二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The world’s first urban airport specifically for flying cars and drones(无人机) will be developed under government-backed plans to cut road congestion(拥堵)and pollution. The zero-emission airport, to be called Air One, will be built in Coventry later this year to allow small electric passenger-carrying aircraft to operate in an urban area. It will initially open in November in a month-long demonstration a part of events to mark Coventry’s year as UK City of Culture.

Urban- Air Port, the London-based aerospace company which is behind the facility, said it planned to eventually build more than 200 airports in cities around the world, with rooftops and floating platforms being used to locate them as close to urban centres as possible. Flying cars-effectively large. passenger - carrying drones- are not currently permitted to operate in UK airspace. However, the European Aviation Safety Agency has started a consultation on the issue and hopes that permission will be given in a few years to allow" electric vertical lake -off and landing vehicles"to operate commercially.

The technology is seen as quieter, lighter, cheaper and more environmentally friendly than helicopters, allowing people to take short journeys between city centres rather than relying on the increasingly congested road network.

Ricky Sandhu, founder and executive chairman of Urban - Air Port, said the new facility would give flying cars a place to land, take-off and charge their batteries. "It will bring clean urban air transport of zero emission to the masses, " he added . " Most of our cities are crowded urban centres where space is limited and you may not find sufficient space on the ground so rooftops can be important. " The ultimate aim was to build the airports on rooftops and on offshore platforms.

    A.To celebrate Coventry’s year.

B.To encourage people to buy flying cars.

A.They are intended for distant journeys.

B.They are mainly produced by Urban-Air Port.

C.They are allowed to operate commercially now.

D.They are great options for future travellers.

【3】What is Mr. Sandhu 's attitude towards Air One?

    A.Optimistic.

    B.Objective.

    C.Worried.

    D.Unconcerned.

【4】From which is the text probably taken?

    A.A research paper.

  • 23、No two snowflakes (雪花) are the same. Who first discovered the fact? Wilson Bentley, a farmer from Vermont, in 1885 became the first person to successfully photograph a snowflake. After years of attempts and errors, Bentley caught the details of snowflakes using a microscope (显微镜) connected to his camera. He photographed more than 5,000 snowflakes during his lifetime, never finding any two of them exactly the same.

He had the mind of a scientist and the soul of a poet. He wrote many articles for magazines like National Geographic. He kept weather records of every photograph. The theories that he developed about how snowflakes formed were proven true.

Bentley never had formal education. His mother had been a schoolteacher before her marriage, so she taught Wilson at home. He seemed to be smarter than most kids of his age. When he was 15, his mother gave him an old microscope from her teaching days. The first time he looked at a snowflake under it, he was attracted.

It wasn’t easy, however, to get those snowflakes on camera. It took almost three years for Bentley to work out how to successfully photograph one—which he did a month to his 20th birthday. The first difficult thing was figuring out how to connect the microscope to the camera. And then there was the greatest challenge of getting each snowflake photographed before it melted (融化). He worked in an unheated room.

Bentley would go outside and try to catch falling snowflakes. He would wear heavy gloves so the heat from his hands wouldn’t transfer over. He would hold his breath as he used a small stick to move the snow under the cold microscope. He would press the snowflakes down to the glass with a turkey feather (羽毛). The light would come from only a little window.

Bentley died in 1931 at the age of 66, but his creative images helped pave the way for generations of scientific photographers. His images can also be found on prints, jewelry and Christmas decorations. A children’s book about him won the Caldecott Medal in 1909.

【1】How did Bentley study the snowflakes?

    A.By printing snowflakes on paper.

    B.By drawing snowflakes in pencil.

    C.By taking pictures of snowflakes.

D.By observing snowflakes in the lab

【2】Which of the following can best describe Bentley?

    A.Calm and never losing heart.

    B.Clever and proud.

    C.Talented and determined.

    D.Brave and warm-hearted.

【3】What was the most difficult for Bentley’s study?

    A.Getting a good quality microscope.

B.Finding enough snow in its early form.

C.Fitting the microscope onto the camera.

    D.Photographing snow before they disappeared.

【4】What is the last paragraph mainly about?

    A.Bentley’s scientific spirit.

    B.The use of Bentley’s images.

    C.Bentley’s inspiration to children.

    D.Bentley’s influence on the world.

  • 24、   Violent winter weather sweeping across large parts of the central and southern US has brought record-breaking cold temperatures, leaving the electricity cut off and at least 21 deaths.

The worst power outages were in Texas, where more than 4 million homes and businesses remained without power on Tuesday in subfreezing temperatures. Elsewhere more than 250,000 people also lost power across parts of Appalachia, and 4 million people lost power in Mexico.

The blackouts forced Harris county to scramble(争夺)to get more than 8,000 doses of Moderna's coronavirus vaccine into people's arms, after the county public health facility lost power and its back-up generator also failed. The conditions also delayed vaccine shipments. State officials said Texas, due to receive more than 400,000 doses this week, did not expect deliveries until at least Wednesday.

Associating climate change, normally connected with burning heat, with an unusual winter storm that has destroyed a wide part of Texas, most people find it seem so abnormal. But scientists say there is evidence that the rapid heating of the Arctic can help push cold air from the north pole much further south, possibly to the US-Mexico border.

This phenomenon has shown itself to a dramatic degree over the past month, with a splitting of the polar vortex(涡旋)helping cause huge flurries of snow in Europe as well as record cold temperatures in parts of the US used to milder winters.

There is no agreement among scientists over the interaction between Arctic heat and cold weather further south, which is called as a topic of “an active area of research”. Global heating is causing warmer winters, and record cold temperatures are now being clearly outpaced by record hot temperatures, but the complex interaction of climatic conditions still requires further investigation, to the great surprise of some among others, including some famous scientists.

【1】What record has been broken recently in the US?

    A.The power outage.

    B.The cold weather.

    C.Coronavirus vaccine.

    D.Deaths in the blackouts.

【2】Why did vaccines become of vital importance in Harris county?

A.Vaccine shipments were disturbed by its state government.

B.More back-up generators should be set up to provide power.

C.Harris county had an argument with the Texas government.

D.The local health facility failed to work properly without power.

【3】What do the public think about the weather phenomenon in the central and southern US?

    A.Unreasonable.

    B.Undoubted.

    C.Discouraging.

    D.Predictable.

【4】What interaction of climates is focused on by scientists?

    A.Milder winters and violent summers.

    B.Arctic cold and Antarctic heat.

C.Global heating and violent cold weather.

D.Cold and heat in active areas
