二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、According to CBS Minnesota, the golden retriever (寻回犬) named Marvel was the only one in her litter born without a front right paw (爪子). She’s since been taken in by the Williams family in Waconia, whose 7-year-old son, Paxton Williams, had his right leg cut away three years ago.

Rolling Oaks Goldens breeder Barb Felt found the Williams family through a friend, Paxton’s doctor. “When she was born, we knew right away she had a special purpose,” Felt said. “We wanted her to go in a home with someone who had a limb (肢体) difference.”

Paxton was born before the time was enough, which caused the boy to develop a serious problem in his right leg, which stunted the limb’s growth. Three years ago, Paxton’s parents made the difficult decision to have the boy’s right leg amputated and replaced with an artificial limb. Paxton’s mother, Stephanie, appreciates how their new pet addition helps her son normalize his physical differences.

“It gives him the opportunity to tell the kids, ‘Oh, she’s missing a paw, she’s like me,’” the mom explained. “Just like it gives him that voice to advocate for himself.”

Blaine, Paxton’s father, has also been moved by seeing Paxton and Marvel enjoy walks together on trails near their house. “It’s like they knew they were special,” Blaine said. “The amount of emotions was running through me at the time,” he continued. “It was just awesome because she was in the perfect place at the perfect time.”

Marvel might need a wheelchair or an artificial paw of her own as she grows larger and gets older. The family hopes that Paxton will someday be able to run with his artificial leg and that Marvel will be there to run beside him.

【1】When did Paxton lose one of his limbs?

    A.When he was born.

    B.When he met the pet.

C.When he was four years old.

D.When he was seven years old.

【2】What does the underlined word “stunted” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Making something grow healthily.

    B.Stopping something from growing normally.

    C.Helping something to develop rapidly.

    D.Forcing something to develop partly.

【3】How did Blaine feel about the company of Marvel?

    A.Horrible.

    B.Grateful.

    C.Addictive.

    D.Uncertain.

【4】What is the main idea of the text?

A.A boy found a pet dog in the street.

B.The golden retriever saved her owner.

C.The Williams adopted a golden retriever.

D.A disabled boy adopted a dog without a paw.

  • 22、Many Americans sleep in a room that’s stopped occasionally with some form of artificial light—whether it’s coming from a TV, a jumble of electronics or a streetlight. New research suggests that one night of sleep with just a moderate amount of light may have negative effects on health.

Dr. Phyllis Zee, senior author of the new study and director of the Center for Circadian and Sleep Medicine at Northwestern University, conducted an experiment so far, which indicates being exposed to light at night may be adverse in a variety of ways and could lead people to chronic diseases. For the study, all the participants spent their first night sleeping in a dark room. The next night, half of them slept in a lighted room. Meanwhile, the researchers ran tests on the sleepers: they recorded their brainwaves, measured their heart rates and drew their blood every few hours, among other things.

The results show several clear differences between the two groups. Unlike those who spent both nights in the dark, the group exposed to the light had increased heart rates throughout the night.

The study’s findings that metabolic (代谢的) health suffered aren’t entirely surprising. “This is enough to suggest that if people sleep under light, even a little light, it may pose a threat to their health, particularly cardiovascular (心血管的) health, and increase the risk of disease.” says Dr. Charles Czeisler, chief of the Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and a professor at Harvard Medical School.

In fact, the report did not control for the effects of sleep duration and other potential factors. It’s worth noting that researchers still had a indistinct definition of whether light can affect insulin (胰岛素) changes in the body, but it’s safe to say that even a little light can be bad for your health.

【1】What does the underlined word “adverse” mean in paragraph 2?

    A.Stressful.

    B.Harmful.

    C.Different.

    D.Disordered.

【2】How did Dr. Phyllis Zee get the results?

    A.By comparing test data.

    B.By monitoring light sources.

    C.By analyzing sleeping patterns.

    D.By recording emotional changes.

【3】What is the last paragraph mainly about?

    A.The value of the experiment.

    B.The prospect of the experiment.

    C.The limitation of the experiment.

    D.The application of the experiment.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title?

A.Sleeping with the Lights on: Is it ever OK?

B.Light Theropy Improve Sleeping: Have a try?

C.How does a Lighter Sleeper Get More Rest?

