二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   TORONTO/' TOKYO- The International Olympic Committee has decided to postpone the Tokyo 2020 Summer Games because of the coronavirus pandemic(流行病), IOC member Dick Pound said on Monday, as a window slowly began to open that would allow the showcase to be staged next year.

Major sporting nations Australia and Canada withdrew on Monday as organisers came under global pressure to postpone the event for the first time in its 124-year modern history.

Pound told Reuters that a one-year postponement looked like the best solution. This would mean the Games, scheduled for July 24-Aug. 9, are likely to be held in the summer of 2021.“That's my conclusion ( there will be a postponement) , Pound said in a telephone interview, after Sunday's IOC decision saying it was stepping up its “scenario planning” for the Tokyo 2020 Games- including a possible postponement. “From reading IOC-speak in the communique, if you are going to cancel, you simply cancel because there are no future plans,” added Pound. “But if you are going to carry on with the original objective (to stage the Games), there is no reason to issue a statement because you have already done that over the past several weeks.”

Japan and the IOC have said calling off the Games entirely is not an option. But finding a new date could be complicated as the summer 2021 calendar is already crowded, while 2022 will see the soccer World Cup and the Beijing Winter Olympics.

Pound said a large number of stakeholders(利益相关者) from the organising committee, to athletes to broadcasters and sporting federations would all need to be consulted before a plan could be finalised but there were early signs of a willingness to accommodate a 2021 Summer Games.

World Athletics said on Monday they would be willing to move their 2021 world championships scheduled for Aug. 6-15 in Eugene, Oregon to clear a path for a 2021 Olympics.

“World Athletics has already been in discussion with the Oregon 21 Organising Committee about the possibility that the Olympic Games may move to next year and they in turn have held discussions with their key stakeholders and have reassured us they will work with all of their partners and stakeholders to ensure that Oregon is able to host the World Athletics Championships on alternative dates if it is necessary,” athletics' global governing body said in a statement.

1What can we learn from the news report?

A.Pound thought that a one-year postponement was not so suitable

B.Oregon might change the dates to hold the 2021 world championships.

C.Australia and Canada were discussing whether to withdraw from the 2020 Olympics.

D.It is the second time that the Olympic Games have been put off in its 124-year modern history.

2What does the underlined word “communique" in Para. 3 mean?

A.A thing that blocks one's way or prevents or hinders progress.

B.The level of quality, especially one that people think is acceptable.

C.An official announcement or statement, especially one made to the media.

D.The information that is used in a court of law to try to prove something.

3What does the fourth paragraph mainly talk about? .

A.The success in postponing the 2020 Olympic Games.

B.The purpose of postponing the 2020 Olympic Games.

C.The difficulty in postponing the 2020 Olympic Games.

D.The consequence of postponing the 2020 Olympic Games.

4Which of the following can be the best title for the news report?

A.Tokyo 2020 Games will be put off

B.Future of Tokyo 2020 Games hangs in the balance

C.IOC are to decide on fate of Tokyo 2020 Games

D.Postponement of Tokyo Olympics has to be considered

  • 22、   When you catch the flu and your body temperature rises to fight the virus, that's a form of acute inflammation. So is the redness and swelling that occur when you hurt your ankle. The process is a temporary, helpful response to an injury or illness. It provides the healing chemicals and nutrients your body needs to repair the damage. Once the danger goes away, so does the inflammation.

Chronic low-grade inflammation, on the other hand, is a slow, gradual condition sustained by a misfiring of the immune system that keeps your body in a constant, long-term state of alert, says Dr Robert H. Shmerling, teaching clinician in the department of rheumatology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, USA.

Over time, inflammation damages healthy cells. Here's why: When cells are in distress, they release chemicals that alert the immune system. White blood cells then flood the scene, where they work to eat up bacteria, viruses, damaged cells and pieces from an infection or injury. If the damage is too great, they call in backup cells known as neutrophils, which are the hand grenades of the immune system—they blow up everything in sight, healthy or not. Each neutrophil has a short life, but in chronic inflammation, they continue to be sent in long after the real threat is gone, causing damage to the healthy tissue that remains. The inflammation can start attacking the linings of your arteries or intestines, the cells in your liver and brain or the tissues of your muscles and joints.

This inflammation-caused cellular damage can trigger diseases like diabetes, cancer, dementia, heart disease, arthritis and depression. And because it's low grade, “it’s slow and secret nature makes it hard to diagnose in day-to-day life,” says Roma Pahwa, a researcher for the National Institutes of Health who specializes in the inflammatory response. “You have no idea it is even happening until those conditions show symptoms.”

【1】Which can best describe acute inflammation as a response?

    A.Lasting.

    B.Beneficial.

    C.Harmful.

    D.Dangerous.

【2】What can we learn about neutrophils?

    A.They function as backup cells.

    B.They only damage something bad.

C.They will disappear with a real threat.

    D.They should cause slight damage.

【3】What we infer from the last paragraph?

A.We can't be too careful about cellular damage.

B.Doctors can identify cellular damage with ease.

C.Cellular damage is fast and obvious in nature.

