二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The poet Lovelle Drachman once said, “blessed are the curious, for they shall have adventures.”, which is certainly true of people with wanderlust.

“Wanderlust” is derived from a German word meaning “a love of hiking” and now used to describe the burning desire to escape the everyday and explore the unfamiliar. Wanderlust is a common, but not universal experience. What makes some people catch that travel bug while others are apparently unaffected?

One theory is to do with our genes. Scientific research has identified a variant of the DRD4 gene that affects sensitivity to dopamine (多巴胺), the neuro-transmitter often released in the brain when we do something we enjoy. Actually, it’s not that the 7R version of the DRD4 specifically creates a thirst for travel, but people with the 7R variant are less sensitive to that delicious dopamine hit.

So simple things that bring other people pleasure, like a jog in the park or a cheeky chocolate treat, might not cut it for them, which makes those with the 7R type of the DRD4 gene more likely to be risk takers to get increased dopamine levels. That’s way DRD4-7R has been called the wanderlust gene. Other researches have also linked the same 7R variant to far riskier behaviours, such as addiction and offensive behaviour. By comparison, the strong sudden desire to go travelling seems like the better end of the Theory of Evolution.

But another theory looks at the psychology of living in our inter-connected human society, one in which we are constantly aware of what friends and social media influencers are doing and keep comparing ourselves to them in two distinct ways. Upwards social comparisons, comparing ourselves to those we see as more successful than us. And downward social comparisons, comparing ourselves to those we see as worse off than us. In the age of social media, it’s very easy to compare ourselves unfavourably with the idealized version. How can we compete with influencers, with their perfectly dark brown legs on neat and clean while sand, and their once in a lifetime sunsets over Machu Picchu?

Whether the motivation to explore the world is genetic, psychological or something else, there are far more harmful hobbies than the desire to explore the world. Venturing outside your comfort zone, to learn about new cultures, meet people you might otherwise never have had the chance to meet, and finally, learn who you are in different situations. Sounds like a life well-lived. As the novelist Jack Kerouac said, “Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent in the office or mowing your lawn. Climb that goddamn mountain.”

1The underlined phrase “catch that travel bug” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to _______.

A.be crazy about travelling B.be curious about travelling

C.escape daily life by travelling D.experience common travelling

2Why are people with the 7R type of the DRD4 gene more likely to have wanderlust?

A.Because they are more fascinated by risks and unfamiliar things.

B.Because the 7R variant cause them to be less sensitive do dopamine hit.

C.Because they have comparatively higher level of dopamine than other people.

D.Because the 7R variant, also called wanderlust gene, helps create a craving for travelling.

3The author will probably agree to the statement that _______.

A.a well-lived life doesn’t involve venturing outside comfortable zone

B.the 7R variant is inevitably linked with some more risky behavior such as addiction

C.people tend to forget their daily routine, but adventures really leave footprints in their hearts

D.when people compare themselves with less successful ones, it may give rise to mixed feelings

4What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.Wanderlust and its two main categories.

B.A less harmful hobby and analysis of its different cause.

C.The distinctions between gene variants and social comparisons.

D.Physical and psychological reasons for the desire to explore the world.

  • 22、We all know the feeling of waking up in the middle of the night with a pounding heart and sweaty palms. Relax, you say to yourself—it was Just a bad dream. Well, it may be that you really should relax, because nightmares might actually be good for you.

According to New York magazine, bad dreams can improve your mental health. A bad dream tends to be based on a real-life concern, for example, an approaching test or a fear of a person. To eliminate these worries the brain turns the dream into a story in the form of a bad dream.

A bad dream enables you to distance yourself from your anxieties, and tum something you're worried about now into a memory. The result is that when you wake up, you're able to move forward and face the future.

A study, featured in The Atlantic magazine, showed something similar. In a survey of more than 700 French students taking a medical school entrance exam, over 60 percent had negative dreams about the test the night before. These included not finishing on time, leaving a question blank, or being late. Those who reported dreams about the exam, even bad ones, did better on it than those who didn't, suggesting that nightmares do in fact prepare us for the failure.

"We think nightmares are so common that they have some purpose to process stressors," Anne Genuain, director of the Sleep Center at the University of Pittsburgh, said.

So, the next time you lie awake at night after a bad dream, remember that it may be the brain's way of putting your fears behind you and readying you for the future. Although a nightmare may make you afraid in the short term, it might be helping you to move on from the bad stuff you might be facing in the real world. Perhaps we should try to accept our nightmares rather than allow them to keep us awake. After all, lack of sleep causes far more problems than dreams do.

  • 23、How Should School Education Be Reformed?

The state of public school facilities in the United States is a matter of great concern to educators and administrators. While the mission of public schools has expanded beyond education to include social support and extra-curricular activities, the academic schedule has changed little in more than a century. A report on time and learning released today by the state education committee says saving school time for academic teaching and moving away from the time-limited tradition of education are crucial steps in the school reform process.

