二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Most people aren’t good at creative problem solving for two reasons: (1) They are not trained in how to be creative. (2) They don’t understand group strength well enough to harness(驾驭)their power to maximize group creativity.

A key element of creativity is applying existing knowledge to a new problem. The more people getting involved in solving it, the more knowledge there is to work on it. Unfortunately, research shows that the traditional brainstorming methods fail to achieve that goal. When groups get together to exchange ideas, they actually come up with fewer ideas overall than if they each had worked alone.

To fix this problem, you should consider the two stages of group problem-solving: divergence(分散)and convergence(集中). Divergence happens when the group considers as many different potential solutions as possible. Convergence happens when the various proposed solutions are evaluated and reduced to a smaller set of candidate solutions to the current problem.

The essential principle of group creativity is that individuals working alone diverge, whereas group members working together converge. In groups, once a member states a potential solution, that makes others think about the problem similarly. That is why groups working together diverge less than individuals working alone.

Therefore, be aware of when to diverge and when to converge. For example, early in the problem-solving process, have group members work alone to write down statements describing the problem. Then get them back to discuss their descriptions. The group discussion will lead everyone to accept one or a small number of these statements to work on—this is healthy convergence.

When starting to generate solutions, you again want divergence. Have people work alone to start. Then collect people’s initial ideas and send them around to others and allow the divergence to continue as everyone individually builds on the ideas of other members.

Finally, let the group discuss the resulting ideas. This discussion will gradually lead the group to converge on a small number of candidate solutions.

This simple method works effectively, because it respects what individuals and groups do best.

1Research shows that the traditional brainstorming methods ______.

    A.actually limit group creativity

    B.greatly encourage group creativity

C.enable people to form more ideas together

D.prevent people’s involvement in the problems

2According to Para. 4, when a member presents an idea, others tend to_____.

    A.think the other way round

    B.follow his way of thinking

C.be more confident in their own ideas

D.be less willing to share their own ideas

3What should group members first do early in the problem-solving process?

A.Discuss the problem. B.Simplify the problem.

C.Put down group statements together. D.Write down their individual descriptions.

4How can each group member make changes to his initial solution?

A.By adding in collected evidence. B.By reorganizing his own words.

C.By drawing on others’ ideas. D.By making his statement briefer.

5What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?

A.To advocate a way to make group thinking more effective.

B.To demonstrate the difficulty in organizing group thinking.

C.To highlight the differences between divergence and convergence.

D.To show the advantage of group thinking over individual thinking.

  • 22、Zebra crossings-the alternating dark and light stripes on the road surface-are meant to remind drivers that pedestrians may be trying to get across. Unfortunately, they are not very effective. A 1998 study done by the Department of Traffic Planning and Engineering at Sweden’s Lund University revealed that three out of four drivers maintained the same speed or even speeded up as they were approaching a crossing. Even worse, only 5% stopped even when they saw someone trying to get across.

Now a mother-daughter team in Ahmedabad, India has come up with a clever way to get drivers to pay more attention-a 3-D zebra crossing with an optical illusion (视错觉).

Artists Saumya Pandya Thakkar and Shakuntala Pandya were asked to paint the crosswalks by IL&FS, an Indian company that manages the highways in Ahmedabad. The corporation was looking for a creative solution to help the city’s residents to cross the busy accident-prone  (易出事故的) roads safely. Thakkar and Pandya, who had previously seen images of 3-D zebra crossings that gave drivers the illusion of logs(原木)of wood on the streets in Taizhou, China, decided to test if a similar way would work in India.

Sure enough, in the six months that the 3-D crosswalks have been painted across four of the city’s most dangerous highways, there have been no accidents reported! The artists say that while it may appear that the zebra crossing could cause the drivers to brake suddenly and endanger the vehicles behind, such is not the case. Because of the way the human eye works, the illusion is only visible from a distance. As they get closer, the painting looks just like any other ordinary zebra crossing. The creators hope that their smart design will become increasingly common throughout India and perhaps even the world. So let’s look forward to it.

【1】What can we learn from the first paragraph?

    A. Most drivers will slow down at zebra crossings.

    B. Common zebra crossings don't function well.

    C. Drivers have to stop when approaching zebra crossings.

    D. About 95% of the drivers choose to speed up when approaching zebra crossings.

【2】Why do drivers seeing the 3-D zebra crossings slow down?

    A. Because the drivers consider the safety of pedestrians.

    B. Because the drivers don’t want to brake suddenly and endanger the vehicles behind.

    C. Because the drivers are afraid of being fined for breaking the traffic rules.

    D. Because the drivers mistake them for logs of wood on the streets.

【3】 The last paragraph is mainly about ____________

    A. the theory of the 3-D zebra crossings.

    B. the popularity of the 3-D zebra crossings.

    C. the shortcoming of the 3-D zebra crossings.

    D. the positive effect of the 3-D zebra crossings.

【4】 What is the author's attitude towards the 3-D zebra crossings?

     A. Approving B. Doubtful C. Cautious D. Objective

  • 23、A new device is helping those who are blind to see. Jason Esterhuizen lost his eyesight after a car accident. He never thought he would be able to see light or movement again. But now with the movement of a switch, his world suddenly grew brighter.

