth to make achievements.
C.Changing the way of life is crucial at the age of 65.
D.Realising a long-cherished dream is all that matters in life.

A.She invested much money in opening a bookstore.
B.She used her possessions to develop real-estate business.
C.She started her career with her daughter in a small barbershop.
D.She sought her daughter’s advice on where to rent the apartment.
【3】What makes Warburton want to keep her bookstore open?
A.Her strong desire to attract more customers.
B.The increasing decline of economic situations.
C.The huge financial burden of illness treatment.
D.Her seeking of an inner world of self-fulfillment.
【4】Which of the following can best describe Warburton?

D.Enthusiastic and determined.
