21、 An important drug that serves as the backbone of treatment for most childhood cancers, has become increasingly rare, and doctors are warning that they may soon be forced to consider rationing doses(定量供应剂量).
There have been long-term shortages of certain drugs and medical supplies in the United States for years, but doctors say the loss of this medication, vincristine(长春新碱) is leading to lots of problems, as there is no appropriate substitute. “This is truly a sad situation,” said Dr. Yoram Unguru, a doctor at the Herman and Walter Samuelson Children’s Hospital at Sinai in Baltimore. “Vincristine is our water. It’s our bread and butter. I can't think of a treatment for childhood cancer that doesn't use vincristine.” Shortages of the drug will likely affect children throughout the country, he said, forcing doctors to make difficult decisions. “There is no substitution for vincristine that can be recommended.” Dr. Unguru said. “You either have to skip a dose or give a lower dose or beg or borrow.”
Vincristine is one of the drugs used to manage leukemia, the most common childhood cancer. The Children’s Oncology Group, a group of researchers at hospitals and cancer centers, has made recommendations for changing clinical trial treatment rules involving vincristine, including checking the hospital’s supply before trial enrollment, and considering using half the dose if the full amount is not available.
“We are all disappointed,” said Dr. Michael Link, a doctor at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Without vincristine, many children with acute lymphoblasicleukemia will still be cured, “but this is a difficult disease to treat in general, and with one hand tied behind your back, it makes it much more difficult.” Dr. Link said.
Until earlier this year, there were two suppliers of vincristine: Pfizer and Teva. In July, Teva made a “business decision to discontinue the drug,” according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).Since then, Pfizer has been the only supplier, and the company lately has been experiencing troubles with production. “Pfizer has experienced a delay, and we are working closely with them and exploring all ways to make sure this important cancer drug is available for the patients who need it,” the FDA said. Jessica Smith from Pfizer said the company would sped up additional shipments of the drug over the next few weeks in an effort to make up for Teva’s withdrawal from the market.
【1】Which of the following statements of vincristine is TRUE according to the passage?
A.It is quite rare and expensive. B.It is an irreplaceable drug.
C.It is widely used in adult cancers. D.It used to be as common as bread and butter.
【2】We can learn from Dr.Link’s words that _______.
A.vincristine will cause back pain
B.the treatment without vincristine is almost impossible
C.the treatment without vincristine can still be carried out
D.lack of vincristine will promote drug research
【3】What measures will the FDA take to solve the problem?
A.Exploring new ways to ship cancer drugs.
B.Making an effort to produce vincristine.
C.Cooperating with Pfizer to get more vincristine produced.
D.Persuading Pfizer and Teva to deal with the problem together.
22、Have you ever found yourself in this situation: You hear a song you used to sing when you were a child—a bit of nostalgia (怀旧) or “blast from the past, ”as we say. But it is not a distant childhood memory. The words come back to you as clearly as when you sang them all those years ago.
Researchers at the University of Edinburgh studied the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They found that remembering words in a song was the best way to remember even one of the most difficult languages.
Here is what they did. Researchers took 60 adults and randomly divided them into three groups of 20. Then they gave the groups three different types of “listen-and-repeat” learning conditions. Researchers had one group simply speak the words. They had the second group speak the words to a rhythm, or beat. And they asked the third group to sing the words.
All three groups studied words from the Hungarian language for 15minutes. Then they took part in a series of language tests to see what they remembered.
Why Hungarian, you ask? Researchers said they chose Hungarian because not many people know the language. It does not share any roots with Germanic or Romance languages, such as Italian or Spanish. After the tests were over, the singers came out on top. The people who learned these new Hungarian words by singing them showed a higher overall performance. They did the best in four out of five of the tests. They also performed two times better than those who simply learned the words by speaking them.
Dr. Katie Overy says singing could lead to new ways to learn a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things when they are contained in a catchy or memorable tune.
Dr. Ludke said the findings could help those who struggle to learn foreign languages. On the website of University of Edinburgh Dr. Ludke writes, “This study provides the first experimental evidence that a listen-and-repeat singing method can support foreign language learning, and opens the door for future research in this area.”
【1】The “song” mentioned in the first paragraph is intended to ________.

【3】In which situation can the finding of the research be applied?
A.An American is going to learn some Chinese.
B.A child is going to have his first music lesson.
C.A student is going to learn a new English song.
D.A mother is going to teach her baby how to speak.