D.Does Bedroom Lighting Improve Sleep Quality?

  • 23、   In the UK, electric and other low-emission(低排放)cars, vans, and buses could be given special green plates to encourage more people to buy such cars, and promote awareness for “clean” cars.

Strange as it may seem, there is some reason to believe that something as small as this could make a big difference. Already, similar ideas have been put into effect in Norway, Canada, Latvia, and China, and the results have been encouraging.

Elisabeth Costa, director of the Behavioural Insights Team, explains, “Simple changes based on behavioral science can have a big impact. Green plates would be more noticeable to road users, and this increased attraction can help normalise the idea of clean vehicles, highlighting(使突出)the changing social norms(规范)around vehicle ownership.”

Actually, hybrids and electric cars accounted for 5.5% of the cars sold in the UK in the first half of the year, compared to 4.2% for the same period in 2017.

However, colored plates can only go so far. At the end of the day, you need strong, concrete measures if you want to support a market like electric cars. The UK already has generous subsidies(补贴)for electric cars, but a study for the RAC Foundation found that the lack of reliable, easy-to-use charging stations is the main roadblock to people purchasing more electric cars. This was repeated by separate research from AA, the UK’s largest motorist association, which found that although 1 in 2 young drivers want electric cars, 8 out of 10 drivers feel that the lack of sufficient electrical chargers is the main reason not to buy an electric car.

Yet this all shows that more and more people are nearing a tipping point where they are willing to buy electric cars. And a small PR stunt(噱头), the “coolness factor” of the colored plates could end up making a difference. Similarly, having red plates for the more polluting cars might also play a role.

A spokesman for the Environmental Transport Association said, “While green number plates will be positive PR for low-emission car makers and early adopters of the technology alike, to be truly effective any such measures will need to at the same time shame the drivers of the most polluting vehicles.”

1Why does the UK give green license plates to cars?

    A.To promote car sales.

B.To beautify the environment in the UK.

C.To separate “clean” cars from polluting cars.

D.To inspire people to buy low-emission vehicles.

2What does the underlined sentence “colored plates can only go so far” mean?

A.The results of giving colored plates are discouraging.

B.The measures of giving colored plates will be at an end.

C.Giving colored plates has a limited impact on promoting “clean” cars.

D.Giving colored plates will be replaced by strong, concrete measures.

3Why do most drivers choose not to buy an electric car?

A.Subsidies for electric cars are not attractive.

B.Charging stations are not readily available.

C.They aren’t fond of the green color.

D.Electric cars are unaffordable to them.

4What did the spokesman for the Environmental Transport Association focus on?

A.Banning people from buying polluting cars.

B.Continuing the use of green number plates.

C.Replacing green plates with red ones.

D.Shaming the drivers of polluting cars into buying “clean” cars.

  • 24、   Home fires can happen quickly, destroying lives and property, but unlike other disasters, most home fires can be prevented. Read on to learn 4 unexpected home fire dangers.

    Having old smoke alarms

An effective smoke alarm can make much difference when it comes to surviving a house fire. It’s not enough to change the batteries twice a year, you also need to replace your alarms every decade. “You should test your smoke alarms every month,” says Lorraine Carli, vice president of the National Fire Protection Association. “But also don’t forget to check the dates and replace an alarm that is more than 10 years old.”

Leaving the kitchen while you cook

One in five Americans admitted leaving food cooking unattended on the stove, found an American Red Cross survey. Walking away from food cooking in the kitchen is a serious fire risk. “The leading cause of home fires is cooking and the leading cause of those fires is unattended cooking,” says Carli.“If you need to use the stove or oven, be sure to keep an eye on it.”

Turning the heat too high when you cook

Turning up the heat too high can be deadly, even if you’re in the kitchen while you cook. Kevin Kelley, senior director of the American Red Cross, recommends paying close attention and turning off the burner if you see smoke or grease (油脂) starting to boil while frying food.

Having a dirty stove while you cook

If your stove is covered with grease, a small kitchen fire can get out of hand quickly. Clean and clear the area around the stove before turning on the heat, or the result will be dangerous.

1How long should you have a new smoke alarm?

    A.2 years. B.10 years. C.12 years. D.8 years.

2What is the leading cause of fires from kitchen?
