  • 21、Why should I teach my children history? That sounds like a stupid question to even ask. But, as I hear different home schooling teachers discuss history, I get the idea that there may be different reasons for teaching history. Let me briefly explain the three good reasons for studying history and two bad reasons for studying history.

The major reason I see for studying history is that we can learn from the past. I am convinced that the world would be a much better place if more people understood the successes and failures of the past and the things that made these successes and failures. However, as the unfortunately true statement goes "the one thing we seem to learn from history is that we don't seem to learn from history." Perhaps at least in teaching history, to my children I can do a small part in changing this.

The second major reason for studying history is that it is hard to understand the current political climate in the absence of an understanding of its historical context. We can not even understand why we are and where we are without history, much less (更不必说) try to figure out where we are going or how we should get where we want to be.

I teach my children history, for one more reason. I purchased a set of historical audio (录音机) tapes for our children. My seven-year-old son listened to them over and over. It was my hope that he would become inspired by the accomplishments of people like the Wright brothers to accomplish things by himself. I think that it is good that we celebrate the accomplishments of people like Martin Luther King Jr. if, in doing so, young people are called on to stand for the principles that he stood for and accomplish what he accomplished. I also think that by studying people like Adolph Hitler, people can learn to stand against the things that he stood for.

1In Paragraph 3, the author shows that history is useful because _______________.

    A. it makes the current political situation go smoothly

    B. it helps us realize the importance of historical events

    C. it helps us understand why things are the way they are

    D. it helps people accept the present situation where they live

【2】Some historical figures(人物) are mentioned in the last paragraph to show ______________.

    A. people can be inspired to do good, while also learning to fight against evil

    B. people may also learn from bad historical figures

    C. more celebrations should be held to honor their achievements

    D. today’s people can also achieve what they achieved

3What would be talked about in the following paragraph?

    A. How to teach history effectively.

    B. Some negative reasons for studying history.

    C. How to get more people to study history.

    D. Some bad historical figures.

4The main purpose of this passage is to ____________.

    A. inspire the parents to teach their children history

    B. show the importance of history in politics

    C. explain the reasons why children study history

    D. introduce the writer' s own way of teaching history

  • 22、Many gardeners believe that “talking” to their plants helps them grow---it turns out that they may not be crazy after all. According to the scientists from the University of Exeter, plants may keep communicating with each other through a secret “unseen” language.

For their experiment, the scientists picked a cabbage plant that is known to send out a gas when its surface is cut. In order to get video evidence of the communication, they changed the cabbage gene by adding the protein---luciderase(虫荧光素酶), which is what makes fireflies(萤火虫) glow in the dark.

When the changed cabbage plant was in full bloom, they cut a leaf off with a pair of scissors, and almost immediately, thanks to the luciderase, they could see the plant sending out “methyl jasmonate(茉莉酸甲酯)”.

While this was a known fact, what was surprising was the fact that the minute this gas began to give out, the nearby cabbage plants seemed to sense some kind of danger and started to send out a gas that they normally have to keep predators(捕食者) like caterpillars(毛虫) away.

What the scientists are not sure is whether the plants are trying to warn the other leaves or the near plants about the danger---something that will require further research However, the team, which is led by Professor Nick Smirnoff, is quite excited about the findings because this is the first time it has been proved that plants do not live a passive life, but actually move, sense and even communicate with each other.

However, before you get all concerned, they are quite sure that plants do not feel the pain when they are cut, since they do not have nerves---so go ahead and bite into that juicy carrot!

【1】What’s the best title of the passage?

    A.  Plants Can Send Some Gas

    B.  Plants Can Communicate with Each Other

    C.  The “Unseen” Language of Plants

    D.  Plants Can’t Feel Pain

2What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 1 mean?

    A.  Gardeners   B.  Plants

    C.  Scientists D.  Fireflies

3When the plant sent out methyl jasmonate, which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?

    A.  The nearby cabbage plants seemed to sense some kind of danger.

    B.  The nearby cabbage plants started to send out a gas.

    C.  The nearby cabbage plants tried to warn the near plants.

    D.  The nearby cabbage plants communicated through a secret language.

4According to the experiment, plants ________________.

    A.  don’t live a passive life

    B.  can feel pain when they are cut

    C.  can warn the other leaves about danger

    D.  can talk with each other

  • 23、The Red Cross is known for doing some of the most heroic acts in the world. There are Red Cross societies in 190 countries all over the world. Their task is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of sudden serious situations by organizing the power of volunteers and asking people to donate.