23、Our solar system might be crazier than we once thought. Scientists say that deep within Uranus(天王星) and Neptune(海王星) it rains diamonds.
On Earth. diamonds form under extreme heat and pressure. The inside of Uranus and Neptune also has high temperatures and pressures. What's more, the blue planets are largely made up of icy water and gases such as methane(甲烷).
So scientists have long believed that deep inside the two planets, the heat and pressure the methane into hydrogen (氢)and carbon (碳) Then diamond rain would form, falling toward the center of the planets.
But no one could prove that this would really work-until now. In a study published recently in the journal Nature Astronomy, scientists say they were able to create this kind of "diamond rain" in a lab, reported The Guardian.
Scientists used high-powered lasers to create pairs of shockwaves through a kind of plastic. The plastic is made from hydrogen and carbon, much like methane. The shock waves created high pressure and heat, like that inside Uranus and Neptune.
"The experimental time is very short, Dominik Kraus, lead author of the study, told The Guardian. "That we saw this very clear signature of diamonds was actually very, very surprising”.
The diamonds created in the lab were tiny, only a few nanometers (纳米)wide. Scientists believe that diamonds would be much larger within Neptune and Uranus. Then they might slowly sink toward the planets center because of gravity.
【1】What factor is needed to form diamonds?
A.Extreme heat and pressure
B.Hydrogen and carbon
C.lcy water and gases
D.High-powered lasers
【2】What does the underlined word mean in the last paragraph?
A.Unsuccessful
B.Small
C.Real
D.Natural
【3】How did scientists prove the theory of forming diamond?
A.By giving examples
B.By stating argument
C.By explaining statistical data
D.By doing experiments
【4】What can be referred from the text?
A.There are many high-powered lasers in Neptune and Uranus
B.Deep inside Neptune and Uranus could be full of diamonds
C.The shockwaves inside Neptune and Uranus crate high pressure and heat.
D.Scientists long believe that there are diamonds inside Neptune and Uranus
24、Not that long ago, the world wondered whether clean energy could survive without government support. Now the question is how far it can spread. The number of electric vehicles, which was about 1 million in 2015, last year reached 2 million. In electricity generation, too, trend is with the greens. In the first half of this year, wind, solar and hydro generated a record 35% of Germany's power.
Greater success is breeding greater ambition. California is proposing to reach 60% renewable energy by 2030. 176 countries have clean-energy goals. Hawaii, America’s most oil-dependent state, has promised to be 100% renewable by the middle of the century and so have 48 poor countries vulnerable to climate change. This week the number of multinationals making a commitment to running their operations on 100% renewable energy rose to 100.
But not every target is helpful. To see why, consider that goal of 100% renewable energy. It makes solving climate change seem easy. In fact, though wind and solar can generate the whole country’s electricity some day, renewables still account for less than 8% of the world’s total power output. Moreover, cleaning up electricity is only part of the battle. Even though gas-fired heating and cooking can be at least as big a source of greenhouse-gas emissions, renewable heating gets little attention. Transport policy is unpredictable, too. Car manufacturers may hit their goal of annual sales of 10 million electric vehicles in a decade, but battery-powered road transport, shipping and aviation (航室) are dreams. A much-quoted claim that America could rely on wind, solar and hydro alone for its electricity has recently been bitterly criticized by a group of respected academics.
Most importantly, a 100% renewables target confuses means with ends. The priority for the planet is to stop net emissions (净排放量) of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide. Putting too much emphasis on wind, solar and other renewables may block off better carbon-reduction paths. New technologies, such as “direct air capture” systems designed to separate carbon dioxide from the air, may in time prove vital. Likewise, greater energy efficiency could reduce emissions by even more than using renewables would.
【1】Why is Germany mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.To introduce the topic.
B.To provide a successful example of producing clean energy.
C.To compare with the USA.
D.To prove the possibility of the 100% renewables target.
【2】What picture is described at the beginning of the passage?
A.A tough fight against climate change.
B.A huge market of electric vehicles.
C.A promising future of clean energy.
D.A fierce competition between countries.
【3】Why is every target not realistic according to Paragraph 3?
A.Car makers cannot produce enough batteries.
B.New energy doesn’t receive its due attention in every aspect of society.
C.Use of traditional energies causes air pollution.
D.We are lacking in enough wind and solar energy to generate electricity.
【4】Which of the following does the writer probably agree with?
A.Energy efficiency is superior to using renewables.
B.People can only use new energy in reality.
C.Mixing up means with purposes matters most.
D.The target of 100 renewables is too high to reach.