The committee’s report, entitled Time Prisoner, described fixed clocks and calendars in American education as a fundamental design problem that urgently needs to be changed. “Time should serve children instead of children serving time.” the report says. The two-year committee found that holding American students to world-class standards will require more time for classroom instruction. “We have been asking the impossible of our students that they learn as much as their foreign peers while spending half as much as in core academic subjects.” it states.

The committee compared the relationship between time and learning in Japan, Germany and the United States and found that American students received less than half of the basic academic education received by Japanese and German students. On average, American students can earn a high school diploma if they spend only 41 percent of their school time on academics, says the report. American students spend an average of three hours a day on core academics such as English, math, science, and history, the committee found. Their report recommends offering a minimum of 5.5 hours of academics every school day.

The nine-member committee also recommended extending the daily school hours beyond the traditional six hours. “If schools want to continue offering important activities outside the academic core, as well as serving as a center for family and community services, they should keep school doors open longer each day and each year.” says John Hodge Jones, education official of schools in Murfreesboro, Tenn., and chairman of the committee. The typical school year in American public schools is 180 days. Eleven states allow school years of 175 days or less, and only one state requires more than 180 days.

“For over a decade, education reformers have been working excitedly to improve our schools,” says Milton Goldberg, executive director of the committee. “But... if reform is to truly take hold, the six-hour, 180-day school year should go into museums — an exhibit from our education past.”

1Compared with the academic courses more than a hundred years ago, the academic courses now ___________.

    A.include some extra-curricular activities

B.remain much of what they used to be

C.demand students’ more contribution of time

D.focus more on education of social support

2The researches by the committee mentioned in the passage are most concerned about __________.

    A.the fashion of education management

    B.the elements of school education

C.the changes in education in the recent century

D.the time devoted to academic learning

3As it is mentioned in the passage, schools in the U.S.A do the following except __________.

    A.provide important outside-academic activities

B.have competition with schools of other countries

C.arrange six-hour teaching and learning every day

D.serve social units such as family and community

4Executive director of the committee Milton Goldberg would most probably disagree that ___________.

A.the time of school day and school year should be reduced

B.what the education reformers have done is not good enough

C.visiting museums can improve students’ academic learning ability

D.social support and extra-curricular activities should be cancelled

  • 24、A character in one of Shakespeare's plays once said, "Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them." Any of these could apply to the modern day sportsmen. Many still argue about the nature of talent. Some claim that people are born to be sportsmen, while others say it is only through devotion and hard work that they achieve their abilities. Arguably though, it is not until their talents are acknowledged by the public that they truly have greatness fallen upon them.

With this acknowledgement of their "greatness" come all the trappings of modern day celebrity:money, power, influence and responsibility. For better or for worse, like it or hate it, modern sportsmen are the role models of children everywhere. These children will grow up admiring their heroes, devoting their lives to copying their every move, and wanting above all to be like them. Due to this fascination, particularly with the massive influence of the media, it is more important than ever for these sportsmen to acknowledge their responsibility.

In the past few months alone, there have been many examples of questionable behaviors from sports icons. Sport stars of the present day are often mirroring the very worst aspects of society, a fact that the self-righteous(自以为是的) anger of the modern press has been quick to point out. It would be wrong for us to expect sportsmen to be saints. It would also be wrong for us to think that their behavior is markedly different from the sportsmen they grew up watching, but with the all-seeing eye of modern media it is a different world, and different standards must be expected.

Of course there is no obligation for sportsmen to be good role models. There are no prison sentences, no fines, no community service—unless their behaviors are illegal. Unless they break the law, it is entirely up to them as to whether or not they think their behavior is appropriate. Furthermore, measuring the true influence their decisions have on their followers is absolutely impossible. Some will rise against their idols, seeing them in a new light and condemning their actions. Others may copy their heroes' actions, using them as a shield when accused of the same crimes.

It is undeniable that the actions of sportsmen will influence the lives of those who worship them. Modern day sportsmen are almost ideals of today's world, and their actions are watched carefully by millions over the world. Some may complain against it, denying their influence on these children's lives. Others may be aware of it but not respect it, while many may both be aware of it and respect it. In a word, you do not choose whether you are a role model. All you can do is to decide how to act when greatness is thrust upon you.

【1】In Paragraph 1, the author tries to emphasize________.

A.sportsmen become great when their gifts are recognized by people

B.sportsmen achieve greatness through their devotion and efforts

C.different ways for sportsmen to achieve success and greatness

D.the core characteristic to become great sportsmen nowadays

【2】According to Paragraph 4, we can learn that________.

A.role models usually have positive influence on their fans

B.sportsmen have the right to behave freely within the law

C.all the fans will follow their heroes' actions

D.no obligation is given to sportsmen

【3】The underlined phrase thrust upon most probably means________.

    A.palled off

    B.removed from

    C.related to

    D.forced on

【4】What is the main purpose of the passage?

A.To advise the media to choose proper events to report.

B.To inform the public that sportsmen are no role models.

C.To remind the sportsmen of their social responsibilities.

D.To argue that sportsmen should not be expected as herons.