In 1860, Swiss businessman and social activist, Jean Henri Dunant, saw the effects of wars, and countries not prepared or able to deal with the suffering of those who had been injured in the Battle of Solferino during the Second War of Italian Independence. Dunant organized a group of volunteers to help bring water and food to the injured, to help with medical treatment, or to write letters to the families of those who were dying. After that moment, he knew that more had to be done, and he wrote the book, A Memory of Solferino, which encouraged the public to create an organization which would help the wounded. His writing encouraged more people to support him in creating the International Federation of the Red Cross. And in 1863, the International Committee of the Red Cross was founded.

The modern-day Red Cross does more than nursing soldiers during wartime. The group began to spend most of its time on disaster relief and epidemic(流行病) treatment. It has achieved even greater service in humanitarian(人道主义的) programs that serve continuously in both peace and war.

One of the easiest ways you can help the Red Cross is to make sure you are able to donate blood and make an appointment at the Red Cross website. But, donating blood isn’t the only way you can help out — the Red Cross also encourages you to donate your time if you can, along with other things the modern-day Red Cross wants you to know.

【1】What does the underlined word “alleviate” in paragraph 1 mean?

A.To make more people know the Red Cross.

B.To ask more people to help the wounded.

C.To let people see the effects of wars.

D.To call on people to stop wars.

【3】What is the purpose of the last paragraph?

A.To introduce the Red Cross website.

B.To explain the Red Cross’s future work.

C.To encourage people to offer help in the Red Cross.

D.To show how the Red Cross helps needy people.

  • 24、In “minority report”, a policeman played by Tom Cruise, gathers information from three psychics(通灵者)and arrests future criminals before they break the law. In the real world, prediction is more difficult. But it may no longer be science fiction, thanks to the growing predictive power of computers. That prospect scares some, but it could be a force for good-if it is done right.

Machine leaming, a branch of artificial intelligence, can lead to remarkably accurate predictions. It works by chewing vast quantities of data in search of patterns. Take, for example, restaurant hygiene(卫生).The system learns which combinations of sometimes vague factors are most suggestive of a problem. Once trained, it can assess the risk that a restaurant is dirty. The Boston mayor’s office is testing just such an approach, using data from online reviews. This has led to a 25% rise in the number of spot inspections that uncover offences.

Governments are taking notice, A London district is developing an algorithm(运算法则)to predict who might become homeless. In India Microsoft is helping schools predict which students are at risk of dropping out. Machine-learning predictions can mean government services arrive earlier and are better targeted. Researchers behind an algorithm designed to help judges make bail(保释)decisions claim it can predict likelihood of committing crimes again so effectively that the same number of people could be bailed as are at present by judges, but with 20% less crime. To get a similar reduction in crime across America, they say, would require an extra 20,000 police officers at a cost of $2.6 billion.

But computer-based predictions are sometimes debatable. ProPublica, an investigative-journalism outfit, claims that a risk assessment in Bmoward County, Florida, wrongly labelled black people as future criminals nearly twice as often as it wrongly labelled whites. Citizens complain that decisions which affect them are taken on incomprehensible grounds.

These problems are real, but they should not spell the end for machine learning as a policy tool. Instead, the priority should be to establish some ground rules and to win public confidence. The first step is to focus machine learning on applications where people stand to gain extra help at school, say, rather than extra time in jail.

【1】The example of restaurants is used in paragraph 2 in order to_________.

A.illustrate how accurate the predictions are

B.urge that the government should take action

C.stress that vague factors can make a difference

D.show how machine learning changes people’s lifestyle

【2】What can be inferred about the bail decisions based on the algorithm?

A.More money would be spent to uncover offences.

B.More policemen would be required to reduce crime.

C.Less crime has been reported since the algorithm was applied.

D.Fewer people that are likely to commit crimes would be bailed.

【3】What conclusion does the writer draw from the risk assessment in Broward County?

A.In which area machine learning is applied matters.

B.Machine learning as a policy tool is coming to a dead end.

C.Public confidence in computer-based predictions is increasing.

D.The government should not rely on computer-based predictions.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?

    A.Clever computers

    B.The power of learning

C.The government that depends on AI

D.Decisions that contribute to better algorithm
