二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   More than 1,500 feet below the surface of the ocean, it's darker than a moonless night. But even in this dark world, there's constant activity -including groups of Humboldt squids, each the size of a small adult human, darting around in search of fish.

“You can think of them as little rocket ships. They jet through the water. And they engage in these feeding frenzies. They're always looking out for an opportunity to eat.” Stanford University biologist Ben Burford. He says feeding in a group requires careful navigation.

“These animals are pretty aggressive. So there's probably some risk to group living. Like, imagine driving in heavy traffic with a bunch of aggressive drivers. Thank goodness you have turn signals and brake lights and horns on your cars, because that prevents a lot of catastrophe from happening.”

Burford thinks Humboldt squids communicate in the dark ocean by using their own form of signaling. They do it by turning their bodies into animated message boards. How? They can rapidly change their natural color patterns on their skin by contracting and relaxing their muscles. What's more, their bodies can be bright, or glow.

“They're creating a bioluminescent backlighting for their natural color patterns. So it becomes somewhat like an e-reader, something you can actually read in the dark. They're essentially just, you know, selectively revealing and concealing different parts of a glowing body, producing these patterns on top of a glowing body.”

Burford suspected that the squids could be combining different natural color patterns to create complex signals. “So each of those elements could mean something. And they might have the potential to combine them to generate more meanings.” To find out, his team attached cameras to remotely operated vehicles in order to study the squids' behavior. “We looked at how they arranged their patterns in sequence during prey-capture events.”

Burford eventually hopes to do underwater experiments in which the squids are shown playbacks of their visual signaling-virtual glowing squids, if you will. Their reactions should be illuminating.

【1】Which of the following can best describe Humboldt squids?

    A.Pretty but sensitive.

    B.Mild but courageous.

    C.Aggressive but cooperative.

    D.Imaginative but cautious.

【2】How do Humboldt squids communicate in the dark?

A.By creating color patterns on their glowing body.

B.By touching other squids’ bodies and muscles.

C.By navigating their way carefully in groups.

D.By examining their natural color selectively.

【3】What did the researchers do to study the squids’ behaviour?

    A.They operated the squids remotely.

    B.They collected and analyzed signals.

C.They attached cameras to operable vehicles.

    D.They conducted some underwater experiments.

【4】Where can you most probably read this passage?

    A.In a travel guide book.

    B.In a health magazine.

    C.In a researcher’s lab record.

    D.In a scientific journal.

  • 22、Mars( 火星) appears to be flowing with small streams of salty water, at least in the summer,  scientists reported Monday.  "It suggests that. it would be possible for there to be life today on Mars," NASA's science mission chief, John Grunsfeld, said at a news conference on September 28, 2015.

The streams are about 12 to 15 feet wide and 300 feet or more long, scientists said. "What we're dealing with is wet soil. thin layers of wet soil, not standing water," said Aifred McEwen of the University of Arizona at Tueson ! the principal scientist for the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's high-resolution imaging experiment.

Because liquid water is essential to life, the findings could have major implications for the possibility of Martian life. The researchers said further exploration is needed to determine whether microscopic life exists on the planet.

The presence of liquid water could also make life easier for astronauts visiting or living on Mars. Water could be used for drinking and for creating oxygen and rocket fuel.  NASA's goal is to send humans there in the 2030s.

The evidence of flowing water consists largely of dark, narrow streaks(条痕) on the surface that tend to appear and grow during the warmest Martian months and fade the rest of the year.

Mars is extremely cold even in summer, and the streaks are in places where the temperature is as low as minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit.  But salt can lower the freezing point of water and melt ice.

The source(源头) of the water is a mystery. Scientists noted it could be melting ice. It could be an underground aquifer, which is rock or sand that can hold water. It is possibly water vapor from the thin Martian atmosphere, Or it may be a combination.

Michael Meyer, lead scientist for NASA's Mars exploration program, said the only definitive way for now to determine whether there's life on Mars is to collect rocks and soil for analysis on Earth - something a U. S. lander  set for lift-off in 2020 will do.

【1】What would be the best title for the text?

A Streams of Water Spotted on Mars

    B. Astronauts will  Land on Mars

    C. NASA's Mars Exploration Program

    D. A Breakthrough in the Exploration of Mars

【2】According to John Grunsfeld, there seems to be   on Mars.

    A. salty water

    B. standing water

    C. rocket fuel

    D. human beings

【3】Scientists are uncertain about the    of the water on Mars.

    A. state

    B. source

    C. temperature

    D. taste

【4What matters to the existence of liquid water on Mars?

    A. The distance from the sun.

    B. The favorable climate.

    C. The gravity of the earth

    D.The salt in it.

  • 24、Scientists have found that the connections between humans and their dogs have the Same biochemical basis as the mother-child bond, and it's strengthened by the same thing: a gaze (注视).

A new study in Science, led by Takefumi Kikusui of Azabu University in Japan, carried out a series of experiments that examined the impact of the gaze in the dogs and their owners. “Our data suggest that owner-dog bonding is similar to human parent-child bonding,” Kikusui said. “And this is surprising to us because there is not a mother-baby relationship between humans and dogs, but both of them have acquired similar skills.”

The researchers found that when owners and their dogs gazed into one another’s eyes during a 30-minute period, levels of oxytocin (催产素)increased in both the humans and the dogs. Oxytocin is a chemical associated with trust and maternal (母性的)bonding — it increases when you’re close to someone you love and gives you that warm feeling. Kikusui aid he believed the gaze was learned by dogs as part of their efforts to communicate and form social bonds with humans.

The latest studies have shown that dogs probably evolved from wolves about 15,000 years ago,in Europe. Interestingly, Kikusui didn't find the same oxytocin response in wolves and their owners. “These results suggest that wolves do not use gazes as a form of social communication with humans, which might be expected because wolves tend to use eye contact as a threat,” the researchers wrote.

Duke university’s Evan MacLean and Brian Hare said, “This is particularly true when it comes to how dogs understand the social world. Even as young dogs, they naturally respond to human gestures, such as pointing cues, to find hidden food or toy rewards.”

MacLean said he felt the Japanese study strengthens the idea that the human-dog relationship is like a parent-child relationship and could help explain the biological basis that are involved in the use of dogs in medicine to treat some diseases or various forms of stress.

“If it turns out there are benefits of using oxytocin for some of these disabilities, using assistance dogs will actually be a fairly natural way to cause the system to start working,” he said. “There may be some sort of medicinal value of our communication with dogs that we could use.”

【1】What probably caused different oxytocin responses between dogs and wolves?

    A.Different types of evolution.

    B.Different social bonds with humans.

C.Different understanding of the social world.

D.Different forms of communication wilh humans.

【2】What may MacLean suggest people do?

A.Make use of dogs in medical treatment.

B.Understand how dogs communicate with humans.

C.Use Oxytocin to strengthen parent-child relationship.

D.Train dogs to respond to human gestures in a natural way.

【3】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A.The Powerful Effect of Oxytocin

B.The Differences Between Dogs and Wolves
