二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Are you an optimist? Do you look at your glass and see it as half full? Do you believe that every cloud has a silver lining and that things generally turn out for the best? Do you believe that if something is meant to be, it will be? If you reply “yes” to all of these questions, then you are an optimist. You probably are enthusiastic, cheerful and outgoing. You may be successful at work and in love.

But you may be misguided because things don't turn out for the best. You may believe that when one door closes another one opens (for example, you may fail to obtain a new job; another chance will come around soon ). Wrong. When one door closes, another door slams ( 砰然关上 ) in your face. That’s bitter reality.

Now a book has been published which confirms what pessimists (悲观者) have suspected all along. It’s called The Positive Power of Defensive Pessimism. Its author argues that defensive pessimism can lead to positive results. Defensive pessimism is a strategy used to manage fear, anxiety and worry. Defensive pessimists prepare for the things by setting low outcomes for themselves. They carefully consider everything that may go wrong and plan for ways to handle these problems. And this gives them a sense of control. Lawrence Sanno, a psychology professor, says, “What's interesting about defensive pessimists is that they tend to be very successful people, so their low opinion of the situation's outcomes is not realistic. They use it to motivate themselves to perform better.”

So far, so good. This is not rocket science. Defensive pessimists prepare carefully and consider what might go wrong, whether at work, on date or even in a sports game. It makes sense to have a back-up plan. There are many sayings in English urging caution. For example, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.”

And “Don’t count your chickens until they hatch.” To have a confident and optimistic approach to life’s problems is good. But listen to what Woody Alien, the American comedian says ,” Confidence is what you have before you understand the problem.”

There are pros and cons to being an optimist and a pessimist. Don’t feel bad if you see the glass half empty. You are a realist. But lighten up and hook up with someone who sees the same glass half full.

    【1】What’s the passage mainly about?

    A. The benefits of defensive pessimism.

    B. How to become successful in life

    C. The dangers of being too optimistic.

    D. A book that has recently been published.

【2】The underlined sentence “This is not rocket science” ( Para.4 ) means ______.

    A. it’s not a dangerous thing to do

    B. there is no real proof

    C. the cost is not so high

    D. it is quite simple to understand

【3】Which of the following English expressions would a defensive pessimist believe?

    A. Whatever will be, will be.

    B. The glass is half full not half empty.

    C. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

    D. Every cloud has a silver lining.

【4】The writer would probably describe himself as ______.

    A. an optimist B. a realist

    C. a defeatist D. a scientist

  • 22、Last Saturday on the way to the mall, two children, a boy and a girl, came running towards me with bottles on their hands, asking if I wanted bottled water. It was a surprising gesture. I was wondering if they were doing fund-raising. I knelt and asked them where their parents were and how much a bottle of water cost. Then two adult women came up to me explaining what the children were doing. “We are teaching the children to give without anything in return. We are teaching people to accept without giving in return. ”

Two mothers had bought bottled water and placed a sticker(小贴纸) on all bottles with five different quotes引述):

    1. Smile at everyone. You’ll never know when someone may need it.

    2. If Plan A does not work, there are 25 more letters in the alphabets.

    3. Have a thirst for life. Every day is filled with possibilities.

    4. In your thirst for knowledge, be sure you don’t drown in all the information.

    5. Dig your well before you’re thirsty.

The bottle I have has quoted No.5. A sudden change of attitude opened up between me, the mothers and the children. We are no longer strangers to each other. We were having such a great time chatting and I ended up helping them give away the rest of the bottled water.

One young lady was so thankful that she happily accepted the water and said it was the best thing that happened to her all day since she had a bad day at work. A man refused and walked away saying “No, thanks”. A couple kept on bowing to us in gratitude. When it was all done, the children and I were giving each other high-five. It was so much fun. I think I had more fun doing this than the mothers and the children.

【1How did the author feel when he was offered bottled water?

    A. Embarrassed.  B. Surprised.  C. Excited.  D. Disappointed.

【2Different quotes were placed on the bottles to ________.

    A. inspire others to think positively

    B. show how rich and colorful our life is

    C. encourage people to get more bottled water

    D. explain why at times abandonment is necessary facing trouble

【3】What did the author do after chatting with them?

    A. Bought the rest of the bottled water.

    B. Gave away some money for charity.

    C. Decided to meet with them regularly.

    D. Joined them in being kind to strangers.

【4】What do we know from the last paragraph?

    A. Children had more fun doing this than adults.

    B. This random (随机的) act of kindness is warmly welcomed.

    C. People responded quite differently to this activity.

    D. The author learned a lot from this random act of kindness.

“Success begins with belief and ends with doubt.”—Larina Kase

I remember reading through a book and the author was writing about being a reverse paranoid. In that particular section he mentions how he has a belief that the world he’s living in is out to give him everything he absolutely wants and desires.