He says, “I still can’t put it into words. I mean from being able to see absolutely nothing, it’s completely black, to all of a sudden seeing a little light move around.“ It is not full or normal sight, but Esterhuizen can move about in the world around him.

Dr Nader Pouratian says, “ Being able to tell where a doorway is, being able to tell where the sidewalk begins or ends or where the crosswalk is, are all extremely meaningful events that can help these people regain some form of independence.”

The new technology-called Orion-uses several parts. One is a small device placed in the brain. The other parts are a video camera on sunglasses and a processing device that can be carried in a person’s clothes. When the user points the camera, a signal goes to the processor (处理器)and then back to the glasses. The glasses then communicate wirelessly with the device in the brain. The information causes a pattern to develop in the part of the brain. The pattern helps users detect (识别 ) movement and shapes of light. And it all happens in seconds.

Pouratian says this technology is a first. “We basically have the video camera and the video processing unit performing the functions of what the eye normally does, ” he adds.

Esterhuizen says that now he can do everyday activities around his home that he once could not. “Crossing the road is much easier and much safer for me because I can look down and just follow the white line that’s painted on the road.”

The researchers believe that one day this technology could help people who have lost their vision because of illnesses like glaucoma(青光眼)or diabetes. It may also help those with poor vision or who were born blind.

【1】How does the new device help the blind to become independent?

    A.To tell them their surroundings.

    B.To show them its instructions.

C.To use sound to communicate with them.

    D.To give them full sight.

【2】What do we know about Orion?

    A.It needs sunglasses with network.

B.It totally depends on the camera.

C.It can function almost in real time.

D.It sends a pattern of light in hours.

【3】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.The technology will cure all diseases.

B.The technology still has some space to improve.

C.Those with poor vision will recover immediately.

D.Those with poor vision will go blind once more.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

A.A New Device Improves Your Eyesight

B.Technology Is Changing the Modern Life

C.Blind Men Are Given the Chance to See

  • 24、Mom and I were putting the finishing touches on dinner, and my little niece Jessica came in to set the table. Instead of going to the dish cabinet, she went into the pantry where there was a stack of old, mismatched dinner plates on the bottom shelf.

When she had set all six places, she stood back and sighed, "Oh, Grandma, your plates are so beautiful. Ours are all alike!" We had a good laugh at her innocent remark, but as I think back to all those years ago, I believe she was right. Those plates were beautiful.

Mom worked for the local council on aging as a housekeeper. She did many of the little things that allowed elderly people to stay in their own homes. Most of her clients got Meals on Wheels, a service in the 1970s. They received a hot lunch and a cold snack to have later in the evening. This is really not very much food. Every evening Mom would make to-go meals on these mismatched plates covered with aluminum foil, and then deliver them to the people who she knew didn't get enough to eat.

This was about ten years before microwave ovens became common so it was important that the food be on a plate that could be reheated in a regular oven. Instead of a cold sandwich and macaroni salad, Mom's clients dined on Beef Manhattans, pan-fried chicken or meatloaf, along with veggies and a piece of pie or cake. Mom and Dad did this even after Mom left her job, and Mom continued after Dad's death until all her former clients had either passed away or moved out.

When I was cleaning our Mom's house after her death, I kept one as a souvenir. That plate is a sweet reminder of the lessons of generosity and caring for one's neighbor that were modeled for me by my parents.

【1】Why did the author think those plates beautiful?

    A.They were not all alike.

    B.They were little Jessica's pride.

C.They were collected from different places.

D.They were symbols of the parents' kindness.

【2】What did the author's mother do to earn a living in the 1970s?

    A.Be a housewife.

    B.Run Meals on Wheels.

    C.Deliver food to houses.

    D.Do housework for the old.

【3】Why did the author's mother make to-go meals?

    A.It was her job.

    B.She was good at cooking.

C.She wanted to help beyond her duty.

D.Her family didn't have enough to eat.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.Mother’s plates of Sympathy

    B.My Precious Souvenir

    C.Services for the Senior

    D.A Kind-hearted Mother

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

If you are like many students, your time is limited so it is important to get the most educational value out of the time you have. Speed of learning is not the only important factor, however. Becoming an effective and efficient student is not something that happens overnight, but putting a few of these tips into daily practice can help you get more out of your study time.

One useful way to become a more effective learner is to simply keep learning. In one article published in Nature, it was reported that people who learned how to juggle(玩杂耍)increased the amount of gray matter, which is associated with visual memory. When these individuals stopped practicing their new skill, this gray matter disappeared. So, if you are learning a new language, it is important to keep practicing the language in order to maintain the improvement you have achieved. If you want the new information you just learned to stay put, keep practicing and rehearsing(默诵)it.

Another one of the best ways to learn is to focus on learning in more than one way. Find different ways to rehearse the information. This might involve describing what you learned to a friend, taking notes, or drawing a mind map By learning in more than one way, you're further strengthening the knowledge in your mind. According to researcher Judy Willis, "The more regions of the brain that store data about a subject, the more interconnection there is. And this interconnection of data means we have learned, rather than just memorized."

While it may seem that spending more time studying is one of the best ways of effective learning, research has proved that taking tests actually helps you better remember what you've learned, even if it isn't covered by the tests. The study showed that students who studied and were then tested had better long-term recall of the materials, even of information that was not covered by the tests. Students who had extra time to study but were not tested had significantly lower recall of the materials.
