二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A small boy sat on the street with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: I am blind, please help”. There were only a few coins in the hat.

A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words. Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were.

The boy recognized his footsteps and asked :Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?” The man said: “I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way.”

What he had written was: “Today is a beautiful day but I cannot see it.”

Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing? Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign simply told people to help by putting some money in the hat. The second sign told people that they were able to enjoy the day, but the boy could not enjoy it because he was blind.

The first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people they were so lucky that they were not blind.

There are at least two lessons we can learn from this simple story.

The first is: Be thankful for what you have. Someone else has less. Help where you can.

The second is:Be creative. Think differently. There is always a better way!

【1】 What was the boy doing on the street?

    A. He was selling his old hat.

    B. He was busy counting coins.

    C. He was begging for money.

    D. He was showing his handwriting.

【2】 How did the man help the blind boy?

    A. He took the boy's sign away.

    B. He only gave the boy some money.

    C. He changed the words on the sign.

    D. He asked others to help the blind boy.

【3】 The blind boy recognized the kind man by his ______ .

    A. words B. smell   C. voice D. Footsteps

  • 23、My students frequently ask me how I planned out my career to become president of Fidelity Investments. I always tell them, “There was no grand plan; I backed into my career one step at a time.” In this tough economy and ever-changing world, it is more important than ever to smartly evaluate each step in your career. To prepare for whatever surprises lie ahead, try to make choices today that will maximize your options in the future. 【1】

Gaining transferable (可转移的) knowledge begins with the choices you make at school. You want your education to provide you with the necessary skills and expertise to succeed in a wide variety of jobs. 【2】 I favor those that involve extensive writing, rigorous analysis, or quantitative skills.

Once you have finished your formal education, search for jobs that will allow you to further expand your transferable knowledge—to help you find your next job. Let’s say you take a job putting together airplane leases. Within a few years, you could become the world’s expert on the subject. 【3】 By contrast, if you take a job that will expand your computer programming skills, you can greatly boost your options for later steps in your career.

Remember gaining transferable knowledge is only one piece of the puzzle. 【4】 As a saying goes, “Organizations don’t hire people. People hire people.” The more people you know, the more people will think of you when a job pops open—even when it is not publicly advertised.

Of course, you can build your network to some degree without changing jobs. 【5】 But this sort of event-driven networking pales in comparison with the deep bonds you can develop with your colleagues by working, communicating, and traveling with them.

A.You can make yourself more attractive.

B.Gain transferable expertise and form close bonds with your colleagues.

C.Your next step should help you expand your web of personal relationships.

D.This later helped me evaluate and start business units throughout the world.

E.You can attend conferences or participate in committees at trade associations.

F.This means that you need to make smart choices about the courses you will follow.

G.However, this narrow expertise probably won’t help you in any other line of work.

  • 24、   Among the more colorful characters of Leadville’s golden age was H.A.W. Tabor. His history is fast becoming one of the legends of the Old West. Perhaps he was lured by rumors of fortunes to be made in Colorado mines. A few years later he moved west to the small Colorado mining camp known as California Gulch. “Great deposits of lead() are sure to be found here.” he said.

Tabor opened a store, which sold everything from boots to salt, flour, and tobacco. It was his custom to “grubstake” miners, in other words, to supply them with food and supplies while they looked for ore (矿石), in return for which he would get a share in the mine if one was discovered.

One day in 1878, two miners came in and asked for “grub”. Tabor had decided to quit supplying it because he had lost too much money that way. These were continued, however, and Tabor was too busy to argue with them. “Oh help yourself. One more time won’t make any difference,” He said and went on selling shoes and hats to other customers. The two miners took $17 worth of supplies, in return for which they gave Tabor a one-third interest in their findings. They picked wasteland on the mountain side and began to dig. After nine days they struck silver. Tabor bought the shares of the other two men, and so the mine belonged to him alone. This mine, known as the “Pittsburgh Mine,” made 1,300,000 for Tabor in return for his $17 investment.

Later Tabor bought the Matchless Mine for $117,000. This turned out to be even more incredible than the Pittsburgh, yielding $35,000 worth of silver per day at one time. Leadville grew. Tabor became its first mayor, and later became vice-governor of the state.

    1Tabor went to Colorado ________.

A.to seek fortune B.to sell supplies

C.to open a mine company D.to look for ore

2What is Tabor’s custom in his shop?

    A.Sharing wasteland with miners.

B.Helping the miners to look for ore.

C.Supplying everything to miners for free.

D.Exchanging items for minerals interests with miners.

3Why didn’t Tabor give up the “grub” with the two miners?

A.Because he was specialized in business.

B.Because they insisted on making a deal with him.

C.Because the other customers prevented him then.

D.Because he had earned too much money before.

4What is the intention of the passage?

    A.To introduce Tabor’s successful experience.

B.To encourage people to start a business.

    C.To discuss Tabor’s life planning.

D.To tell of the gold rush.