There are times when I think to myself,“Wow,the world is out to get me and make me miserable.” Then I thought, why can’t I believe that the world is out to make me a better conversationalist. Then I started adapting to the belief of the reverse paranoia.

When I started talking to people,I truly believed that I was the most interesting person in the room. I believed that everything I said added value to the conversation. I believed that people stayed behind and chatted with me because they found me charismatic.

As a matter of fact, for about five months I wrote down on my bathroom mirror the following affirmation:“People love me and respect me. It is a privilege to talk to me. People find me interesting and charming and always want to get to know me better!”

I would say the affirmation after I brushed my teeth. And I would continue to say it until I felt completely great about myself. There were days that I just wouldn’t feel like saying it,because it would feel like a lie to me. But that’s the trouble, like the quote says, success ends when there’s doubt. And that’s why I continued until I had no doubt in my mind.

Then strange things happened,I noticed that people did find me more interesting, and that I gained more confidence in talking with people. I was more assertive(坚定自信的) at work. I was able to control politics and gossip at work to minimal levels, and became a much better manager, and developed better customer relations to the point that sales were up by 20% compared to the year before,on my best month sales were up by 39%,and this was a year that a recession was happening.

【1】The main purpose of the author is to________.

A.explain how to be a reverse paranoid

B.share his personal experience in success

C.tell us the importance of positive thinking

D.advise us how to improve our communication skills

【2】Before the author started adapting to the belief of the reverse paranoia,he used to ________.

A.believe the world would give him anything he desired

B.have a negative attitude towards life

C.have a strong belief in the world

    D.live a miserable life

【3】Sometimes the author didn’t feel like saying his affirmation because________.

A.it didn’t work as he had expected

B.he had become enthusiastic about conversations

C.he had felt great about himself

D.it didn’t sound true to himself

【4】We can infer from the last paragraph that the author________.

A.didn’t believe what had happened at work

B.didn’t get along with others at work

C.had his performance at work affected by the recession

D.made great progress due to his affirmation

  • 24、   When a big exam is coming up, you probably feel anxious about any wasted time and want to begin school as soon as you probably can.

But tens of thousands of British high school students will soon be getting up later. They’re taking part in a new experiment by Oxford University to see if later classes can improve their exam results.

Grades 10 students in the UK have to take the nationwide General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) exams. They have to pass these exams in order to study more advanced courses, and later apply for universities.

The Oxford University project means that GCSE students from more than 100 schools across England will start school at 10 am, more than one hour later than the current start time (8:50 am).

The project is based on scientific evidence that teenagers are “out of sync(同步)” with traditional school hours, the Telegraph reported. And what they need is more sleep in the morning.

“We know that something funny happens when you’re a teenager, in that you seem to be out of sync with the world,” said professor Colin Epsie, who is leading the study. “Your parents think it’s because you are lazy and opinionated(固执己见的)and everything will be OK if you could get to sleep earlier. But science is telling us that teenagers need to sleep more in the mornings.”

Everyone follows a natural cycle of sleep and wakefulness. Biology has decided that teenagers go to sleep around midnight and don’t feel fully awake until 9-10 am, according to scientists. That’s two hours later than adults. And their body clocks stay like this until the age of around 21 for males, and 19 for females.

“Society provides school for learning, but the brain provides sleep. So we are exploring the possibility that if you delay the schools start time until 10 am, that will improve learning performance,” said Epsie.

The results could be positive, based on previous studies.

An early study at the UK’s Monkseaton High School in 2009 found that starting an hour later improved grades in core subjects by 19 percent.

The Oxford project is expecting to publish the results in 2018. It’s time to wait and see whether scientists will give us an excuse to get up late.

1According to the article, students who take part in the Oxford University project_______.

A.will start school one hour earlier

B.will be guaranteed more sleeping time in the morning

C.will perform better academically than those who don’t participate

D.will no longer have to take GCSE exams

2We can infer from the article that ________ .

A.children and adults have different natural cycles of sleep and wakefulness

B.getting up late is a sign of laziness in the eyes of most British parents

C.the Oxford University project is targeted at all British high schools

D.there is still no scientific evidence that supports a late school start time

3What is the author’s attitude toward the Oxford University project ?

    A.Critical B.Uninterested

    C.Optimistic D.Doubtful

4What’s the best title of the article ?

A.It’s never too late to learn B.An excuse to get up late

C.The later you get up, the better you’ll learn D.Wake up late to excel