D.There exists no effective cure for cellular damage.

【4】What is the purpose of this text?

A.To introduce some ways to keep healthy.

B.To get inflammation known to people.

C.To warn people of dangers of cellular damage.

D.To recommend a cure for diabetes.

  • 23、An exciting landing process of Chang'e-4 lunar probe (月球探测器 ) was seen through the monitor at Beijing Aerospace Control Center in Beijing, Jan. 3, 2019. It touched down on the far side of the moon at 10:26 a.m. Beijing Time, becoming the first spacecraft soft-landing on the moon's unknown side never visible from Earth.

China's Chang'e-4 probe has started the exploration on the far side of the moon thanks to the relay satellite that provides a communication link with ground control. The relay satellite, named Queqiao, meaning Magpie Bridge, after a Chinese legend (传说 ) , was launched on May 21, 2018, and became the first communication satellite operating in the halo orbit, nearly 500,000 km from the earth. It can also provide communication for probes from other countries. The relay satellite will also be used for scientific and technological experiments. The maximum distance between the satellite and the Chang'e-4 probe on the far side of the moon is 79,000 km. The satellite processes data from the probe and sends it to Earth.

The satellite can stay in its orbit for a long time due to its relatively low fuel consumption, as the earth's and moon's gravity balances its orbital moving. While in orbit, it can "see" both the earth and the far side of the moon.

The concept of using a relay satellite in the halo orbit was first put forward by U.S. space experts in the 1960s, but was realized by Chinese space engineers.

Researchers hope to use the cameras on the satellite to record asteroids (小行星 ) hitting the far side of the moon. To control the cost of the Chang'e-4 probe, the relay satellite was designed to be relatively small, weighing about 400 kg.

Researchers had just 30 months to develop the satellite, putting them under high pressure. To promote public interest in space exploration, the China National Space Administration invited people to write down their wishes for lunar and space exploration, and the relay satellite carries the names of tens of thousands of participants and their messages.

【1】What do we learn from the second paragraph?

A.The relay satellite was launched on Jan. 3, 2019.

B.Chang'e-4 probe was the first communication satellite.

C.The relay satellite only explores the far side of the moon.

D.The relay satellite can handle data from Chang'e-4 probe.

【2】Why was the size of the relay satellite relatively small?

A.To reduce the cost as much as possible.

B.To make it circle Moon for a longer time.

C.To avoid being crashed by other satellites.

D.To follow American space experts' advice.’

【3】What made researchers suffer from great stress?

A.Few people interested in the exploration on the moon.

B.The relay satellite carrying too much equipment.

C.Their lacking enough time to develop the relay satellite.

D.People's never being optimistic about the relay satellite.

【4】What is the main idea of the text?

A.China is a new space power after the USA.

B.Chang'e-4 probe lands on Moon's far side.

C.Chinese space engineers make much progress.

D.Space exploration is a dangerous challenge.

  • 24、   The way Jason Momoa describes Hawaii’s beloved inactive volcano, Mauna Kea, makes you understand why it’s considered sacred(神圣的).

"It’s kind of the umbilical cord(脐带) to earth," the actor tells CNN. "You know, if you think about the Hawaiian islands, that’s the biggest mountain in the world, right? All the way up. So Mauna Kea is the most sacred. We call it the belly button, too. That’s like our birthplace. That’s how our islands were formed. So how can that not be sacred?"

He would know. Jason, a native of Hawaii, has had a near-constant presence there when he’s not working, fighting with local protestors to stop the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope, or TMT, which would drill directly into the mountain and invade its precious water supply. So far, protestors have successfully blocked the only road crews seeking to go up the mountain in order to build the billion-dollar observatory.

"It started in 2015. What’s happening over there was just not right," Jason says. "And I went over there to meet with everyone to bring the point to the world." Jason joins the protests when he can. He cared so deeply about the preservation of the land that when he had spare time to lend his support, he was there. "You also have to remember, that’s our water source. So having an 18-story building built on top of the tallest mountain from the sea level on our water level is terrible."

The Game of Thrones star says he feels the movement is working and describing his part in it as a calling to do what he feels right in his soul. "There’s massive progress that’s bringing our people together," he says, adding, "I think there are a lot of problems in Hawaii. There are a lot of things that have happened in our history, a lot of injustice, and so we’re shining a light on it. People like myself or Dwayne Johnson, Bruno Mars are trying to spread the concern all around the world. For my soul I need to be there."

1Why is Mauna Kea sacred according to Jason?

A.It’s still growing upwards. B.It looks like the belly button.

C.It’s the birthplace of Humans. D.It brings the islands into being.

2What does “It” refer to in Paragraph 4?

A.The project of building TMT. B.The event of blocking the road crews.

C.The shooting of Game of Thrones. D.The movement of preserving the land.

3According to Jason, what’s the significance of their movement?

A.Bringing Hawaiian people together. B.Witnessing the history of Hawaii.

C.Bringing Hawaii problems into focus. D.Making Mauna Kea better-known.

4In which section might the text be read?

    A.Travel. B.Celebrity.

    C.Culture. D.Technology.
